Alot of layers of good knowledge presented here. Old school, but still needed in this day and age. Flyin’ Miata makes their own tool for Miata engines- was worth every penny.

That scissor gear anti-lash setup is also found on the modern Triumph 865 CC motorcycle engine (modern air-cooled bikes). Wonder who thought of it first, the car guys or the bike guys! I like your C-clamp setup. Any tips for how to do seals on a small motorcycle engine with rockers & pushrods without pulling head or even the rocker arms?

Spring compressor is very clever. Have a 320k BMW e30 which doesn't smoke on start up but does so 3/4 minutes later. Plugs are slightly oily but don't know if its valve seals or piston rings. A mechanic told me that sometimes rooting at an old engine can make it actually worse.

MsCelicagt4 It's at least the valve seals because of oil smoke after running a few minutes. very common on German cars. A bunch of Lucas oil stabilizer will help. Do up the valve seals though I'd say. On high milage vehicles the valve guides can wear and cause the valve seals to wear out sooner. But I'd say it's still worth it.

Ask your students what to do if they dont have shop air to compress into the cylinder. There is a way that works if you are out in a field somewhere.

I have a 2002 Altima 2.5 and its consuming oil like crazy. I replaced the valve cover and gasket with a new OE Nissan cover. The spark plug well had oil accumulating before the cover change. all nice and dry now. Have you ever heard of changing the valve guide seals with the head on? The car is NOT smoking and I think the oil is coming from an exhaust valve guide which is slamming the oil into the exhaust...unburned and has fried the catalytic converter. I do not want to replace the converter until I have the oil leak (valve guide seals) fixed. Do you know if the QR25 motor valve guide seals would/could be done this way? I saw some posts where they put soft rope inside the spark plug hole, manually rotate the cylinder to top, snug it against the rope and valves to keep the valves from falling into the cylinder.

The rope method works - but usually the oil will go in on the intake side because of the pressure differential.
@coachwilson5967

Thanks! I realized after watching your video, in fact the vacuum caused by the intake valve would be the likely culprit of the oil consumption.

Now that I have the cover off (again) I realized taking the overhead cams may be beyond my DIY ability. The Cam sprocket cover on the passenger side scares me. The aluminum housing needs to come off right? To get to the sprocket bolts that attach the sprocket to the cams? I see there is a timing sensor over there too.

Typically come with a head gasket set but you can buy them I imagine from some of the aftermarket suppliers.

Good little tool there. Oh me, I didn't know valve stem seals were so hard to do! My 2006 Camry needs them I reckon. Small amount of blue smoke comes out at cold start, but at 265,000 miles, reckon that'd happen. I'm thinking it's not worth doing it, I sure can't! And not worth paying much to have it done. Oh me, reckon I need to get shed of the thing.

@Andrew Lim no, blue is oil. Any water, even with coolant in it, will show up as steam. It will, in case you have a blown head gasket, have a distinct anti freeze burning smell. It is like the smell of death, you never want to smell again...

As a kid before my rookie year I could not find a mechanic that can figure out what the problem was with a 79 Lincoln with a 400Ci M refused to idle properly. I took the engine apart and found the cam gear had a thick plastic type noise insulator around it that had exploded. It caused a major amount of slack that was causing the engine to surge at low rpm above 1300 rpm It would run good. After about 7 wrong diagnosis and a old man ASE master did not screw the top of the carburetor after a rebuild causing a fire in the driveway I decided that no one was ever going to touch my ride ever again. After that I started working on the family cars knowing that I would never do anything so careless as that. It took a few years of going to a local mechanic that I would take parts to press something or get an A/C charge after repair that he invited me into my rookie year. It was a very busy small shop where about three times every week I would learn something no book can tell you. Your students are very lucky to have the extra tricks and tips handed to them that experience provides.
