Vincent van Gogh is one of the most mythologised figures in art history. The Dutch Post-Impressionist is often recalled as a madman, painting in a tortured frenzy.
Art historian and Senior Curator at the Scottish National Gallery Frances Fowle considers the brilliant and varied artist behind the myth. Van Gogh’s many depictions of olive trees demonstrate the surprisingly studious approach which went into his expressive brushwork, and his thoughtful interest in Impressionist colour theory. Spiritually charged but diligently sketched from life, Fowle sees Van Gogh’s olive grove paintings as a ‘pure vision of the landscape’.

As usual, I'd like to thank Heni Talks for their highly educational Videos and in particular, I'd like to express my gratitude to the Senior Curator at the National Galleries of Scotland, Francis Fowle, for her amazingly interesting description of Van Gogh's formidable painting and for the brilliant summary she made of his life story.

Thank you for this. I love her enthusiasm but I don't agree that just by looking at his painting/s you can say 'you can see he was feeling...' - it's only because we know (read?) he was suffering and in an asylum, you can't see that in the painting, well I can't - I just think they're wonderfully expressive with amazing colours and movement. But I've got a brain injury and am not an expert...

We totally agree, Jenny - his use of colour is tremendous, and it's true that one can read these works through many lenses.
