Those roofing nails did look really, really short. However, the proper way to handle a roofing nail isn't between your index finger and your thumb. Hold your hand, palm up. Then push the nail between your index and middle finger so that the nail head is flush with your fingers (but not between your knuckle joints or the next step could hurt like hell). Give the nail a strong tap, this will set the nail point into the substrate. The fleshy side of your hand will flex and depress down when you tap the nail. Then, remove your hand (the nail will remain standing) and drive the nail in with a single hit. Every roofing nail will then take you two swings of the hammer, tap to set, remove hand, drive the nail. This will save you hours.

As a carpenter, watching you try to use those nails both hurt and amazed me. That lil nailing jig was a delight to see you come up with on the fly using what's available. That door looks poorly hung though if it's binding like that, but without being there I can't say if it's poor prefab or lack of experience hanging doors like me when I did barn doors.

I agree with all the other people who say that having a child grow up watching his family do things for themselves is of far greater value than you will ever know. If I were to advise anyone going down this road of building a "playhouse" for a child, my advice would be to consider what happens when your child out-grows this structure. This will happen before you know it. Will it be taken down? Will it be used for storage? A home office or shop? I built mine with the knowledge that it might one day be turned into a bedroom or a home office (both have since happened) so I built it to last - concrete pad, standing seem metal roof, full size doors, windows and skylights. If you didn't want to go that route but were after longevity, I would have considered buying a ToughShed type structure--which actually has metal (I beam style) skids for a foundation instead of the tiny wood "sleepers" that this one has that will rot out quickly -- and modify that to your needs. I'm sure Van will find something creative to do with this. Maybe at some point jack it up and build a structure to go underneath it to make it full sized? His mind seems a fertile environment.

I had a water leak coming from the front wall of my brownstone into the basement. I thought I’d fix it myself with leak stop cement. Then I decided to hire my neighbor, a cement and brownstone expert. He found several problems and fixed them all. I would have only fixed the one crack I could see. Money well spent, no more water leaks. - Eric.

3:20 I had that problem with small nails when I built my shed (took a long hard look at the "ready"-made ones and ended up drawing one instead. Best decision ever, judging by your experience). My solution was to hold those tiny buggers with a tweezer. It worked so well that I ended up holding bigger nails that way too, but I've since learned that old carpenters will sometimes take a piece of thin plywood or one of those sticks you get when you buy a bucket of paint, saw a slit in the middle and hit the nail far enough in that it holds. Similar to your solution

As a self employed person I have had this discussion with myself time and time again. I sit and do the math relating to taking my car to the mechanics to have maintenance done. I can fix most things on my cars and have had the engines torn down and rebuilt and even changed out for different engines. But now I find myself struggling to do the work myself when I know my self worth as a financial number has been increasing and staying home to fix my car could end up costing me money. Especially if you figure out the formula to factor in value of free time. I still don’t have an answer to this question. And in some ways I am payed back in a sense accomplishment after fixing my car. That has to factor in there somewhere. But how do you put a price on that. Thanks for making your videos. They are massively inspiring and though provoking.

There are missing components to the equation 1 - the value of your daughter knowing you built the shed 2 - no way the maintenance guy takes his time and does it well for $500, he would have rushed it to balance getting to his other under quoted jobs 3 - your own satisfaction looking up at the shed every morning knowing you figured it out.

Nearly 40 years ago, my neighbors and I grabbed some nails and built a crazy shack up in the woods. Two levels, with an observation deck on top. Some rival kids that lived about a mile down the road tore it down, so the oldest in our gang drove the 4 wheeler down the road to find them, while two of us trailed behind on mini-bikes. We arrived just in time to watch him chase a kid down and run directly over him with a Honda Fourtrax. "Thump-thump". I remember thinking he was surely dead, but he hopped right back up and ran the opposite direction. I saw him on the schoolbus the next day. Not a scratch. I'm friends with him on Facebook.

Amateur tip with holding short nails with your fingers: Hold the nail between your pointer and ring finger but with your fingernails facing down. So essentially you’re holding the nail with the side of your fingers, not the pads. Don’t use your pointer and thumb. Thumb is too big.

I think the secret to this video is that Van would do it himself the right way in any case, and the "hours it took me to save money" is just a humble excuse to make it look more accessible for us little people. Anyway...at the risk of being sent to r/whoosh : I'm a maintenance employee who deals with contractors, and we see it all the time onsite: the playset is yours so the little things are not overlooked when you personally handle them...peace of mind saved it's tough to put a price on. The money saved is kind of a joke, sometimes.

Choose your battle. Things you do, you MAY well do better than someone you hire. You care, you may actually to it better than they would. When you look at it you know you did it. Pride. Some things I cannot do. I cannot plumb. I do not like to clean toilets, I don't know cement/concrete. I will however struggle for days to make a really good fence or use better fasteners on a piece of Ikea furniture. I will make mistakes (hero's journey). There's also a longer story here. What if you are stuck in the woods and simply have to do something? The experience of having done it once may be valuable. Things I know I can do, and can do well, I do. I choose my battle.
