In this video we present a Battle Report of a Napoleonic rule set called:
Valour and Fortitude,
written by Jervis Johnson, Alan & Michael Perry.
FREELY available as a download from the Perry Miniatures website:
www.perry-miniatures.com/valo...
This was our first trial of the rules, so apologies if we got things wrong.
Please feel free to offer any corrections in comments below.
Or if you are unsure of anything we did in the game, we will do our best to answer your questions, again in comments below.
The game in quick summary is a 'IGOUGO' turn based system.
There is a Fate card mechanism with each side drawing a card at the start of their turn. These cards can be played as described on the card.
Firing occurs first in the turn
Then actions which include movement and charging.
Next combats are resolved.
And finally a Morale phase occurs, with units and brigades testing to see if they break as appropriate.
Finally the game is concluded by prior agreement after a set time or set number of turns played. At which point the victor is determined by adding up victory points , which are typically scored by capturing objectives on the battlefield or breaking enemy brigades.
In the report we managed 3 turns per side in about 2.5hrs, which included us figuring things out as we went along.
In this time the game featured unit and cannon fire , infantry and cavalry charges and units and brigades breaking.
So a fair amount of action!
Models by Roly Hermans... these were mostly from the Front Rank range, with a few other ranges mixed in.

Roly also gives an insightful review of the rules, far better than I can offer through this video, it's well worth a read so head on over to Rolys blog for the nitty gritty!!!

Great to see an AAR on these rules which have generated a lot of buzz (especially as they are free). One comment is that players may want to adjust unit sizes to smaller battalions (say 3-4 stands). This means you need fewer figures and you have more room to move. Of course you may also wish to change movement distances which are super generous (though I get the intent is to have units close asap). Thanks for posting this - great looking game.

Thanks mate. Yes the rules are flexible in that respect, and can be used at smaller scales too with smaller minis and changes to movement distance and firing ranges accordingly.

@@kapitihobbies9360 Congrats again on your nice looking table. Of course I think the rules themselves cover Options allowing for different unit sizes and move/range changes. I doubt my club will leave General d'Armee but this is a handy option for Conventions and for newby player introductions.

love to see more of this especially with the 2nd ed rules. I know your doing more Ancients atm but some Napies with the 2nd ed rules would be great to see.

Good stuff guys, we have just played our second and found that brigades can break very easy if small, plus skirmishers need to be protected, and cavalry is treated per squadron, so support each cavalry attack as squadrons

Overall, a great battle report! Thank you guys for posting this, I enjoyed it immensely. I think you guys have assaults wrong. At 17:13 you state the cavalry must be within 3” to assault, this is incorrect. Infantry must be within 3” to assault cavalry or 6” to assault horse artillery. Other units can make 1 full move to contact their target or within 3” to support an assault. You also made a mistake in the cavalry fight near the church. British cavalry are Headstrong (+1d6). In the resolution of the infantry fight, if a unit passes their valor test(s), excess hits over a unit’s shaken number are removed. At the 1:04:00 mark when the British cavalry defeat the French attack column, the French should be automatically routed & again with the British heavies. Overall, I think guys got everything else exactly right, so good job!

Yes, needing to be within 3" to make an Assault would have been a strange stipulation.

I've been looking over Napoleonic rules for several years trying to find one with a good balance between simplicity and historically based mechanics. Valor and Fortitude seems to fit the bill quite nicely. It's also simple enough to make it attractive to new players willing to "give it a go". Napoleonics becomes a large commitment in time and money whatever scale you choose if you want to build a proper army in the Grand Manner.

Yes, I have held off building my own "Nap" for those very reasons. We plan to contrast this game with the same forces use Black Powder V2 at some point too.

When allocating hits during a melee, you apply hits only to units lending Direct Support (in contact) otherwise all go on the Fighting units.

I had some games with this ruleset recently and I really like it for its speed. Maybe a little bit shockied at first, about how quick the troops voporized, but all in all it is better to have a game with 6 brigades ended in a couple of hours rather than deploy all of them and after the same time maybe had taken a single morale test or so... I like your video and I hope that you will film other batrep of this game. I'm testing the FaQ rule for toned down morale for Brigades and reduced the distances for deployment (12" rather than 18") and in general movement distances by 3" for every kind of units, wile artillery move only 2" if unlimbered. I found this more balanced in a 6x4 feet table. Your hopinions about this? I have a question too: How do you deploy infantry detachment 95th rfle above all, or Voltiguers, and Downgraded units such as Combined Grenadiers or Combined Voltiguers? I use for the firsts single models on 20mm bases in skirmish order. and a unit of 3 bases 40x40mm for the downgraded unit... How do you coed with this?

Hi Thanks for your comment. This was our first go at the rules and we haven't had a chance to have another go since. The majority of the troops were based in a 'general fashion' initially for other rule sets like General de Brigade / Piquet / Black Powder etc, so were not based specifically for this rule set.

@@ericcalmels33 Im not sure, possibly a mistake on our behalf. I recall the firing selection was a little odd, rather than chose your unit and select an enemy target to fire at... you actually chose the target unit first, then see who can hit it... one of your units is then the main firer, and your other friendly units add supporting fire dice. I think we figured this out part way through the game so thats why it might seem odd???
