Van Build Series: Episode 4 - It's not always easy!

This is the fourth episode in our NEW van build series! In this episode we are putting the wiring into our Renault master LWB van and it causes us problems (please do leave us a comment if you have ideas to help us!). John cuts carboard templates and builds kitchen doors the easy way, and Tara starts to consider the soft furnishing which might be going into the van. Crusoe of course, ever present!
We hope that this episode inspires anyone out there thinking of building their own van to just give it a go. We have learnt everything we know just from trying. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, (like the dimmer switch in todays episode!) but, if you put your mind to something then we believe anything is possible.
Our new van is called Safari. Koti, our old, and very loved first self converted van, meant 'Home', and Safari means 'Journey', which feels very appropriate as we embark on this new chapter as a travelling family.
So, let's let the Safari begin!
We are the Newbys, John, Tara, and our two little boys Crusoe and Sawyer. We’re a family who are pursuing an alternative lifestyle, and after two years of full time travel we’ve taken root on an abandoned farm in Northern Portugal which we’re renovating into our dream off-grid homestead. We release new videos every Sunday sharing our story, and we’d love for you to be a part of it with us. Please remember to SUBSCRIBE if you haven’t already, it’s free and super easy to do and it helps us hugely.
Thank you for being here. We hope that we can inspire you to Be Brave, Think Big and to Explore.

Tara, John & Crusoe I absolutely love the curves in Safari, especially around the bed (10:24). Regarding your LEDs that refused to dim (I know you bought alternatives), I know nothing about campervan conversions or wiring LEDs but I know from trying to buy them for our house that it’s extremely difficult to find any that dim. Every one I’ve seen says they aren’t for use with dimmers. I wonder if there was nothing wrong with your wiring. Maybe someone mixed up the contents of two packets and you ended up with undimmable ones in a packet that said “dimmable”. That would explain something else which doesn’t make sense - that everyone who tried to solve the (very simple) problem couldn’t. May I ask one question? I know that, when laying a laminate floor in a house, you have to leave a gap between the floor and the walls to allow for expansion and if you don’t, the laminate floor can buckle. It’s renown as a common mistake when people lay it themselves. Do you not need to do the same for a campervan with the wood panelling? It just seems odd because any vehicle will get far hotter on a sunny day than a house ever will so it should be all the more important yet I’ve never seen anyone even mention an expansion gap in a van conversion. To put it another way, has the wood in Koti or Safari ever shown any sign of buckling, or perhaps cupboard doors that stick because the wood has expanded? Thanks very much.

Hi Mister G! Good questions. The diner lights, I think it was a fault in the product, John had an electrician mate take a look and basically scratched the head. Strange, we found a decent work around in the end. Wood in a van. Tricky. So, more than shrinking and swelling, which is going to happen, squeaking is a bigger concern for us. Nothing worse than driving down a country lane and listening to the wood in the back rub against each other. Squeak squeak!! To avoid this issue I will leave a gap at every corner of about 5mm, And I also use silicone based glue, like a rubber so that there is flex. Both helpful and important. Sticks like shit works very well you can buy that from Screwfix. For the laminate, that’s basically a plastic board so won’t swell. Good questions friend. Thanks for touching base, great to have you along for the ride. 👍🙏🚐
