@Maulinator694 жыл бұрын
He's bang on about prices lol... I have one of the last made on a G plate. A white Sapphire RS Cosworth 4x4, black leather interior... I've had it since 1993 when I paid £5700 for a 22000 mile model. It was a treat to myself when I received a promotion in the RAF. I've spent a lot of years living overseas since then so the car has spent much time in storage... I just couldn't bring myself to sell it. I'm 50 now, semi retired and have a bit of a car collection going in the double digits. The Cossie had a bit of a restoration 3 years ago but has never needed any major body work as I had the paint protected and it ziebarted from the moment I bought it so she's near enough mint. It's on 52000 miles and with a few basic mods is knocking out about 260-70 bhp. Drives just as well as it did the day I bought it and STILL turns heads when I take it out regularly during the summer months. Recently a guy approached me whilst I was out in it and told me he'd wanted one for ages and was prepared to pay me 40k if I'd sell it to him. I declined but they really do sell for silly money these days. I just wish I still had my first ever car, a 9 year old V reg Escort MK 2 RS Harrier in white... sigh :/

Glad to hear your experience was better than mine! Funnily enough, I knew someone who had an Escort Cosworth back in the 90's and took it to a Ford dealer for a cambelt change and a couple of months later it snapped. He had a nightmare of a time getting compensation out of the fuckers and getting them to pay for repairs. On further investigation by a specialist it appeared that the oil filter had never been changed in 3 years of Ford main dealer servicing either...!

When I was a kid the landlord of a local pub had an Escort Cosworth. He bought an electric fence type kit and electrified his garage door so nobody would steal it. He had to remove it in the end because there were dead foxes and cats laid outside of it on a regular basis. Didn't seem that funny as a kid but when I tell people today they are falling off their chairs.

My biggest bloody gripe of the car was the stupid archaic cable clutch, hated it. Try drilling out 4 (of the 16!) sheared exhaust manifold studs with the head in situ...an impossible job without specialist right angle aircraft air drill equipment. Or how about replacing the heater water hose at the back of the head that goes through the bulkhead to the heater core...another nightmare! Like I said, I loved the car when it went, but I guess i was chasing 15 years of botched problems.

Amazing how things have progressed, 0-60mpg in 6.5 secs and 140mph isn't especially fast these days.

Most new cars use a few smoke and mirrors in order to improve those numbers - a clever four wheel drive system and a fast 8 speed transmission more than make up for the extra weight. The thing is, with the electric steering etc…these new cars are quite soulless in comparison. I would take a tuned sapphire Cosworth over a new M3 or AMG any day. I was taken out in a new CLA 45 AMG S not so long ago….it was stupidly fast, but I wasn’t that impressed.

The magenta cossie for sale at the end of the video is the only one still alive. It’s taxed and MOT’d still 🙂

Had two sapphires cossies new ,they were fast as fuck ,but have disagree with what’s said in the video my two new ones had new turbos fitted under warranty and the later 4x4 one I had had to have a new head fitted as it over heated.

The cars would be rusted away, but the oil patch where they leaked will be there for decades to come.

On my older cars back in the day, I used to remove the rotor arm from the distributor.

Loved my Sierra Cosworth! But I did drop a few grand getting it spec'd out by the Ford Rally boys.. It wasn't your average cossie! Crashed it a couple times like a fucking penis lol Head fucked boy with his toy and more money than sense. Thank fuck for the professional roll bar and bucket seats! Managed to get 170mph out of it before I got rid (Bloody scary at those speeds) And this was 1998. Got an Evo 8 after that. That thing was a beast! Managed 175mph off the bat no mods and felt safer too (If you can call nearly 180 safe lol)

Best kept secret? Not in Australia. Few cars could compete with them until the point that touring car races became a Sierra series. The public was outraged that V8s couldnt compete with them which made the touring car series organisers ban anything that wasnt a V8. They effectively caused the end of mainstream touring car races in Australia.
@sahhull5 жыл бұрын
of course 30 years later the V8's will still be running and the asthmatic 4 cylinder lawn mower engines will have rattled them selves to pieces.. Tho the cossie oil leak patches on the owners driveways will be there dor decades to come.

Thats actually the standard Australian response but unreliable cars dont win races. Almost 30 years later people are still having trouble accepting that the Aussie family V8 sedan is fat, slow and makes a crappy race car. Though if you cant beat it ban it, right. Organisers of Bathurst have been cheating to keep Aussie built cars at the top since the 60s. To the point where now, we have cars with generic chassis and different manufacturers badges on the front rather than actual touring cars.
