Brian. Same. I’ve owned two construction companies and have never heard of this. A simple wood chip does the same thing.
@chaosmasker9858
@chaosmasker9858 4 жыл бұрын
I think a more appropriate title would be why a handyman should carry golf Tee's. A carpenter is most of the time building new. Not repairing. You are not going to find any new construction Carpenters with golf tees in their tool box. Now as a repair carpenter/handyman there are numerous reasons to use golf tees. Tho a simple splint of wood wittled down to size works just as well. PS. Another great use of a splint is if a screw has stripped out the hole it's in from a lot of movement over time. Just splint the stripped out hole and drive in a new screw.

Rub some of the lead of your pencil on the end of the striker, close the door, activate the handle a couple times, and it will leave a mark exactly where the plate needs to be. Just do it right the first time. I've been a nail banger for 40 years and never heard of using golf tees. You always have some piece of wood around, so peel off a slice and use that if you need to.

@@Laptopdog78 Oh so sorry if you took my comment the wrong way, but I was trying to pass along a little information about the initial installation of hardware. when your in the middle of nowhere and find a nail in your tire , A golf tee can be your best friend then as well. I had a little gasket sealer in the trunk too so that helped seal it till I got home . I drove about 80 miles back home that night on a golf tee LOL . it held up the whole next day also but come Monday morning it was off to get it patch , I figured i'd pressed my luck enough . the look on the guys face when he pulled a golf tee out of my tire was priceless ! once he stopped laughing he looked at me with this serious look and said well that's it , i'm adding a bag wood golf tees to the tool kit in the trunk of my car today . he didn't even charge me for the patch , he said the story behind it all was payment enough.

Also wooden matches for smaller holes. My main use of tees and wooden matches was always as a hole filler and wedge when a screw hole got sloppy and the application required reusing the same screw. Good content!

I'm glad you posted this because I literally had this issue with a blown out hole. MDF door. Going to try.

Don't overdrive the tee. It'll mush out the MDF. Put a little dab of glue in the hole, slightly wet the tee and tap it in until it just fits. Then, take a break. Come back in 20 minutes or so, hit the tee with a punch to eliminate bit drift when drilling the new hole and you'll be golden. Bonus, the tee will hold that screw 1,000 times better than MDF!

Razor knife and a scrap of oak works very nice. Also a burr bit in drill will open the strke plate a little. Unfortunately my house likes to move around seasonally so I get to practice this.

I'll get some tees, just raid the local golf club! . . . However, I think that I'd use a spur bit for the new hole. Easier to hit the mark. Also, it was nice to see you working on the type of home that I usually get . . . lotsa coats of paint.

Or when you first install the striker only put 2 screws in diagonal to each other so that if you need to move it you still have 2 holes that aren't drilled?
@keithklassen5320
@keithklassen5320 4 жыл бұрын
For sure, but then the holes you did screw wont hold as tight if you need to move.
@goochball5
@goochball5 4 жыл бұрын
@@keithklassen5320 doesn't matter... you have 2 screws holding super tight and 2 holding pretty tight. Its all a striker needs

Bbq skewers work really well. Toothpicks, match sticks, and a shim shaving are other good options. Never seen a golf tee used before.

In Taiwan, we use similar method but with different material. We use disposable bamboo chopsticks. Why these? Every bento (lunch box) comes with these chopsticks and even if you don't buy bento, they can be found at any convenient store in Tw.

Match sticks work very well too and you dont need to drill a larger hole to do that trick. I had a bunch of new hardware for cabinets and every new one was slightly off from the old ones so the holes didn't match up. I would break a match stick off in each hole and drill to the inside or outside of that new wood and it worked every time, even if it's off by just a little.

years back carpenters an masons would use tree branches / small wet sticks to hang fasteners into brick structures....for example hanging working shutters on a home...they would drill into the mortar ..hammer a stick into the hole and then hammer in the clip or hanger ..as the wood dried it would act as a adhesive...
