Wow, he's so far ahead of his time. This was recorded in 1977 and it's like he came from another planet compared to everything else at the time!

honestly, if you really compare it to other rock acts from the time, i dont think this was so far off from what had already been done. it seems to me like a very clear evolution from the attitude, virtuosity and speed of Deep Purple and the more bluesy riffs from Led Zeppelin. Van Halen just took those things and made them more extreme and it worked cause they were all really good!

@space_kat1 well said, every music pioneer learns from and builds off of those who came before them, and Ed was no different. I hope to one day call Ed the second greatest guitarist of all time, provided someone can build off of what he did and push it even further. Until that day comes, he's simply the GOAT.

@@epsilon6516I can't think of any sort of playingstyle, that does not exist today to be honest.. back then electric guitar was farely 'new' and unexplored, but today.. Even though absolutely not my style, I would say the newest radically different stuff is this whole tim henson/ichika nito movement of modern tapping and super technical and fast style of playing with lots of chord changes all over the neck..don't dig it personally though

Here is something about Eddie writing or playing a song. Eddie filled up the spaces. When most people write a song, if you hear it without the bass, and drums. Sometimes without the singer. You might not recognize the song. This is a perfect example. With just him playing the guitar. You know the song. With Ed's noodling and filler. There isn't any dead air. I think Ed, might not have always gotten credit for that

David Lee Roth is now defined as either a circus ring leader in concert or "he can't sing live and never could". Or of course that he's the greatest front man of all time. But one thing I think is for sure is that credit has to be given for writing melodies and lyrics over Eddie's playing. He's not playing traditional 3 and 4 chord songs so this couldn't have been easy. So, props to Dave for that!

Now we already know that Eddie is the GOAT!!!. But as a "much older" original long-time Van Halen Fan. I think the thing that hits me most when I listen to any of these Guitar Only tracks like this one. Is just how much I underestimated Early David Lee Roth's contribution to the band as a whole. Could you just imagine how many singers would struggle to be presented with a bare track like this one - and then be told - O.K, now sing a great thundering vocal to this incredibly unique guitar playing???

This is why he's the GOAT. His rhythm was just as good as his soloing... not many can say that.

Fantastic! For anyone that's worked in that setting, does that sound like a punch-in just after the solo ends? I would never have heard that if not for this iso track. Man, he is the GOAT, though..
