I have this reel and it's great. The factory used to be just a few minutes from me in Stratford Ct. No matter what this reel does it can't justify the price. They take advantage of the lack of competition for completely sealed lightweight reels. It's def "solid" and you feel the quality as soon as you pick this up. Also, if this was a more mass produced product you would see the price drop dramatically. It's just a bit easier for me to pay top dollar for some of the high end shimano's because o

Best purchase I ever made was a van staal. I don't have a worry in the world using it! Best reel out there for surfcasters and even boaters. And don't knock it on its price. Especially if yo never felt one before.

Got the vs150 and St.Croix mojo 9ft combo from you guys a couple of weeks ago. Its been great! I caught a few nice stripers/blues/fluke. I really like how light the reel is and the action on the mojo, plenty of confidence casting out big plugs. For me the vs150 is a no brainer as there are very few predators off long island beaches that can spool this reel and I can always throw it on a 7 or 8 ft rod no problem.

Yeah they are some of the best reels for cobia fishing off of piers. the VS-300 and 250 work well for cobes. any size VS is very good on king fishing. my friend has all sizes of the VS series and uses them for different fish. he caught a 25lb Amber Jack on his 150. so yeah that and they are saltwater proof.

We have a 9' St Croix Triumph Surf Rod for $70 in the store. It's a salesman sample but is in great condition. That would work.

Yes, you need to use a mono backing to coat the spool.

@VIDEOZAL No. It's the quality and the detail. For an example, I'm sure you can tell the difference between a $50 microwave and one that costs $500. Look at the specs of the reel. The costs of the internal parts.

The 300 is discontinued. You can use mono on a van staal. Most people use braid because it casts better.

You just need to use your finger to put the line on the roller. It is very popular among surf guys.

That is a nice rod but if you are going to spend the money you should look at the St Croix Legend Surf Rod.

Either the 100 or the 150. The 150 is going to be a bit more versatile as it is significantly larger that the 100.

These reels do not have bails. You have to put the line on the roller with your hand.

I like the VS150 because it weighs less and still holds enough line. The VS100 is too small for a 9' rod.

if using braid, do you have to layer this with mono? I see some grooves on the spool and wondering if that would prevent slipping.

which model would be better for bass fishing? I usually prefer the lighter model spinning reel for bass in other makes. awesome looking reels. Their web site needs some improvement, they don't give much info.

I assume you mean striped bass form the beach. Depends on how long of a rod you'll be using.

@LIFalcons99 If you want a sealed reel like the VS then you have no cheaper options. If you are only surf fishing once in a while and you are mainly fishing from a boat then check out the Shimano Saragosa on our site. jandh.com.

Would this reel match ok witih a 12ft rod or is that too long/heavy a rod to match it with? I've always gone with smaller reels so I'm just really more curious about your thought on that.

It's too small. Won't line up right with the guides on that size rod.

So... what 'can' this reel do that my penn frc5000 can't. Besides the $640$ dent in my wallet and lack of drag. Sure, it's light-weight and sealed, but I maintenance all my reels myself. 700$ for a bass reel. Crazy.

Basically everything. The Fierce cannot compare the the VS. The VS is sealed, which you so quickly dismiss, It has twice the drag and you can fish with it underwater. It was designed to handle the extremes of fishing Montauk: the surf fishing capitol of the world. The magic of it is that you don't have to service it and it can take a beating.

I never did dismiss the engineered design nor the quality that went into the making of the reel. However I do doubt your claim of 'twice the drag' though. My penn frc5000 is rated at 20# of drag. I get about 18# of max drag with mine. I doubt that's a 40# reel. Also I don't know of anyone who fishes under water; always from a boat, pier or the bank. It's not a bad reel at all, I just don't see why it cost so much. My most expensive reel is a avet mx raptor and I still think a paid too much for that.

It's a reel that will never break in a season of use. Its got a drag that Penn only dreams of. Drop it on a sandy beach, and rinse it in salt water and fish away. With the Penn, your day is done. I have a VS150, and I can go on vacation knowing theres virtually no way I will need a backup. Lots of money! But peace of mind and bomb proof.

If you don't know anyone not fishing underwater I'm lead to believe you're a putz. If we want to change lures we throw the setup right in the sand and do what ever rigging needs to be done. We are chest deep in the ocean all summer long nailing blues with van staals and guess what we do when we're done... put them right back inside. These reels will be the last you ever buy. Yes it's easy to say a penn is good, but I've seen plenty of Penns break, need maintenance, parts replaced... so unless you fish with a VS you just wouldn't get it. Toughest reel out there and worth every damn penny.

well, the price is high, here in Brazil we have this one img.clasf.com.br/2014/09/19/2-molinetes-Paoli-malcolm-troco-20140919165733.jpg its the same thing, just less fancy, and not 100% sealed, and costs around 30 USD but after drowning it in saltwater all I do is wash it in freshwater and lub it, I have 3 of those and they still alive and kicking after 6 years of surf fishing they are very similar, I fell for this reel xD too bad its very expensive...

It's a fantastic reel that is used for extreme fishing. There are very few reels on the planet that can do what this reel does.

Why a joke? theres nothing like it. machines from solid bar stock aluminum. Fully sealed. titanium shaft. Steel gears. It simply will not break. I have 6 year old Van Staal pliers. 6 years of fishing wading with it submerged. No rust. No wear. Like day one. Even cut a 6/0 hook out of my body. Is a Les Paul a joke? A Rolex? Its one of the 2 best built reels on the planet. You either know or you don't. You don't. :)
