The pro is that it is cool as f. The con is having to endure stories when you get gas.

Many years ago I owned a '71 VW camper van. Last year of the upright VW engine which made working on it easier. Plus, it was the first year of front disc brakes. But it was underpowered (they all were) and it did not have A/C. I drove over most of North America in that thing and was the most fun vehicle I ever owned. But I grew tired of not having A/C. I live in southern California and my driving is now mostly in the southwest. So I sold it. I have many fine memories of that camper but I don't think I'd want another one now. I'm older. I want air conditioned comfort and I don't want to be constantly shifting anymore. There is just too much stop and go driving here in So. Cal. I hope you have as much fun with yours as I did with mine. Safe travels.

Great video. Congratulations from Brasil! The vw bus in Brasil was manufactured until 2014. It was the last country to manufacture the vw bus T2. And here in Brazil the model manufactured was the T2, same model as your van. I never saw T3 here. good look.

I have a 74 and we love it! The pancake engine is much stronger and much more dependable than the upright. (I have a 67 too)

Keep the RPMS at 3200 and it will drive through any conditions ( and make sure the fan belt is properly tension-ed with all tin in place )

That is horrible advice. A 1969 bus with a T1 boxer engine can go flat out on rpms for hours. Dude says he doesn't drive on interstates, but he should. You do not want to drive a car with a regular engine on high revs, but you do want to use the revs on a T1 engine. Drive a few hours on the interstate highways and your engine will burn off the crud and be a better and more agile engine.

I had two VW vans in the seventies and I miss them so much now. I 68 and crave another VWvan but would have to have power steering. Im determined to get one even though all my friends think im ma. I currently have a lovely Mercedes but its just a car! VWs have personality and get many, many waves from other drivers. Anyone got a good one in England to sell to me. Id like a Westfalia if possible. Thank you

About how often do you get engine problems? I'm really hoping to get a VW bus one day and travel like you guys, but I don't know the first thing about mechanics. 😂 I can learn though! ~:~

Not often. We hit a patch where we had a bunch, but it’s rare now. My husband just drove it 3000 miles in 7 days with zero issues besides one flat tire!

I drove VW buses for 20 years. Engines last about 4 to 6 years or around 60,000 miles. Get Bosh only for electrical system unless you upgrade to Electronic ignition which I recommend. Drove our 1966 bus in 1996 around the country with 4 people total. We had to replace the leaking gas tank in Colorado, the accelerator cable in L.A., front wheel bearing in AZ, and it ran like crap from Flag Staff to Albuquerque. Seemed like it was running lean but kept on going. I drove it for several month after the trip back to Georgia before the motor was rebuilt again. (3rd & last rebuild on original motor now it has a 71 bus motor) They are the funnest vehicle to drive. I recommend 1971 or older as they said unless money is not an option as 1976 to 1979 are more dependable motors, last about 100K miles, go faster, & better breaks which is safer on the freeway. Repairs are way more expensive though. Yes you want to be able to 70 mph so trucks do not pass you . It's not fun. Drive the backroads when possible. Greatest vehicles ever made! I hope you can find a good one they are getting pricey.

I'm late to the party here, but I gotta ask: one of the cons y'all pointed out was "space"... I know VW Type 2's are small, but watching your vid I came to the thought of "is it REALLY that tiny, or are these two folks large Nordic people?" Can y'all tell me your height, so I can have a sense of scale for this vid? I've never been in a Type 2 that old, only an '82 Westfalia.
