Not the riff just the solo. That riff and the rest of the Thriller album was done by Steve Lukather from Toto. He was one of the top studio session players in L. A. and was producer Quincy Jone's go to guy for studio work. Steve is on about 300 records as a session player.

When Van Halen's first album came out in 1978 (?) it was one of those very few albums that changed everything. Boston and Frampton Come's Alive were two more. By the time Jump was released Eddie Van Halen was a guitar God! "Lines On My Face" off Frampton Comes Alive is a hidden GEM! The late 70's was an incredible time for music!

I'm still looking for a record that matches the production on the Boston debut. It's still ahead of its time in 2023. I was 7 when Boston dropped and 9 when VH 1 came along. Both albums are etched in my brain forever.

Hey guys, Love your channel, Van Halen, in any form is good, each version has it's good and bad, but since I was a fan of Montrose back in the 70's I didn't mind Sammy taking the reins for a bit, of course the original line up is and always be Van Halen, I like both iterations myself, spending my career in FM radio spinning tunes just like this in the 80's, 90's, 2000's, and recently retired...love the content guys, keep it up!!!

I remember when this came out. This song and Panama over the radio in the kitchen, the car, to school, work... This was a big song. Panama was bigger. I think Panama was Van Halens push into legendary icon status. The 1984 album was epic. (Before it came down and changed into Van Hagar).

Track : Highway 61 Revisited Album: Second Winter Artist: Johnny Winter, 1967 This is an iconic performance by a legend, the greatest slide guitarist of all time. He lived with Muddy Waters for ten years down in Mississippi, right off Highway 61 on Tabacco Road. You may have done the live version but it was done 40 years later. This version was done when Johnny was in his teens and shows his natural, god given talent.

Man, growing up in the 70's and 80's we're a blast. So much great music, so many great concerts. I don't believe I ever heard someone play the guitar as good as Eddie did in concert. He had incredible rymth and timing. He enjoyed every second of it. I will never forget that smile! You guys have to check out some of Sammy's songs. I recommend Poundcake or Right Now.

As a Van Halen fan from the first album I always appreciated the combination of great music and a lot of fun lyrics and nonsense during the Roth period; after he left I in turn came to like the Hagar period even more maybe it’s because I was older and was drawn to the more “mature” lyrics that was being written and to me a more melodic style of rock that complimented Sammy’s vocals best. This album did catapult VH into the stratosphere with a few heavily played tracks and videos. Another great reaction gentlemen! ✌️😊

This album was my first introduction to Van Halen. My older brother had it on cassette and I stole it from him. Every song on it is killer. I never had a problem with the band adding keyboards. They were already kind of a pop band with their vocals and catching choruses, plus Eddie's riffs were hooky as hell. Van Halen is the ultimate party band and will continue to be a huge influence on rock music.

Gotta be honest, as a "boomer" (b.1964) when I heard the first 4 bars of this LONG AWAITED return of one of my "fav bands" of all time, I could have cried. I HATED IT. We 70s and 80s hard rocking metal heads hated keyboards. (Think I went and put on Judas Priest or Iron Maiden or something) Today, I can only say it is STILL one fine album from STILL one of the greatest RnR bands of all time. 🤘😎 Much love, fellas.

@@knightngail1 Exactly! I agree wholeheartedly. When VH first released "1" I couldn't get enough but slowly grew to despise DLR. He's a top notch SHOWMAN, no doubt but was never crazy about his singing. Neither was the record company who "wanted someone better." I loved his solo stuff ONLY due to VAI playing on it....that's it. In retrospect, I feel VH could have been sooo much more without DLR's influence. "VH" would have still been HUGE, no matter who's front man, but perhaps their musical direction would have still been rock n roll but vastly different.

David Lee Roth was one of those hard to control hyper kids and his parents sent him to some kind of school. He got into martial arts at a very young age so what you see is very real. A confirmed bachelor that really got around with the women. I have been of Van Halen ever since their 1st album. Won meet and great tickets and met them. Just got to shake hands and get a picture with a disposable camera that they gave to each group.

I'm a huge Van Halen fan and I remember very clearly to this day the first time I hear Van Halen I in 1978. I was fourteen years old and just discovering all of the great music going on at the time and it blew my mind so much so that it inspired me to learn and play guitar and I have been playing ever since. With that said, Jump from 1984 is not one of my favorites of theirs. What many people don't know is that Eddie was an award winning concert pianist as a child and the piano was his first instrument. During the 1984 album he wanted to start incorporating keyboards into his music (which he continued into the Sammy Hagar years) and got a lot of flack from us purists at the time. Over time, I've come to appreciate Jump and Eddie's introduction of the keys into his music.

This album (1984) was brimming with good songs. Sadly, it was also the last for the old Van Halen. David left the band to go on and do his solo stuff. Van Halen snagged Sammy as the new front man. Old Van Halen gone, new Van Halen not bad at all, but different than before. This one is bittersweet.

Well this sub loves this whole album!! I think a lot of VH fans love their first album from the late 70s AND this one (& the ones in between). The divide comes after this album when they lose David Lee Roth and get Sammy Haggar. Then the music does noticeably change. So it's Van Halen vs 'Van Hagar'. I'm definitely Van Halen w/David Lee Roth side, but there were some good Van Hagar songs, too.
