Atli has chosen full-time van life as a long term housing solution because it helps her spend less money, work a flexible job, travel when she wants, and have her own mobile home in the city.
You can follow Atli on Instagram at:
/ t.rex_van
She also helped start a monthly van life meet-up in Vancouver (in the summer months) at the Spanish Banks on the first Sunday of the month. To find out more, you can email her at:
vancityvanlife@gmail.com
Her Ford Transit camper van conversion is gorgeous and she did most of the work with her Dad. They installed a Suburban furnace, insulation, and roof vents to control the temperature inside the van.
There's tons of storage under the platform bed, in the closet, and in the kitchen.
One of the best things about Atli's van is that she prioritized keeping it stealthy so that she can park pretty much anywhere without being disturbed. Because no one knows she's in there, she doesn't have any issues with safety as a solo female van dweller.
There are no windows in the van, but there is a skylight above her bed. They even installed a bulkhead between the cab and cargo areas, and painted it grey so that it really looks like a work van from the outside.
There's no bathroom (toilet or shower) in the van because Atli can use the facilities at work, and at the gym whenever she needs to.
Another great thing about living in a van is that Atli can escape the winter for a couple of months each year and she usually tries to make it down to the Rubber Tramp Rendezvous in Quartzsite Arizona. Here's a link if you want to check it out:

THE BIGGEST VAN LIFE DILEMMA: Toilet or No Toilet? Atli has the advantage of bathroom and shower facilities at work, and at her gym. What do you/would you do?

Yeah, I wouldn't try installing a toilet, maybe a lidded ceramic pot with wood chips, sand and baking powder. Those things take care of odor and absorb moisture. You could store it in the cabin where the air is cooler (at least in winter).

My van looks exactly like the one on her flyer and came with a toilet installed (91 Ford E-350 conversion). I absolutely love it but in the future will switch it out for a composting one so I don't have to deal with tanks.

Problem is, as more people do it, the communities will take more action against van dwelling.
@johnwang9914
@johnwang9914 4 жыл бұрын
@Charles Colee Yes, but that assumes altruism and empathy. The community's would not benefit from taxes of nomadic dwellers so I don't see them being particularly concerned about providing safe spaces. They would be more prone to restricting sleeping in vehicles and overnight parking while building for rent RV parks in less desirable areas. Even the Walmart overnight parking was a top down mandate from the founder himself and now that he's deceased, many of the franchise holders are now banning overnight parking though a few will allow for one night stays if you call ahead. You can't expect people to do something nice for free, they'll just call van dwellers squatters and the homeless and ask for the "shanty towns" to be demolished as eyesores. It only hasn't been too much of a problem till now because not a lot of people were doing it but as more people can dwell particularly for economic reasons, the more negative the reaction. Now, progressive governments might avoid this conflict with some meaningful regulations but without a profit motivation, I don't see a politician gaining a lot of support for such actions. The problem will also get worse with autonomous vehicles if such vehicles are allowed to drive unoccupied to their parking spot whether at home or in a nearby commercial facility. The need for street parking and rest stops will drop with autonomous vehicles and really rest stops only existed because the interstate was a massive socialist program which invested on employment and facilitating commerce, it is only because the rest stops were planned as a public service that they exist at all.
@johnwang9914
@johnwang9914 4 жыл бұрын
@Charles Colee All of which costs money and as the nomadic dwellers do not pay property taxes, I do not see communities encouraging them except through rental RV lots as the number of nomadic dwellers increase.

No bills? 1. Van payment (She says it's kind of like a mortgage) 2. Gasoline/petrol to run the van and interior electricity 3. Fuel for the stovetop 4. Water (unless she just fills up from a faucet at the park) 5. Auto insurance (Do they charge more since she's living in the vehicle? Can you even get a home owner's policy on a van?) 6. Part-time job = no employer provided health insurance, so she either buys her own or pays cash for medical expenses. (Says she lives in Vancouver, but not whether that's BC or WA) 7. Gym membership so she has a regular place to shower and do yoga. 8. Did she pay for all the materials in the van, or did her dad? Did she have ready funds or did she charge it all and is paying it off over time?* Sounds like she has a lot of the same bills traditional dwellers have, they just might be somewhat less. Edit: 9. Maintenance on the vehicle AND the dwelling. 10. How does she get internet access (because that's a necessity, esp. for planning those trips she mentions)? Does she just use her mobile plan or does she use her employer's/gym's wifi? The former might be more expensive while the latter is probably more of a hassle and may violate the policies of those places. *Also, if her dad paid for it, did he ask her to pay him back because she's no longer a minor and can pay her own way (a lot of parents take this approach)? Or did he say, this is in lieu of the money I'd spend on your wedding or a down payment on a house (a lot of parents take that approach)? As another commenter said, the value of the labor her dad put into that van was worth approx. $20,000. If she'd had to pay that, or barter for it, she'd still be paying that off too, along with her other bills. Nothing is as easy as social media makes it seem.

I came across this clip some time ago, and saved it to my 'Van life' folder for inspiration. I have now put the deposit down on a 2001 Ford Transit 350L which is a mid roof. Thank you Atli for your story and amazing van. Well done Dad!! I will be using many of your ideas for my own home on wheels. Greetings from New Zealand. 😃

It must be a mass transit kind of thing, I am a retired mass transit employee. I had to drive for 3 years while waiting to get into the garage as a diesel mechanic. I was enamored by just how much room was in a bus and when I retired purchase one of the buses at auction that I use to drive on routes. So, I am building a much larger version of a van. lol. I love the table that slides under the bed. Wont work in my setup but an excellent option in a smaller setup. Hope to see this young lady's van at the first RTR I go to, not this year though. :(
