My buddies and I rented a Vanagon back in 1987 to go visit Omaha Beach, Caen Normandy and pay our respects to the men that fought on the beach that day. We were in the Air-Force back then assigned to Ramstein Air Base, West Germany. We rented the Vanagon from the AAFES rental car office. Our Vanagon was air-cooled. We had seven folks in the van, it was a lot of fun taking the Vanagon across western Germany and France. We also stopped in Paris for a few hours.

Tommie would love to tear into that motor ? Water buffaloes have forged CW cranks and forged rods . and never pound out the case . It's not because it is made from aluminium it;s because it has less of a wall . If you ever framed a wall the 2X4 can flex , but if you try to flex a 4 foot 2X4 not so much . On a type 1 it's the box shape that does it in .

The green tire cleaner at the car wash works good to clean the fiberglass , bring a 5 gal. bucket and fill it up .

Awesome episode guys! You are very lucky, I bought everyone of those parts GoWesty gave you and thats just the tip of the iceberg! I also painted mty top, and you are right Gary, They look amazing after there done! Im still working on my window ow chanel, I had to hand fab the complete bottom both inside and out, and both lower corners, finally have them in For 15, prep and paint will be next, then the dash goes back in. Thanks again, its so cool seeing you work on my sister van...Peace!

At Tractor Supply's they have some hardner that will make that paint last 3 times longer .

I used latex house paint on my 1981, as I recall the colour I picked was called "Wedding White". Surprisingly, it worked great, and lasted forever.

Great video guys, thanks. Please consider this idea. Make a comparison tally of what you paid for that westy, what you paid for parts, and how many man hours are invested, compared to what it would have been worth on the open market before the work, and how much the parts would have cost, full retail. Do it just so viewers can get a feel for what it really takes to restore an old VW.

@dirk jansen, they have diffrent kinds of boat lacker, but i used some on my westfalia top en its perfect en easy to clean. Think about it boats are in thenwater and the algy and salt have to come of really easy:)

@@elmarruben Oh, i see. Thank you so much for the impulse! I will look for it. Here in cologne we've got a great shop that deals with all the stuff concerning boats as well. And it seems only to clear: Paint, that is good for boats cannot be wrong for hardtops in westies as far as rain and cleaning is concerned...😊. This will be our next autumnproject, i guess...👍
