Vancouver city council is coming up with a new vision for Gastown with the potential for no vehicles along its main street. But as Justin McElroy reports, it's not the first time the city has floated the idea.

Good on Vancouver. These dense, compact areas of city centres should be car-free or at the very least car-lite. It makes existing in the city more pleasant when you don't have to constantly hear tire and engine noise.

Fantastic idea it was never designed with cars in the first place, I would encourage patio’s, improve foottraffic, and overall make it more pleasant. Other places who have done this have only seen benefits, let do it!

Why do we even allow cars down there in the first place? It's the perfect pedestrian mall.

No literally what’s the point all those cars driving through that area it’s so congested and small + there’s many cafes and attractions that people walk to anyways. If you drive there that’s practically your fault, you can still have loading and emergency vehicles use pedestrian streets

Surprised that it is only 10 million. The amount of brick work and reworking of the street will be massive. I hope that there is a vision to greatly expand patio seating, especially in the main square.
@rockyjohnson9243

honestly its only 3 blocks or so. Not really a big deal to re-route traffic. They should keep the brick road for the entire closed off area.

Awkward is the way to put it. Absolutely no need to have cars on Water St it could be a brilliant pedestrianised retail street with more events, patios and spaces for people.

Gastown, Granville Island, handful of other spots -- all deserve to be pedestrian-only, ideally, at all times, but if not possible, then at least on the weekends! Also, gotta take the crazies off the streets. Metro Vancouver is wasting A LOT of tourism potential and appeal due to indecision.

I don’t mind this. It should be great for the community. If they keep making car free areas downtown that’s great but they need to improve the capability for people to get through the city so they can travel north/south unrestricted. I hate driving through Vancouver to get to north van and back is horrendous. Better infrastructure and design also needs to go into public transit to keep the city moving. We are so far behind as a city and country compared to most 1st world countries in this area.

It will be the ONLY way to get me back to Gastown (and spend money on local businesses there). I've driven there several years ago; traffic was a nightmare--never again (not even by bicycle). Been waiting for it to be bike/walk/transit friendly ever since.
