I've known Van since I was a small child. Classically trained as a mezzo-soprano it didn't stop me sitting on his lap & singing songs of all genres (a LOT of Irish folk). Van was brought up under the sound of the gospel & this & many other songs he sings show this. He's also one of the most genuine & unaffected men you could wish to meet. He'll always be just, "our Van"😊.

@@kidkanoo It has been. When my spouse & I met, we both lived in areas of the U.K. & Ireland. I don't believe in "fate" but "guidance" & we both ended up in the same city. He was close friends with Mark & David Knopfler (They founded "Dire Straits", "Sting"/ Gordon Sumner - although he took himself too seriously too soon). My contributions were Van & the whole Bhraonaoin "Clannad" (The Brennans & two uncles, as I wrote, formed the Irish/New Age/Folk band "Clannad"). Over all, my two favorites Are #1. Van#2. Mark😊

My dear husband passed away just before the 2020 covid shutdown. This was one of our songs. He was the love of my life and my music buddy. We only had about 3 good years together. Too little. He would often ask me "Have I told you today how much I love you?" Bittersweet memories....."Fill my heart with gladness, take away my sadness, ease my troubles, that's what you do."

You DO know that this was written by Van Morrison as a hymn to the Creator? I think that this is a wonderful song for your husband's passing and the Van Morrison would be happy that you honored him that way. Hope that makes it even more meaningful for you. Like God was saying "I love you both" when you chose it. You had a great treasure and I am sure you will meet again and this song will be playing.

I was doing an outdoor art show, and from somewhere nearby, this song was playing. I mellowed in the moment and gazed back over my 78 years of living and thought of some of those I actually did love and of those that I thought I loved as well.

When I was younger, I first heard this song done by Jim Reeves. I thought it was about a man saying all those sweet words to his wife. Later when I was grown, I heard the same song sang by Van Morrison. I realised that it was a person saying all those wonderful words to God. My favourite part is where he/she says, "Ease my troubles that's what you do." I can totally relate.

Van Morrison's Have I Told You Lately has always been one of my favorite feel good songs (that voice, those lyrics...melt my heart) but now it takes on new meaning as the perfect Mother Son Wedding Dance Song. After 32 years, 7 months, and 20 days my first born child officially becomes a man in my eyes, but in my heart will forever remain my sweet little boy, my blessing from the Lord.

......This song was actually a poem he wrote, giving thanks to God ( Creator , Lord Almighty Infinite Spirit, ...) and then set it to music. So you are not far off in your way of thinking what this particular song represents.

I read your comment and I'm sorry to read that you lost your daughter. You can be sure, she is now safe in God's memory. But I would like to give you hope through Gods word that was written down in the bible. Do you know, God promises in the bible lovingly a time, when you will be able to see your daughter again here on earth?!
