Join curator Assistant Curator Catriona Gourlay inside the National Art Library as she handles and prepares the artist's book 'Anansi Company' for photography. The book consists of 13 delicate handmade wire and card rod-puppets which are based on the tales of Anansi, which spread from West Africa into Caribbean folklore as stories shared orally by enslaved people.
Sound designer and performance-maker Julie Rose Bower has documented Catriona's delicate examination process using ambisonic sound, letting us get closer to the object than ever before.
Watch as Catriona gently slides the puppets out of their paper slots, and shows us how they can be manoeuvred, wearing gloves to avoid getting fingerprints on the metal.
Steps:
What is an artist's book?: 00:52
How the book is structured - loose leaves: 01:20
Photographing books: 02:05
Marking openings with acid free paper: 02:34
Writing on the paper slip: 03:33
Using the museum catalogue: 03:59
Handling and manoeuvring the Tiger puppet: 04:36
Should you use gloves to handle books? 05:01
Putting on nitrile gloves: 05:35
Removing the Chicken-Hawk puppet from the paper slot: 06:07
Manoeuvring the puppet: 07:11

This video should be an hour long! Beautiful sounds and slow hand movements. It's one of the best in the series, thank you!

I very much agree! None of them are particularly long. I want to let V & A know that we “ASMR nerds” LOVE long videos! Especially if they happen to become one of our favorites. That way we don’t have to keep starting them over!
@justkelly2

@@scicchiello I also wish it was longer! But a small tip for you: if you press the gear symbol in the top right of the video, you can turn on “loop video” so you don’t have to manually start it over! It feels like they added that feature just for ASMR vids 😅

i really admire that these super interesting books are being preserved so perfectly even though they're much newer than a lot of the other books i can see in the background, for example, and that the conservator is being so careful with both the puppets and the book. on the other hand i couldn't stop imagining how fun it would be to be a kid reading this book and getting to play with the puppets........ if i had this job all i'd be doing was making the little hawk fly around the room

“This version of Anansi's stories has been created by artist Ronald King, and was published by Circle Press in 1992. It features poetry by Roy Fisher, based on material from Jamaican Song and Story, 1907.” . Wonderful video! I was hoping to hear more about the artists who created such a beautiful book and it would be lovely to see this information from your website in the video description at least. Love this channel 💛
