And so, I thought, why not have an episode about it? After all, that first day of school is a pretty big deal, not just for the students, but also for professional educators like you.
That is why I’ve created a free printable lesson plan to go along with the episode! I’ll also explain how to use it, so make sure you watch the whole thing!

Helpful Tip: Set up Block, Art, Library Centers before school begins, then cover 3/4 of the shelves with butcher paper. Reveal more supplies/activities as the first weeks go by. This way you aren't storing materials. I have done this for years in preschool and kindergarten. Surprisingly, the kids rarely notice the hidden shelves!

I am new Early Childhood Special Education teacher. My students started late last week. I thought I was wrong for allowing them to wander and explore the classroom space for the first two days. I wanted them to get comfortable being in the classroom and around myself and the paraprofessionals especially since they mostly cried on the first day. Tomorrow starts the first full week of school for us. I wanted to begin working on procedures and routines. I feel like in the first two days we were able to pick up on some of their habits and what some actions mean. I'm very excited at this opportunity to learn from your lesson plan as I was trying to figure out how I was going to teach them about the classroom and centers in small pieces because currently they have not shown any interest too much in the centers but they love the sing and dance videos. Thank you.

Thank you! I owned and operated a home preschool business for 15 years and continue to “read aloud” via this youtube channel. I'm a brand new teacher starting PS in a Reggio school. I've been so worried and stressed in the build up to the start of this year as it's hard to know exactly where to start. Ok so what to do when your district no longer thinks a certified teacher is needed in Pk??? Loosing my mind trying to teach moms off the street the basics with full inclusion at 18 with 8-10 being special needs Pk students… in for profit program with a requirement of using Golds strategies. Let’s say kids are far from ready for kinder…. Trying to provide visuals for routines simple activities and basic ADL’s. Thank you for the simple ideas to slow down the class and work on routines and transitions. I love the first 10 day lessons. This might be what I support these paras to do all year.

Covid has changed everything so much! We aren’t allowed to have dress up out, only things that are safe to bleach at the end of the day, no sensory table, etc... Plus we do ECERS, which say that we should have a lot of stuff available at all times for each student. For my autistic and ADHD children a lot of stuff is overwhelming and over stimulating to them. Plus, my last day of the school year was Friday (we go all year). 😁. Thanks for the great tips!

what kind of education is required to become a preschool teacher?

It depends on where you live and which type of preschool you teach. I taught Pre-K in a public school, so I needed to have the same teaching degree/certification as all K-12 teachers, plus ESL and early childhood certification. If you wanted to teach in a private preschool the requirements may differ by school. For childcare programs it depends by state, but typically no degree is required.

I teach Art. I will have PK and maybe 3 year olds. What would you teach and how? Do not have a clue. Frustrated. No TEKS or how to teach that age.

Not sure about art specifically, but there are TEKS (Guidelines) for PK4 and TX guidelines for 3 year-olds as well: tea.texas.gov/academics/early-childhood-education/texas-prekindergarten-guidelines (pre-k) and childrenslearninginstitute.org/resources/itelg/ (for infants- 3 years of age) If you go with process art/experimentation and exposure for 3 and 4 year-olds you can't go wrong.
