Thanks - using your video as a rough guide, I managed to combine two non-functioning motors into one that worked. The pillow-shaped lump in the brush holder on the first one would not pass electrons. Don't know what it's supposed to do, but I know what it doesn't do. Replaced it with the entire brush holder from another motor with a seized upper bearing and it works. Now, if only the PO hadn't installed an earlier model passenger door, without mount points for the late-model regulator and motor, this would be just a hard job, not a miserable one.

had a non-working window-motor very similar to yours in a mid-80's BMW, turned out it was the circuit-breaker that was kaput-this is a small,sealed black plastic thing right next to where the brushes are. Bypassing the CB by bridging its 2 terminals together with a length of wire got the motor working again,but be aware that the CB is there to cut the motor out when the window reaches the ends of its travel (i believe),so this feature is lost.

The thing you omitted to tell us is how to determine whether it is the switch or the motor (or both) that is defective.

You can hook the motor up directly to a battery. It doesn't matter which polarity, it will turn either way. If the motor doesn't turn by hand, don't bother, it is frozen and need to be taken apart and cleaned or replaced. If it turns easily by hand, use a car battery and some jumper wires to power the motor to see if it works. If it doesn't then the switch or wiring must be bad. The video wasn't intended to be a troubleshooting video.

Do you rebuild any window reg. motors? I have an 86 bmw (e30) and the motor looks similar.

I could try but I can't promise how it would turn out. I would check with Rock Auto and see if they have an R&R program.

Hello and thanks for your help on this! I am having a hard time getting the bottom brass bushing off.I tried soaking in gas,then tapping with small hammer. No joy. What is your technique?Thanks!

+Michelle Barnett I grab it with a vice and then turn it make a forth until it loosens and comes off.

Yes, the bottom brass bushing will sieze up. I carfully soaked the bearing in some Blasters, sprayed in a cup.scraping as much of the corrision around the brass bearing and shaft. Let is soak overight. Put 2 little small wood spacers between the table vise and armature shaft brass bushing tighten is down, not killer tight and slowly twist clockwise and countr clockwise. This should work.

Also, I had so much trouble trying to align the armature back into the housing into the hole of the brass bushing with magnets in place. The magnets kept pulling off center the shaft alignment. 1. Put armature back int brass bushing into housing without magnet in place. 2. Then slip magnets in place, 3. Put the clip magnet holding wires in upside down, I could not get it back in the original way. No room. It still will work. Remember the sequnce order of the various washer placement. If you ruin the thin gasket make one. But, remember, do not put bearings directly into vise. That could ruin the bearings and don't put the armature shaft directly on vise either to pull armature out of housing. Use wood spacers. Keep the shaft and bearing bushings protected. R &R Total time it too me was 10 hours. Door to door.

Azar jan I have never attempted to repair the regulator for the power windows. I usually just buy a new one as it has plastic parts that can break and become brittle with age.
