After installing the gasket to the cover I lay it on the floor and put weights on the top of the VC while it dries.

I was told not to use rtv on cork gasket. Is the cork gasket better than the rubber ones?

using the rtv you had to wait an entire day why not use some spray glue and put it on in 5 minutes

Use weather strip adhesive.

I have been install engines in cars for years you don’t needs clip and or wait. They make weather stripping in black and or yellow they are be same just different colors.get at any auto part stores. after cleaning gasket surface on valve cover you use the weather stripping. After installing weather stripping but the Gasket on the cover to help dry quickly pull gasket up a little and put it back on line up all the hole Give a couple minutes and now it will stay in place and not move. I do this on all my gaskets.make sure you put it on the parts not the engine. Now for any reason if the part has to be replaced the gasket will come off with the part. Making it easy to clean the surface on engine. If you want to use silicone on the other side that will go on the engine. Just make sure the gasket is dried and can’t move it from the weather stripping side. If using silicone on engine side you only need a very little bit. Works good all the time never had any gaskets leak or slip on not line up good. Just use weather stripping on part put gasket on lift up a little but back on ready to go.

Weather strip adhesive can save you time. I'm a fan of using gaskets or RTV, but not together, one or the other. The exception is where engine parts attach, and there's a small gap, such as where a timing cover meets a cylinder head, in that situation just a dab of RTV can seal that gap, that the gasket missed. When you coat a gasket with RTV you prevent the gasket from bonding with the metal surface, and create a uneven surface. I think there are better products available if you want what you think is a better seal with imperfections in surfaces, better bonding et cetera. I don't know what they are, some type of "Gasket Sealent", but I don't think RTV is the answer. I think with the improvements in glues, paints, silicone, polymers, sealants in the last five years, gaskets also have benefitted. Just a matter of matching the product to the application, doing good preparation, and waiting the appropriate time before putting back in service. A $20 tube of great stuff is useless if you don't allow it to cure.

I was reading the comments im changing the valve cover gasket for a gm 250 online six because it only leaks on wavy side. I heard silicone will hold it tighter and dry quicker any info will be helpful thanks 👍

I've been a mechanic (in the UK) for over 40 years and I've never heard of 'grey RTV'. I do however know that a layer of grease will do the same job without the clothes pegs and without having to wait overnight.

Permatex makes it: black Right Stuff is really durable and difficult to remove, gray Right Stuff is a little easier to remove for those parts you might want to take off again. Excellent product!

Hmm never used rtv always Vaseline or a little grease like soaking a trani gasket in fluid..looks like it would work, cool!

Ever use Vaseline because it has petroleum and will dissolve the gasket. I know, I tried it on a rubber once. He’s 17 now.

i never use rvt ...... shellac only on cork! also a better way is use little strips of thread and tie them to the valve cover and then you can install in 10 mins.

Why not just after putting the rtv and the gasket on just put the valve cover on the ground on a piece of cardboard and let gravity set it?

What’s the big deal with everyone against rtv I’ve never applied big gobs and let it dry I use a light amount tighten it down call it done, a little goes a long way most people use way too much

wrong you use shellac! only use silicone if you tear the engine down after a run.

It doesn't matter which color it is. The color is an additive (just pigment) and has nothing to do with chemical reaction (curing of RTV). Physical and chemical properties are still the same.

Not true. See my comment above. I restore trucks and tractors, and have plenty of experience with sealants/gasket makers.
