Episode 16 - Here's my in depth (detailed) video on how I used the IKEA Skorva midbeam and Metod suspension rail to create a bed platform in my Mercedes Sprinter 2015 #VanKarma #Vanconversion #Vanlife #Skorva #Metod

Thank you so much for thinking outside the box and using two different products to do this. Smarter than the attachments that the frame comes with. I am considering doing two rails, and moving the bed between a higher position and lower position so I can see out of the windows more easily, or allowing to store more items.

I bought 4 of these Skorva beams to make up 2 bed base sections that can be removed easily if required. I'm surprised more don't use them in van builds.

I am unfortunately from the US where they do not sell the Metod suspension rail here. Will have to find another rail solution for my build.

Ikea will give you the mounting plates for the Skorva beams for free in Canada for the asking. I’ve used these and an Ikea raising wood sprung bed frame (now discontinued) in my van.

Fantastic, same in UK but I wanted a more bombastic bracket. Hence brain stormed and came up with using furniture nuts.

I tried and tried to get the mounting plates here in the US. This was through their website after the purchase. No one I was chatting with on multiple occasions even knew what they were. My suggestion is if buying the Skorva in store secure the mounting plates before you leave. I had to buy the mounting plates online.

@@keithbrookshire You go to customer service parts area and ask and they give them to you. They were short 1 of the 6 I needed and actually mailed me 6 more for free.

@@kensoutham6828 That's fantastic info. I made the 120 mile round trip to purchase my rails. If I end up doing this again on a future build I'll know how to proceed. Thanks for the info.

Hi I'm planning on doing a similar set up for our van but still struggling with how to secure the rails to the van. I like the idea of securing the rails to the wood panels. But how did you attach the wood panels to the van? Simple screws or with River nuts?
@oklife62902 жыл бұрын
I used self tapping screws to secure the panels to the van. Did consider using Rivnuts but after some testing the screws worked fine.
@TheLineSeeker2 жыл бұрын
@@oklife6290 right. Good to know. And how much kg would you say the bed can support with this set up? Based on your experience.
@oklife62902 жыл бұрын
@@TheLineSeeker I've had 170 Kilos on it, no flex or movement at all. Ikea don't specify how much the beams can hold but a quick google will show you that each beam will carry 220-249Kgs. I've fitted four to spread the load. The Metod rails are six foot long and bolted to the side panels using 30cm penny washers on the rear, and a steel collar thru the ply which is an exact fit, so no movement. So the bolts go thru a metal collar in the ply so they don't sit or touch the ply ensuring no wear or tear. Hope this helps...

Thanks for sharing this! Can the Skorva beams slide on the method rails?
@oklife62902 жыл бұрын
Yes they do. I intend to be using 4 Skorva beams. Haven't finalised the bed base as yet but toying with the idea to include a means to lock the Skorva beams in place just for peace of mind. In theory once the base bed, mattress is installed that's enough weight to keep the beams static.
@mathijsvranken71862 ай бұрын
What did you end up doing yourself? Did you attach the Skorvas in any way? If so, how? Thx in advance!
@mightydingo2 ай бұрын
Hey, I had the Skorvas free so that they could slide across the side rails. That meant that I could slide them out in order to unfold the mattress on top which was otherwise folded when I was driving the van. This gave me extra space inside my van when not using the bed and it was a really flexible approach to my sleeping system. I would recommend that. One thing I had not considered, is that my Sprinter does not have the same width across the length of the van, which means that I could not slide one of the Skorvas as far as I wanted, leaving me with a 1.75m bed instead of 1.85m. Just something to consider.

I am sorry if I missed this, but how many attachment points are there for each Metod beam? It looks like perhaps 3? Thank you.

The beams simply clip onto the Skorva rail. They can slide along to any desired point. Does that answer your question?

Hi. Does the metod rail work ok and is it strong enough as it’s made for kitchen cupboards? Thanks
@oklife62902 жыл бұрын
I can only say based on my experience. Had 170 Kilos on the bed platform. Very solid, rigid, no flex or any concerns at all. I always tend to error on over engineering something versus under. So until I've used the setup over x period I can't say. But how I've created my setup exceeds pretty much everything else I've seen online. Just my view.

WOW! I love your video. Your system here looks like it could be adapted to a wide variety of vans, including mine. I have a question.... Help us Americans out. What does "chuffed" mean? At one point in the video, you said you, "...were pretty chuffed...". What does that mean?

@oklife62902 жыл бұрын
Yes, If you take the bed base off, the Skorva beams move VERY easily. One of the reasons I wanted this setup is so I can remove the bed (ON MY OWN) and have it totally clear.

Won’t the beams slide a lot on the rail?
@oklife6290 Жыл бұрын
Not at all. With the weight of the wood base, plus the beams are very stiff when extended into position. Plus I've made some spacer tabs that fit into the metod rail that stops the skorva beams being able to move, think of them like wedges.

The Skorva beams usually fit onto brackets that are approx' 2" wide and held into place with two "small" screws! Each beam is estimated to hold upto 250 Kilos (two adults in a bed). Hence I have 4 Skorva beams spreading the load across a 200cm bead which is 2" wide, and held into place with multiple 10mm steel / stainless steels bolts and penny washers spreading the load over 12mm marine hardwood ply! - I've placed all my weight onto one Skorva beam and had absolutely no flex or movement.
