Thought that the transitions from Hot for Teacher to Eruption to You Really Got Me were amazing but I couldn't find a video with all three. So I combined a few from KZfaq!

Yeah. He looked really good during this time, and happy. I was glad that he had gotten over the rough times he experienced in the 2000s. There is not one person- no one- who has had a greater influence on me musically or in my love and enjoyment of music than Edward Van Halen. Not ashamed to admit that, as a 46-year-old man when he died, I shed a tear.

Steve Vai said it best when he was interviewed by Eddie Trunk right after EVH's death...he had his own personal list of who the best rock guitarists in the world were, and why he ranked them where he did. He only put two players on what he called his "what the f*** was THAT???" list: EVH and Jimi Hendrix. That's it. That's the list. Nobody else even came close as far as he was concerned.

While screwing over a far better bass player/outstanding backup vocalist for no legitimate reason to do so, it was all for his selfishness. If he’s gonna do that and still use the band name (even if it’s his last name), I hope Michael Anthony was getting a cut of every penny they made with 16 year old Wolfgang in there

What brings a tear to my eye are the number of times he smiles that big old Eddie smile not because of the fans or the music, but because he's looking over at Wolf. In those little moments, he's not EVH THE GUITAR GOD!!! He's just Ed, Wolfgang's pop. It also looks like a couple of times he tries to walk over to Wolf and play beside him but his cord isn't long enough. In "Eruption: Conversations With Eddie Van Halen," he says the greatest joy in his life used to be playing with his dad and Alex, but that playing with Alex and Wolf was even more special to him.

Comparing Ed to the best musicians throughout history would make more sense to a lot of people cuz it's more of an apples to apples comparison then. He's considered the modern day Mozart and i agree. Songs like intro to women in love, dance the night away, intro to pleasure dome, and 316 really showcase Ed's whimsical side which I believe can be compared to some of Mozart's pieces which were also whimsical in nature. Those songs from Ed that I just mentioned were beautiful and perfect; very melodic. Then of course you have solos like eruption and spanish fly which provide listeners with that other worldly in your face "WOW" reaction. And that's just the beginning of Ed's music. Ed was a genius of the modern era.

Since it was Jimmy Kimmel, they may have been instructed NOT to clap. That is how the late night shows are. I got to see David Letterman in the 80's and they were very strict about when to applaud and when to be silent. I shouted "Yeah Dave" just as everyone got quiet (not on purpose) and got kicked off the set. I would guess they are as controlling or worse 35 years later. 🙁

When they put the band back together in the mid-aughts, I honestly think Eddie knew, somewhere deep inside that his time on earth was limited. That is why it was so important to him that he brought Wolfie into the band; he loved that guy more than anything in the world. And it was so important for both of them to be able to spend as much time together as they could AND make music together. I was originally a little bummed when Michael Anthony wasn’t asked back to reunite the OG Van Halen, but I couldn’t be happier for the way things played out. Oh, and Wolfgang didn’t miss a freaking a beat on the bass. His backing vocals were on point too. Life has a funny way of working things out the way they were meant to be. Case in point right here. RIP Eddie!

If you haven't read it, you really need to read "Eruptions: Conversations with Eddie Van Halen." You're pretty much spot on. I don't know that Eddie knew he was dying at this point, and in fact, I think up until the last few months he probably thought he would make it through. But there was a palpable sense with him that he was done with addiction and all drama, and that the greatest joy in his life was playing music with Alex and Wolf. He mentions a number of times in the book that as a kid, his favorite moments were playing music with Alex and his dad. But around this time in his life, he said playing with Alex and Wolf was even better. He loved that kid so much. Now I'm gonna go watch WVH "Distance" and cry for four hours.

Dave guides/ed the style but the substance from the VH fam is what makes this performance most enjoyable. PS. Alex is the "soul" of the band and if it weren't the band's impeccable playing DLR would have been booed offstage (try isolating his vocals here haha!).

I think from memory, before this song, DLR was twirling the mic stand and he clipped his nose, the reason why he's got a band-aid over the bridge of his nose. All in the name of entertainment. rip Eddie, you're still an inspiration to many.

I got to see these guys a lot of times, lol. I saw them tour their first five albums, every show they played where I lived. I missed the 84 tour. Couldn't get tickets. Saw them once with Sammy. They were great, but not the same anymore. Saw them from a few feet away about four times. The rest, I wasn't so close. I'm a guitarist. Eddie holds the pick wrong...supposedly, lol. He used a thin pick, and he tossed many of them out into the crowd. He literally put one directly into my friend's hand in 1980. Bent right over, and made sure he put it right in the palm of his hand. Anyway, I play. I figured I'd be much better equipped to learn their songs, if I was standing right there watching exactly how he did it. Yeah, great. I knew HOW he did it. I just couldn't do it myself, lol! Best hard rock guitarist I ever saw, hands down. I saw some greats. Next on my list is probably Randy Rhoads.

Oh and it was very nice seeing Dave in front of the band. I was only 14, and in Michigan, when Van Halen hit it huge . They never played Michigan much until Sammy joined the group.

That is what greatness on the guitar looks like. The peak of playing potential. It still sounds raw and unpolished with that hint of human being. That makes it special. I can't watch it without a tear in my eye. He will be missed for all time.

Why is this so tight, so groovy, so chaotic, and so moving? Not just a lifetime of practice. It's because Eddie, Alex, and Wolfgang are blood relatives, and because Eddie, Alex, and Dave enjoy performing these tunes just as much as they did in the early days. There has never been any band like them, and there never will be. Also - a shout out to Dave. 46 years (holy shit!) since Van Halen I. He still has that energy, and his humor and improv have only improved in 4+ decades. I love Sammy, but Dave was the right man for this job.

Back in the day, both Dave and Eddie had undeniably huge stage presence. Incredibly, even in this clip, Eddie still had huge stage presence…whereas Dave looks like somebody trying desperately for attention. Although kudos to Dave, he soldiered on during this show, after bopping himself pretty badly across the nose with the microphone stand

No one, and I mean no one masters the stage with a stream of consciousness rap like Diamond Dave. When he told Eddie to "light 'em up" at 2:48 that was magical. He's got no shortage of fans but I wish more people would grasp the profound and brave artistic statement that is David Lee Roth.

@@reggiedunlop5167 When DLR left VanHalen he spent 2 years working as a paramedic in New York - by all accounts he did a stand out job and saved lives, when Michael Anthony's grandson died of a rare form of cancer DLR donated $100k in his memory to cancer charity to find a cure. I love the whole adventure of VH, with Diamond Dave or The Red Rocker BUT as much as I like this song DLR completely ruined You Really Got Me that night... seems lost in his head, not keeping the tempo when he started his sentences for about the whole song. Very sad to watch while the rest of the band are on fire 🤷🏻‍♂️
