Ever fantasized about ditching the daily grind, tossing caution to the wind, and hitting the road with nothing but the essentials? Well, that's pretty much my life story. Join me on my van life debut as I tackle the age-old question: 'Am I Too Old For This?
About Me
Hi, I'm Nancy. My channel is about doing what I love to do, which is hiking (usually solo) and camping in the wild. I publish shorts regularly and a longer video every weekend.

51 isnt a problem, its van life without the van! My high school buddy is 58 and he’s lived in a van for 5 years, no real problems to speak of, but I would say a van is as minimal as i would go. A toilet , shower, and a comfortable bed make life much more doable . Good luck with your journey!

To make such a drastic lifestyle change, my thoughts would be to practice it part time first so you can plan your build a little better. Hope you continue to enjoy van life.

As long as you're physically able to hop into and out of a vehicle age isn't too big of a deal. What you might wish to consider is a Toyota Sienna Hybrid mini van if you find the Jeep too cramped. It gets pretty good milage, and being a hybrid you should be able to put the climate control into Auto mode while parked and it'll first drain the hybrid battery to run AC or heat , then automatically fire up the engine once it senses the battery is depleting....recharging the battery while continuing to provide heat or AC, and rinse and repeat which should end most climate control and condensation issues. But off roading isn't it's forte.

You go girl; 68 here- and still tent camping myself. As for moisture/condensation issues…my folks used desiccated crystals- sold in small tubs, that absorb. They had the same issues in all their RVs, no matter the class.

Grown kids, I started living in my van at 51. Currently I am 65,. I achieved my goal two years ago….. being somewhere and taking care of horses. currently on 20 acre horse ranch on the hills above Santa Barbara,CA “ nothing evolves in a comfort zone“ Being mentally, physically and spiritually challenged every day is much healthier for me.

Nancy glad you chose the 6 cylinder and 4x4 model. My 4 cylinder has continually stranded me after 50k even with Jeep's extended warranty. I slept on the left side as well. Yoga mats and a quilt made the diff. I enjoyed traveling in my 50s but health issues changed everything at 60. Been resting and recovering for 3 years now. Getting the itch again but the homeless population has increased in the US by 200% in the last 2 years. Maybe i will see you on the road. Planning a trip to the NW after Labor Day. 😁

You’re a great storyteller! I can’t wait to see where this journey goes. My wife and I are 69 years old and we just built a camper van. We’re not Van lifers, just travelers that like to return to our home near Niagara Falls. You definitely aren’t too old for your adventures but I often think we are. We aren’t spry 69er’s. The affects of old age are definitely limiting our mobility but we do as much as we can. Enjoy your young 51.

I am not sure how much money you have but, if you can, buy a Springbar or Kodiak tent. if that is too much money, some tarps and stakes so you can have a covered area behind your trunk. Even a pop up tent could help with some privacy issues and increases the living space. OR, get an awning for your car and put down a carpet/large mat. If you have a few thousand dollars, maybe a Runaway trailer or even a basic cargo trailer might be an option. Granted, some trailers may prevent you from going into the back country so look into off-road styles, if you want. The cool thing with a trailer of any type is you can park your vehicle and trailer side-by-side with 6 or so feet between them and put a tarp over head, acting as a roof. Drastically increases living space. Again, I make these suggestions not knowing your budget so maybe these are not realistic options for you.

It isn't van life if you're living in an SUV! Having a van suitably sized for your needs is key. I live about half the year in a 144 wheelbase sprinter. I can fit all my surfboards, wingfoiling gear and a mountain bike and still have plenty of room. My bed is more comfortable than the one I have at home. Space and comfort are important. Upsize your rig and it will be way better. Best wishes

Is there freefom though, or are you at the mercy of so many other things....I just don't buy thar its as great as KZfaqrs make it all out to be..... I'd be spending the whole day worrying about where I could legitimately and safely park my vehicle!

Honestly, Eirene, I believe people like me are at the mercy of many factors. Weather, parking restrictions, road closures, safety, health, finances, and job commitments just to name a few. Some days are better than others. I'm just beginning this journey but I'll share how I find my secret spots in an upcoming video.

@@nancytrekker wonderful....On the one hand I need to get out there, on the other hand I wonder if the frustrations would take away from it all. Perhaps if I was younger, with a man by my side I'd feel differently...look forward to your take on it all ...with thanks
