Edward Van Halen is a virtuoso. They invented a method of writing music just so they could put Edward's music on paper. It's called guitar tablature. This man was not only playing the guitar; he was writing history.

No guitarist in the history of music shocked the audiences like EVH. No one. His skill and mastery of that instrument is one and done. No one will make that big of impact again not before him or after.

No one will ever compare to Eddie Van Halen. When they talk about Rock music in 100 years, they will be talking about EVH. They will watch this video, they will hear this tone unknown.....and then they will understand. I'm thankful I was here at the same time he was for over 40 years.

@@reallymysterious4520 of course Jimi did..no brainer but not to the same shock level as EVH. Eddie's skill level compared to the rest of the guitar players out there when he came out was 40-50 years ahead of their time. Jimi was about 15 years ahead of his time...EVH playing is so far superior to Jimi's

Saw VH live twice. Once in '84 with Diamond Dave and again in 88' with Sammy. Eddie was something special. An innovator of both the guitar and the way it was played. What I'll always remember about EVH, aside from the music he gave us, is the sly grin he always had on stage. You could tell he was doing what he loved. EVH shares the GOAT slot with SRV in my opinion. Two different styles, each a master of his own.

I write this with a Frankenstrat in my lap. I first saw Van Halen at the Cow Place in Daily City in 1984, then again in 86 with Sammy, then 88, then 89 for Monsters of Rock at Candlestick (with Metallica, Dokken, and the Scorpions). I saw VH with Gary Cherone in 94. Then Sammy reunion tour, and then the Dave reunion tour. Eddie Van Halen is my favorite guitar player in the world. I literally miss him every day. RIP Eddie, you will always be the best in my heart!

Some guitar players that say Edward was the best they had ever heard or seen are Steve Lukather who himself is an unbelievable talent / session musician. Knows a thing or two about guitar. Ted Nugent great player himself, Niel Schon, Billy Corgan, Sammy, Hammett, Zak Wild, and on and on...these guys know the guitar inside and out and they believe Edward was the best that's ever been...no doubt. I know alot of people default and say Jimi but if you really look at the two players (and they both deserve to be the two at Mt Rushmore of playing) Edward is far more talented than Jimi...so much more fluid and versatile as well as technically far superior....I live them both but give me Jimi's best 7 min live playing compared to Edward's best 7 min live playing and there is absolutely no comparison.

In 1978, two albums came out that changed the music scene forever. Hi Infidelity, REO Speedwagon...and Van Halen. Rock music wasn't as hard...Eagles, Pink Floyd, Skynyrd...the harder stuff was seen as Ted Nugent and Rush. Nugent went into an interview about a festival being put on in Texas, and Van Halen was a new act on the bill....he said the entire backstage area nearly had a heart attack when he started Runnin With the Devil and by the time he got around to Eruption, they were ALL watching him. VH essentially put the entire disco genre six feet under. I think if he hadn't died so young in 1982, Randy Rhodes would be the real king on guitar, even though his love was classical.

When learning guitar (after Stevie Ray,, Angus and Malcolm Young, Gary Moore, Jimmy Page, the Beatles, and Eddie made me get one) There were lots of times I thought, "I will never be able to........like this or that person" Then there was a moment after a year, that I had an epiphany. Then another a few months later. I kept getting to new plateaus and then getting stuck. The next plateau is right there in front of you and they do come. Patience and practice enable you to have the guitar become and extension of you. Just like every carpenter smacked their thumb with a hammer dozens of times before they get it right, everything comes with muscle memory and soul.

Nice reaction. Amazingly Eddie's greatness didn't just lie in his guitar playing but also in his mastership over the instrument itself. By this I mean the guy worked on redoing the electric guitar until it sounded the way he wanted it too. Including creating the unique sound of Eddie's "Brown Tone". All part of way when other guitarist tried to do what he did. They had a hard time doing it. Their guitars equipment just wasn't what he was working with. Some would say he was cheating. lol Few others could ever match both the playing skills and the Frankenstein mad genius mind Eddie had when it came to the guitar itself. He's really unmatched in this feat. When Eddie hit the world, some just stopped and stared, Others put their guitar down and walked away in shame. And yet others picked up the guitar inspired to try to do more. Eddie changed the music world. He also did the guitar solo in Michael Jacksons Beat it. Moreover, he did some rearranging of the song as well. Making Eddie on the number one song in the US and the number two song in the US at the same time. His influence will last for a long time to come. That impact is what makes Eddie the greatest of all time.

Like Jimi, Eddie changed the way guitar would be played forever and influenced so many others. He was certainly blessed with this talent!!

Funny Eddie story. In 82, when famed producer (and performer) Quincy Jones tried to call Eddie to do the solo for Jackson's "Beat It", he called Eddie while he was playing in his studio and Ed thought it was a prank call and replied to the caller (Quincy), "Stop calling, you fucking asshole!" Then he finally got the call where Quincy said, "It's Quincy Jones!" and Eddie goes, "Uuuugh, I'm SORRY!" He said he felt like an idiot. He later did the solo and helped rearrange the song for no charge or royalties. Quincy later said in an interview that Ed was a sweetheart and a brilliant musician to work with in the studio. Heavy rock wasn't QJ's usual domain. After it was over, Quincy mailed Eddie a thank you note signed, "Quincy Jones (The Fucking Asshole)" haha. Eddie claimed in an interview that he framed it. Funny zinger by QJ.

Finger tapping wasn't new. What he did with finger tapping techniques was to apply it to the electric guitar, record companies in North America didn't know how to transcribe it to sheet music.

It was being used on electric guitar long before he started playing

@@jeffdavis6715 Very true. What I was referring to was in North American rock genre. It seems like that most think that what he did was to invent finger tapping, this he did not do. He incorporated it into the rock guitar style. But yes. There was a guy in Italy who actually recorded finger tapping on his album, and no he didn't invent it neither. Yes, it was done long before king Edward was given born. Not just on guitar, but on other instruments; so it's understandable not something new.

Not only was Eddie technically the greatest guitarist ever but his creativity pushed him into the likes of immortals! The best comparison i can make would probably be Maynard Ferguson - legendary jazz trumpeteer! Like i said ... To be technically and creatively that good in one package puts them (and very few others) among the immortals! If we're talking about songwriter/performers with creative genius, that's completely different. I'd probably have Mozart, Charlie Parker, Harold Arlen, Dave Grusin, Jimmy Webb, Billy Joel, Carole King, David Gates, etc, etc, etc.

I always wondered about that because SRV was a huge Hendricks fan and Eddie took playing guitar way past Hendricks but I have never seen or heard an interview with SRV commenting on EVH or vice versa
