Mythology Unleashed

Practically every culture in history tells stories of beings who dine on the blood of humans. Though they go by many names and take many shapes, they are known best today as vampires. A staple of horror fiction and scary movies, most people associate vampires as charismatic and attractive beings who resemble humans with fangs. Stories such as Dracula have perpetuated romantic ideals of the vampire, but as you'll learn, the vampires of mythology are starkly different than their modern day depictions!

You do realize that until Christopher Lee, vampires didn't have fangs?! Homer, you don't even acknowledge the fact that until Hollywood, vampires didn't for the most part even TOUCH blood. They consumed LIFE FORCE, not blood. Vampires simply did NOT drink blood, period. Your research is horrid, wildly ignorant. Thumbs down. Sigh. You even got sunlight wrong. All it did until Hollywood was weaken a vampire, it didn't hurt them in any way. And you got that silly bit about holy relics/crosses wrong. That didn't happen until Hollywood, since it was very dramatic. Dammit, you even got stakes wrong. They weren't symbolic, you actually had to use specific woods depending on the region you found the vampire, and you had to ram the stake through the heart and into the ground itself. Again, silver didn't happen until Hollywood vs Vampires. Hell, silver didn't happen against werewolves until 1941's The Wolf Man (Beast of Gevaudan was an isolated incident). The novel Dracula didn't show love etc. He was a monster. READ THE BOOK YOU IDIOT! Half vampires have existed for centuries, they are great vampire hunters by nature, and have a few powers to back it up, again wrong!

When I think of a vampire, I always picture it as the classic Bram Stoker vampire. My favorite vampire movie is Bram Stoker's Dracula. Oldman did a great job portraying Dracula.
@CorbCorbin
@CorbCorbin Жыл бұрын
He did great portraying Coppola’s Dracula. None of that love story, between Dracula and Mina, is in the Stoker story. It’s Jonathan and Mina, along with Quincy’s pure love, for Lucy, that are the romances in it. Coppola took liberties, and made a story that works in its own way, and tries to show the tragedy of Dracula, and by the end, Mina.

My thoughts as well! There's so many other vampire variations that lots of people don't know of or haven't been spoken of often enough, and many of them are very unique beyond the usual European vampire that people know of (like the Penanggalan from Malaysian culture or the Jiangshi vampire from Chinese culture). It'd be interesting to hear more about them! ^^

Personally, I will always love the Interview With The Vampire/Queen of the Damned Vampire. Eternally conflicted between their humanity and desire for blood. I think being a vampire should be lonely and full of suffering. I always surprisingly liked the BBC Dracula. I liked the take on him being the only one of his kind, and other vampires being something different. Plus, the ending had a great "look at Human ugliness" theme that I just love.

Vampires might be THE most popular but, I still believe (in my personal opinion) werewolves and lycans to be THE best. Not knocking vampires out of the top seat by far, I love a good vampire as much as I do the furballs. Dracula and Van Helsing are favorites of mine, along with Balde and Underworld's Selene. Also I'd not known that using a stake for a vampire also symbolically pinned them to the earth. Always learning something new with your videos. Would love to learn more about vampires from other myth's and the like. Please continue sharing videos with us as often as you can, and thank you for your hard work!

I've always enjoyed Gary Oldman's performance in "Bram Stoker's Dracula", but ever since I watched the two Vampire Hunter D movies (Bloodlust in particular) and started reading the books, I fell in love with them! I was never too big into horror as a whole, and largely indifferent to vampire lore, but I really love the series' blend of fantasy horror and scifi. It's not perfect and probably not to everyone's taste, but I think it's an enjoyable franchise that's kind of flown under the radar among Western audiences.

Gary Oldman's performance is out of charts amazing. But the story as a whole felt like a betrayal to the original story even though it had lines from the original book. I don't know maybe it's just I read the 1895 book first and expected a movie named "Braham Stoker's Dracula" to be true to the original😂it was a good romanticized version tho. But I prefer the original.

Here’s the story. Before she became the Derag Due she was a beautiful and kind hearted girl. She had porcelain skin, blonde hair like a sunflower and eyes as a green as a four leaf clover. She was also a princess. She fell in love with a mere stable boy. Her father of course did not allow the marriage. So he wed her off to a man older then him for a ton of money. He kept her locked in a tower and would go in. Using his dagger to cut her and see the blood drip on porcelain skin. She hoped that the stable boy would save her. But he never found out where she was. Eventually her hair turned white and her eyes turned grey. After a while she killed herself. She was buried by the village and the stable boy having found out about what happened to her asked for her to come back. In Irish tradition you must put a rock over the grave of a suicide victim otherwise they will turn into a vampire. But out of guilt no one could do so. Three nights later she rose from her grave. There she encountered her father and sucked the breath out of him. Eventually she encountered her husband having just married another woman. This time she drank him and his new wife’s blood. And from that day forward she was the Derag Due.

Although at first it might appear as just another YA craze adaptation, The Vampire Diaries show (2009-16) is maybe my favourite interpretation of the expanded lore of these creatures, as it keeps much of the classic characteristics yet puts in a logical modern image that for example isn’t in any way connected to demons or religion. It’s a good series because of the story and characters too but the portrayal of the supernatural beings is actually really well handled

My Romanian grandmother once said of Bela Lugosi's Count Dracula, "That IS Dracul'ya." In the village where my grandmother grew up, vampires could not emerge from their graves during the day. Everyone was advised to remain indoors from sunset to sunrise. A howling of a dog or wolf would cause people to utter a prayer to St. Michael. Any night-wandering animal would be viewed with suspicion. A newly covered grave would also be covered with poppy seeds, sprinkled with water blessed by a priest and have crosses/crucifixes made of iron placed over them. Bram Stoker didn't make up every aspect surrounding vampiric lore.

Alucard from the Castlevania series. Son of Dracula, born of a human woman. Detests his dark nature and his father. Uses his powers to combat other creatures of the night. A very cool character. The runner-up would have to be Rudy Giuliani.

Dracula is my base for vampire lore. Ann Rice was my next interest, to see if she developed on the Dracula legend. She alluded to it but didn't really connect like I hoped she would. In any case, her tales were fascinating in detail. Other than that, I read one tale from a fantasy collection from Forgotten Realms that was interesting in that whole created world.

Towards the end of this video, i suddenly remembered the 2009 movie Daybreakers. The plot revolves around vampires sedating humans, & collecting their blood endlessly

Not all vampires are adverse to holy objects, it all depends on the nature of the vampire. Undead vampires like the Strygoi and Jiangshi or demonic vampires like the Manananggal are affected by holy objects. But other vampires whose nature derives from mother nature are not affected even if they take a bath on a tub of holy water

Johnathan Frid was the first to play the reluctant vampire in the TV series Dark Shadows from the late 1960's. People these days that Anne Rice came up with the idea, but that's not true. Frid played Barnabas Collins like a drug addict fighting an addiction, and in the late 60's that really gripped the audience.

A greater examination of vampiric beings from the mythology of different cultures would be fascinating - the blood drinking 'life thief' archetype is so widespread and also so influential across so many cultures that its significance from a socio-cultural anthropological standpoint is marked.

One brief aspect is, I like the look of the flesh in unnatural light at night. It has a translucent glow that I haven't seen replicated in media. Yet indoors with unnatural light looks almost normal. In the sun is a different story altogether.
