What happened to Rob Van Winkle's career? One song and it was a wrap (pun intended). Van Winkle was an interloper. He got lucky with Ice, Ice Baby and benefited from the stupidity of whites, who ran out and bought his garbage album. Van Winkle's time at the top of the Billboard charts was the Hip Hop equivalent of the Iran hostage crisis. Big shout out to Arsenio for saying that the emperor had no clothes.
@davidsamuels9557 Жыл бұрын
@@kevinwalsh4652 Never underestimate the stupidity of the American consumer. Rob Van Winkle's album was trash. After Ice Ice Baby ran its course, his rap career was over. If Van Winkle was so dope there would have been more hits off of To The Extreme, but there were not. Van Winkle never again had anything resembling a hit song. You can spout all the financial figures that you want. Just because white people are still dumb enough to buy his music, doesn't mean that it's any good.

When he lost fame and he was on some of the celebrity reality shows like Surreal Life, he was very down on himself and the whole Ice character. He hated his legacy. I think those shows encouraged a LOT of past fans and people close to him to tell him to embrace what he did, because he was a "moment" in a lot of people lives at that time in history. Ice Ice Baby was a silly fun song, and it was NOTHING to be ashamed of. You can play it today and remember those days and how much fun you were having hearing it. So many kids grew up on Turtle Rap and, again, it was a silly fun song but it meant a lot to kids at that time. You can see today that he is proud of everything he did. He might be embarrassed by those goofy ass clothes, but music that becomes big like that is timeless.

Ice took a lot of heat back in 1990/1991 from many hip hop artists from KRS-One and Ice Cube to 3rd Bass to A Tribe Called Quest. They saw him (and Hammer) as sellouts because they commercialized hip hop music and made mad bread doing it. By finding new audiences. But one thing they won't acknowledge is that VI and Hammer brought in masses of fans who in turn bought Boogie Down Productions/KRS-One and Ice Cube records and embraced hip hop.
