This is the most detailed RV-12 video. This video covers all aspects of the plane. You'll also get to see how the plane flies.
( This RV-12 is for sale If you are interested in the details you can find them here:
www.aerolifeaviation.com/Item... )
RV-12 is a special plane. RV12 is the first Van’s factory built plane so you can buy it pre-build or get a kit and build it by yourself. It's an experimental plane while also able to fall in the light sport category (depending on the build). It's also a great training airplane because it is easy to learn. You can get all the way up to commercial license with an RV-12.
It is very economical to own and fly burning only 3-5 gal of fuel. RV-12 has special features like removable wings and flaperons.
In the video we compare the RV12 to 2 similar, popular normal category planes; Cessna 152 and Piper Tomahawk. In the comparison you'll see that the RV12 comes out ahead in many categories.

There is much to love, Van's nailed most of the design. Leaves too little for some of us E-LSA builders to choose, however. If I can't have a US made air cooled engine then it is off my list. Same for not having a tailwheel option. I am surprised Van went along with a reduction drive liquid cooled engine. That said, slick wing removal, cockpit forward canopy, and payload are exceptional. Van's is a class act, just not for everyone. Yet, most will find it difficult to find better, particularly for SLSA customers.
@aerolife1646

The Rotax liquid cooled, geared engine is not a common design but they are well proven engines and very popular. A reason they probably have to use these technologies is to keep the weight to power ratio high which makes airplanes more capable. Thank you for watching the video.

I have a 2010 RV-12 and I learned a few things from your video. So first, thank you, and well done! I purchased my RV-12 about a year ago and fell in love with it as it perfectly fits my mission. A weekend getaway plane with room for me and my wife, a full bag of gas, and two RON bags. The only drawback is there is not much room for anything but the bare basics (like a supercar). You also need to check your ability to manipulate the flight controls as the seating position does not offer much adjustment without pedal blocks as you pointed out. Nice job! I might add one thing. No need for carb heat due to the routing of the exhaust manifolds over the carbs. Wow, they really thought of everything. If you are height to weight proportionate the flight controls are easy to manage. The useful load is ample and will allow larger folks to meet their mission requirements assuming that they do not interfere with the range of movement of the flight controls based on body shape.

It is worth noting that the rotax prefers 91 octane car gas. It is also worth knowing that the rotax simply does not burn oil like an old style engine. I have been involved with a rotax fleet of planes for a dozen years and never heard of folks adding oil between changes. It may happen, but it is uncommon. Its a great motor and if maintained reasonably, they are very reliable.

I actually look forward to your videos as you do a fantastic job. I don’t really care for the plane with that engine, the avionics, or the removable wings. I think the price is ridiculous, owner is likely hoping/dreaming to capitalize on the current crazy used plane market. If i could find them, I could purchase 2 x 150 Aerobats for the cost of this. The FAA must have changed the law for a commercial pilot rating. When I got mine it required a complex aircraft: retractable gear, constant speed prop, 200 horse power engine. That was in 1978 and I have not flown in many years.
@aerolife1646

You're correct, the commercial requirement has changed. That's the reason that some manufactures have stopped making complex trainers - like the Piper Arrow - because of this change in requirements and other planes qualifying now.

The nose gear seems extremely weak. The full horizontal stab for an elevator is needed so that the nose gear can be lifted as soon as full take off power is applied. It's necessary to pick up the nose gear off the ground immediately and keep it off the ground until flight. Landing must be just as touchy... if you watch closely they have to keep it off the ground until the elevator (which is held at max deflection) can no longer carry the nose gear. I wonder if the nose gear speed limits are published anywhere.

The center inlet that has the oil radiator also has a tunnel that runs off to the right (looking at it from the front) that takes air to the radiator for the liquid coolant. The cylinder heads are liquid cooled and the cylinder slides are air cooled. It’s considered obsolete now, but the tube that is attached to the right inlet (still looking at it from the front) leads to a fiberglass plenum on top of the engine - that directs air to the cylinder sides. A very important thing to do on a pre-by inspection is determine when the coolant hoses on the engine have last been replaced. They’re on a five-year replacement cycle.

She said it’s homebuilt experimental that falls into the SLSA category, wrong, it’s in the LSA category, it’s only SLSAbif it’s factory built, not homebuilt.

You are correct about ELSA. The video is also correct as it says " Based on the build" and some RV-12 are factory built.

Only a few planes have parachutes. It’s probably not cost effective to put a parachute in a plane like this.

I love it! I see you still have that 177 in the background though. Would be a tough decision for me, hoping to buy something next year...
@aerolife1646
@aerolife1646 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. we are planning to list 177RG soon, after the annual. If you figure out what type of flying you will be doing and how many people you will have 80% of the time, it would be easier to decide what type of plane you need.

That paint job looks brand new... I think with new lights, new fork, full wheel pants, added full interior, you'd have a hard time getting the weight much under 765 -770#. Suggest you put each wheel on a scale with an empty fuel tank and redo your weights and balances and overall weight of the plane. Or top the fuel tank off and subtract 119 # for 19.8 gallons of fuel capacity. $84,000 for first generation Dynon... it's not even SkyView D-1000 with GPS, intellivision and map capabilities, let alone ADS-B in and out with weather, live TFR's and lightning reports.

Thank you for watching the video and your comment. The weight and balance usually carries forward after each of the upgrades. It's usually only necessary to reweigh if you don't have the most recent weight and balance. This is a review video, not a sales video; we don't like to discuss things related to sales on our channel. But regarding your comment, airplane values have gone up and prices are very high right now. Since this is the experimental category there is a very small price difference in those electronics.

Usually the pilot in command does fly the left seat but that isn't a requirement. CFIs fly from the right seat during training when they are acting PIC.

Flys great but handles like garbage on the ground, max crosswind component of only 11 knots. You take off from an airport you may not be able to get back in if the wind shifts. Needs a bigger rudder with more authority.

Central USA is great for flat, uninterrupted farming land. A little safer in case of emergency because of all the possible landing spots. But does not have the view you can get in the mountains of the west or even east coast. Definitely some beautiful views if you are lucky to live by the mountains and can fly them.
