Ever wonder if in dash AC is possible in a Vanagon? Yes it is and it works great as well.
Update 2019!
After much interest in this system, I have set up a barebones version of it that you can purchase on our site. This barebones version just gives you the bare essentials to install the kit. It isn't a complete kit but you get the dash unit, drier, trianary pressure switch and controls that you will need. You will still need a condenser (you can use your old one if it is still good), a compressor (again you can use your old one if it is good), and all new hoses (these can be fabricated once you see what you are going to need). I can do a kit for $1395 plus shipping. It doesn't include compressor or condenser. You can reuse your old stuff but that would void the warranty. With a new compressor and condenser it would be $1885. The kit also replaces your dash blower fan and front heater core so if you are already doing that work you can put that money toward this kit instead.

Just FYI, my labor to do the install would be around 15 hours at $125 per hour. The only way I would considering doing one here at my shop is if you could drop it off for a couple of weeks. So you are looking at around $4k installed (four thousand dollars for those of you who want to pretend not to know what 4k means in 2017) :-)

Van-Again it's hot like ...probably going to get it I a few years (when it's on the road again )but won't bother you more until I'm 100/100 sure what I'm going to do ,bye

Van-Again you should be able to modify it so it looks 100/100 OE (no extra vents and using the OE controls )you can do an adaptor for the ac vents that mounts on the hose of the OE vents and you can convert the OE controls to work with resistors so it will look like the same ,but this is probably the choice of the customer

It has foot well heating and AC if you put the knob in that position

I assume it is a vintage air kit. How much room is there for the radio. Looks a if it does not really fit properly?

It is tight. It depends on how deep the radio is. If you don't need a CD player then you can get really shallow radios and MP3 player with Bluetooth to make it a non issue.

You can use the kit with the stock engine.

how do you keep cool when you are sleeping and parked do you have to idle the truck or can you buy a window unit and hook it up to shore power I know they have a power plug on the side

You would have to use a portable AC unit or window unit plugged into 110v.

@@VanAgain it must have been very unpleasant camping back in the day without ACit can be over a hundred and twenty degrees in a vehicle when it's only 80 outside

@@brettduffy1992 You park in the shade and use 12 volt fans, open all of the windows, it isn't bad in there. But most folks aren't in the van much during the day either. At night it is cooler.

@@brettduffy1992 If you can plug into 110v you can buy a portable AC unit that you can take in and out of the van, and that will freeze you out. How does the lower plastic floor heater vent attach with the old air box removed?

Good question! I fabricated a small bracket on each side and connected it to the dash underneath. I used a couple of screws and you really don't notice it.

It has floor vents that just point down from the body of the unit so nothing is needed. It will just blow down at your feet when it is in that position.

Could this work on an Aircooled application?

Yes, but you will need to source the air cooled AC setup up. This includes a special mount, a relay pulley, two belts, and a spacer with additional pulley behind the fan pulley on the crankshaft. So unless you have AC on your Aircooled already you might have lots of problems sourcing all of this stuff.
