THE POTTING BENCH

THE POTTING BENCH

3 жыл бұрын

Vanilla bean orchid is the plant in which the natural flavor/essence vanilla is extracted from. This is a very important crop and so I have to divide this into 2 parts. In this particular part the basics of vanilla are explained laying grounds for part 2 which will be more technical, this part includes propagation of vanilla and some description on how to grow it. In part 2 it will be the most technical in pollination and getting the vanilla beans which the flavor is extracted from...you are way behind in getting that ice cream...so enjoy this part 1 first.

Very useful information! I bought my first Vanilla orchid. I put sphagnum moss around the trellis and mist them daily to give the orchid more humid conditions. The pot is on a heating mat. I hope it will flower one day!

Thank you ! I found you most Informative. You did wonderful job coordinating what you saw with explanations. I have grown my vanilla over 10 years. It has been my baby monster but never produced flowers so I haven’t had any blooms to attempt pollination and harvesting bean. This week I saw what looks like blooms coming I counted 6 today coming on! I’m so excited but nervous that something will happen. I live in south Florida until Christmas they had an open shade house with 55%shade film roof. Tornado got it. They are inside now I have shaded porch that I put them on to water them. Our temperature will be in the 50 degree nights and 70 days. Should I keep them inside this winter and make them comfortable or put them out and bring them in as needed ? The vines are probably 20-30 ft long or possibly 40 ft I measured them in 2015 at 16 ft and 20 ft They are contained with a wire hardware cloth tube in a 3 gallon pot inside a 5 gallon buckets. There are 2 only one is blooming the other I cut one branch into cuttings and sold them . I used cinnamon on the one cut I made on the vine but it’s not happy. I feel I should cut the whole plant into large cuttings and expand my number of plants that it may survive and thrive better than this state it is in now. Your experience and advice would be greatly appreciated

@@THEPOTTINGBENCH No thank you for the help I've realized my vanilla plant isn't doing so great I think adding some more humidity and as you suggested adding fertilizer is a great way of boosting the health of the plant great stuff have you thought about adding melipona bees to cut down on labour plus you get valuable honey too it's a win win situation

This is excellent video. How long we need to keep the vine in pot. Do we need to change small pot to bigger and need more soil as well. Or the vine will be there for life long. Thank you.
@THEPOTTINGBENCH
@THEPOTTINGBENCH 3 жыл бұрын
After the new growth starts you can transplant the vine yo your desired area,but if you so choose you can leave the plant in the same pot as it is an epiphytic vine so the roots on the ground or pot do really matter much
@chetakbhandge3651
@chetakbhandge3651 3 жыл бұрын
@@THEPOTTINGBENCH thank you so much. "Epiphytes" tells everything about this plant and hence i understood now, the pot size doesnot matter. I will wait for your next videos. Namaskar from India 😊

@THEPOTTINGBENCH
@THEPOTTINGBENCH 2 жыл бұрын
The first one is ‘potting soil’ and then orchid bark mixed in. Remember the plant is an epiphytic vine so you really need soil when anchoring it otherwise it can grow soil less

Hello … the seeds from the pods at the supermarket may not be viable. The best and most effective and sure way of growing vanilla orchid is through cuttings from an active growing vine.
