David Lee Roth the singer for Van Halen is the ultimate showman there has never been one like him in rock ‘n’ roll whatever he lacked in vocal ability he made up for the showmanship and Bravado. Van Halen without almost any early videos when videos meant everything sold millions of albums for every one of their albums certainly one of the top five greatest rock ‘n’ roll guitarist of all time is the innovator Of the harmonic and tapping on the guitar he did things on that first album that nobody had ever heard before and created sounds but nobody was able to emulate at the time. Definitely one of my favorite bands ever they’ve got too many great songs to list .for me pretty much everything off of the first album the second album third album on and on . First, he was very nice to a shy girl. Second, his trainer was the famous kickboxer, Benny the Jet. And Roth took his martial arts and fitness very, very seriously. There was a lot he could have bragged on, but mostly he told me about Benny and how hard he'd practiced doing a backbend so he could pick up a handkerchief from the floor behind him. (Look at the back of their first album.) A lot of people put him down, but he's a showman and he's dedicated to what he does.

When this song comes on the radio unannounced, I know *exactly* what it is from the first chord on the keyboard - literally the first note - that synth sound is totally distinctive and makes that song what it is. Thanks for reacting to it!

I love your channel Jamal. Your willingness to explore genres of all kinds along with your appreciation of artistry, showmanship and talent is refreshing. Your reaction to "the split" was awesome. Thanks for diving into these classics, so many people pass judgement on music blindly based upon assumptions.

When Eddie Van Halen “cut loose” on the guitar & gave a song the “extra OOMPH” it needed to make it a hit, it was an experience to behold 🔥🎸🎸🎸🔥 For those of us fortunate enough to live through the late 80’s & 90’s, we got to experience some of the greatest guitarists in the world & even before that, like Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Richie Sambora.... To name just a few & Eddie Van Halen...... DAMNNN!!! He was epic to watch & listen to 🎸🎸🎸✅✅✅..... The big hair, the big outfits, the big sounds..... TRULY A GREAT TIME TO BE ALIVE 🔥✊️😜🔥

The front man singer is David Lee Roth who is a practicing martial artist. He studied Kenjutsu, a Japanese sword fighting style since his adolescent age. If I remember he also has studied Brazilian Jujitsu, Kenpo Karate and I believe Aikido. So those jumps, splits and kicks he actually was serious about. PEACE to All!!!

Diamond Dave was nuts. He was a karate guy when he was younger and an athlete but hes such an over the top showman. As he got older he got so insanely silly on stage you would think he thought he was in a broadway play. Nutty ass dude even just in his normal life. You watch interviews with him and no one would understand wtf he was talking about lol. Weird ass metaphors that only made sense to him constantly 😂

I was 11 years old and this video WAS MTV. When I would spend the night at my buddy's house on Friday, we would wake up on Saturday, ride our bikes 9 blocks to the donut shop, ride back, eat and watch MTV for 3 or 4 hours. Then spend the rest of the day playing outside. The 80s were magical and I'm very thankful for being able to experience them.

My first major injury came when I went to a Halloween party at a club years ago dressed as David lee Roth. The dj put this song on and my friends instantly starting getting people to step back and form a circle on the dance floor because they knew I was going full on Dave mode. Long story short, I jump up and landed the same split he did at the beginning on the video. Problem was the whiskey I was drinking told me I could do it, but my body said “oh no no no” and I tore the sh$t out of my hamstring. But I soldiered on and finished the song kicking with my opposite leg. Woke up the next morning with the back of my leg black and blue, good times lol!

There’s kind of a beautiful humble confidence to saying “Can’t you see me standing here I got my back against the record machine / I ain’t the worst that you’ve seen” as a pickup line. I don’t claim to know what this song is about for real or anything. Perhaps it’s just an innocent tune about the joys of jumping. But I’ve always read it as an ode to this kinda lazy, bar’s-closing-in-15-minutes, ditch last, “hey, why not?” hookup proposition. There’s a sort of sleazy elegance to it that I admire in spite of myself.

It's said that David Lee Roth is trained in martial arts, thus the splits and jumps. Also, both Eddie and Alex are classically trained pianists since childhood, and used that in their respective areas of expertise. In fact, Eddie had hell trying to get the guys to record Jump, til he built his own home studio.
