As any guitarist will attest, this riff isn’t the easiest to play. Mad respect to everyone who has uploaded themselves playing this monster song. But, the honest truth is....there will always be something just off. They look like a guitarist playing a song they have learned to play. With Edward, the instrument and guitarist were one in the same. Seemingly effortless, jumping around playing a “C” based barre chord, technique with an amazing sense of rhythm and timing....this is why we all loved to hear and watch him play. I’ll never forget spending all night watching the Eruption solo as a teenager learning the tapping pattern. And I’ve watched all or parts of this concert multiple times over the last 30+ years. I’ll admit , I’m still in denial that he is gone. But one thing I’ve started doing is focusing on other components of VH songs... and how each aspect is layered or fit together. There are still amazing nuggets left for us to appreciate. Long live the king....

The breakdown before the solo capped off by the Sammy Hagar scream is something I can't unhear. The album version just doesn't do it for me anymore compared to this!
@brianjones84323 жыл бұрын
@@DownMemoryLaneParis Is there hate for the Sammy tenure? I mean sure, there are a few Roth loyalists out there, but Van Halen was doing their best work during the Sammy years. They never would have produced a song like this with Roth. Roth was essentially incapable of singing anywhere near this good. This band grew by leaps and bounds when Hagar joined. And the crowd turnouts for their shows was insane from the jump. 5150 came out of the gate as the first #1 album for either VH or Hagar. So yeah, while I see a few moaners and groaners on the internet trying to dog on the Sammy years, the results speak for themselves. They were selling out arenas and stadiums for almost ten years solid during that era of the band. And no, I'm not dogging on the Roth era either. I grew up through both, enjoyed both, and saw both live. But Roth never was, nor ever will be the powerhouse vocal or writer that Sammy was/is.
@davidwheeler98102 жыл бұрын
I've seen both versions of Van Halen live many times. They were far more consistent live with Sammy, because Dave's vocals veered from horrible to not bad depending on what night it was. Better road crew in the Sammy Hagar days. I saw one show after Women and Children First at the LA Sports Arena where the so sound was so bad for the 1st 30 minutes it was impossible to tell what the heck they were playing. Fair Warning Tour at the Forum was best I ever saw VH live.

Those who only think of Eddie tapping do not know much about Van Halen's songs or everything else Eddie was about. That wink and smile on his face transcended into his fingers. Fun, happy, warm. His playing was hard heavy at times, funky, slippery, crazy, sweet, fast there, slower here, wild, crunchy etc etc...he had it all. His rhythm playing was awesome. His tone. His tone 78--, and then he did it again with his new Ernie Ball in 91. Eddie was gold. pure gold. He will be missed by many including me. I love many guitar greats but Eddie was my fave.

This song is just a representation of two important aspects: 1. how much of a genius Eddie is when it comes to Riffs and guitar work. He completed this complete masterpiece by connecting a lot of riffs with various key modulations yet sounds soooo good together. Total Monster. 2. It also proves how tight Eddie and Alex’s were, not only on an instrumental level but something way more beyond that.. they were just emotionally connected. Alex’s drum work here is just totally in sync with Eddie’s genius parts that just makes it 100x better. Scary amount of bond and musicianship they had. Almost makes me want to cry. This song on an instrumental level is a pure masterpiece. Thank you Van Halen for all this amazing music..

Almost one year of his passing and still miss him like hell every day. Love both eras but if I have to choose one, I would take the classic era every time hands down, the first six albums with DLR are pure gold, however, when it comes to define my top five VH songs, which is really hard to do, it gets kinda interesting…in no particular order I would choose “Runnin’ with the devil”, “Mean street” and “In a simple rhyme” (David Lee Roth era), “New world/Without you” (Gary Cherone era), and last but not least…”5150” (Sammy Hagar era)…what a piece of a damn song!…not only Eddie’s incredible solo but his great rhythm playing, Michael’s outstanding bass line, Alex’s marvelous drumming and Sammy’s perfect vocals and lyrics…man, I really love this song and this live version is just nuts!!…ladies and gentleman, I give to the joy of the world THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN!!

It's amazing how EVH could jump and run around on stage the way he did, and played it flawlessly the entire time.

I was very shocked to read of Eddie's passing. Very fortunate to see them with Sammy and once with Dave. Would have thought Eddie was going to feel better and get them back for another tour with Dave singing. He was such a great guitarist and always smiled while playing.

RIP EDDIE 10/6/2020 as At about 4 PM Eastern, I heard that He was gone. A friend of mine just shared this great video, and I'm deeply saddened by his passing. He was a real life Wizard, and a genius. I was a teen when the arrived on the airwaves, I'm 63 now, almost 64. As a drummer I did covers of maybe 6 or 7 of his bands songs. But it's been years and today the Montreal Rock station stopped what was going on normally and played all Van Halen. SO amazing to hear how incredible he was all over again!

Ed was in an enlightened state this night. I've heard dozens of live boots of 5150 and the solos come nowhere near the otherwordly level of "Ed-ness" that this one does. An incredible moment.

Malmsteen was great, and dare I say may have had more technique then edddie... but he wouldn't be shit if it weren't for Eddie Van Halen. Eddie was the entire reason that playing at the speed of light became popular.

It's gotta be up there. It has metal, jazz, prog and classical elements in it. And he's doing step aerobics with Sammy while cueing Alex at the end.

Was a VH fan before this concert came out on VHS, but this performance inspired me to learn the guitar and I'd imagine many others too. The way he played through this with his unique style of perfection mixed with unpredictable, gun slinger approach to the guitar makes it unique only to him. One of a kind and we'll never see it again.

This version of 5150 is my EVH lighting being captured in a bottle. It makes me so sad and so euphoric in equal measures since his passing. EVH, 'The king' indeed!
