Join us for a profound journey at the Mahone Cemetery, where we dedicate several days-and a month's worth of efforts-to restore and honor this historic site. In this video, we focus particularly on the grave of Manson Hamler, born in 1846, who most likely began his life in slavery. His grave, marked by the most impressive headstone in the cemetery, receives special attention as we carefully clean and preserve his memory.
The cleanup process involves clearing away cut trees and tidying the surroundings, a task made lighter by wonderful volunteers. A big thank you to Joy, Paula from the Murder Most Southern KZfaq channel, and her daughter for their invaluable help and companionship throughout this project.

Robert: (The following is not Judgemental nor Condescending, it is Discernment and a Request) Please, (you guys/gals in your group), make a commitment to STOP Bare-hand removal of leaves. The Scorpion demonstrated why, and (there are other toxic venomous crawlers and snakes that lay in the leaves and debris). Find gloves that are used to protect hands from such injury and invest the money/costs to be safe in your Explorations and Works. "You can't afford not to do this.". All the stones you cleaned are looking so great. Loved seeing the update on everyone there. It's looking so good at the moment but like you say, very nervous about how quickly the cemetery is going to get overgrown. I'm so glad you've taken it on to document it in it's current state and do the cleanup. The significance of it is so easily overlooked but it is such important work. My mom always had me and my sister at cemetary where her mother was at rest. A large older cemetary. We would visit grandmother almost weekly then have a walkabout through the headstones reading epitaphs and names.Im sure of the peace it brought mom because its how i find peace in difficult times. My is buried in my community cemetary that dates to early 1800s. I can ride my mower over from my home and enjoy being at peace with her. I love watching your videos and im quite sure the residents of those places smile upon you brother.🙂

Where are your gloves? You need to protect yourself from bacteria, fungus, and animal droppings. You care so much about preserving our history . That's a wonderful thing. ❤ I like the cleanup of the area as well as cleaning and fixing the headstones. 😊

So sorry to hear you had Covid. I went almost 3yrs before I had it last Nov. Not too bad just like the flu and out sick about 2wks. I went on Ancestry and shows Marriage record of Manson Hamler and Lizzie Dozier Aug 17 1870. She was 24 yrs old. They show 2 kids in I think 1870 or so census 2yr James and 3mo Mansen. Shows Lizzie as Farm Laborer.

Thank you and all who clean and preserve this and other cemeteries. I have learned so much from watching your channel that I have been inspired. Last year I started with my Grandfather's WW1 headstone in Newton Valley, Vernon County, Wisconsin and it has grown from there. I have worked on many other family members headstones and other veterans' graves. In the process I've learned lots about my family and other's history's and connections. From there as a volunteer for "findagrave" I have documented and fulfilled requests in many other cemeteries in the county and beyond. I have found love and beauty I never expected, I've felt honor, and been humbled and privileged to travel and document many historic cemeteries.
