Even though we were both pretty ill, we took our first overnight train in India! An AC-2 train took us from Varanasi to Agra. It left 5 hours late, and took 18 hours instead of 12… We were not prepared!

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left January 10, 2016. We started this KZfaq channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before Nate turns 30 (which is March 20, 2019)! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

You two prove once again why you are the best. Traveling in such rough conditions when you're feeling great must be challenging enough... but when you're sick, wow, I can't even imagine. I barely want to leave my couch when I'm sick. You guys are an inspiration on so many levels. Lots of love to you always. ❤

@@OpiumBride She's excited like any other grateful human would be. She gets to travel the world with someone she loves. It's not bad to act hyper or excited when you are doing something lovely and adventurous. If you get to go all around the world, would you just act like it's not a big deal? Showing emotions won't hurt you, and that's exactly what KARA is doing. I think Kara and Nate are perfect for each other.

If I ever visit India I’m going to visit the comment section of any India travel video, because there’s a lot of really good (and repeating) advice from Indian locals. So far, the common advice seems to be: travel South India coz North is overrated; that there exists a much more modern and cleaner India to visit; don’t trust google to plan your Indian trip; that there are better trains in India. If i were to trust all Indian travel vlogs, I would assume India was a dirty, dusty, sad country but going by comments locals insist it’s not and that tourists are travelling to the wrong places so I still really really want to visit. Thanks for the update Kara & Nate. It’s been sad to see you guys feeling under the weather but you’ve managed to remain mostly positive in spite of this. Great work!

Stallen North India is not overrated. In fact no region is overrated in India. It just depends on your preferences. Starting from the top we have Jammu and Kashmir which is a very beautiful place to visit. It's Kashmir Valley is often referred to as 'Paradise on earth'. Then we have Himachal Pradesh which again is famous for its hills, trekking, camping and various sport activities apart from providing natural beauty. Then there is Punjab which is known for its famous Golden Temple.Then we have Rajasthan, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh which are famous for it's forts and various archeological monuments. Gujarat a state in western part of India has some famous temples and the great Rann of Kutch. Then comes Varanasi, Haridwar, Rishikesh and Mathura which have importance amongst Hindus as places of worship. Then we have whole of north-east region which is completely amazing and serene like no other region of the country. There we have buddhist monastries, beautiful and clean locations and waterfalls that would leave you awestruck. Then there is Goa which is known for its relaxing beaches. In Maharashtra you can visit Ajanta and Ellora caves, Elephanta caves, Gateway of India and various other monuments. Apart from that there is Kailashnath temple which is an architectural wonder as it was carved out from a single rock that too starting from top to bottom. Then we have south India which is a nature's marvel. There you can find some of the oldest and magnificent temples along with a lot of beautiful landscapes. Some of the places are very calming and worth visiting. Kerela is famous for being known as 'God's own country'. So you need to first set your priorities and then choose the places accordingly.

+Stallen Watch India Ghoomo videos. India is for all kind of budget and luxury travel. It depends where you go, stay and how you travel. If you travel in worst class in Indian trains and stay in shabby hotels like these guys then you will have bad experience. But if you can afford luxury or have little more budget then India has decent ways to travel and stay. In June this year new set of semi high speed trains will be introduced all over India. Currently we have shatabdi, Rajdhani and Duranto express to name a few. There are at least five luxury trains in India like palace on wheels. So the experience depends on your budget. Prime minister of India Narendra Modi has launched clean india campaign in 2014 which is work in progress. So by 2020 you will find a cleaner India Hopefully.

Pro tip: If available always choose a train which has 2 in the 2nd digit(thousandth place). eg. 12857, 12407. These are super fast trains and will be given track priority over others. Avoid weeklies and specials. Rajdhanis Durontos Shatabdis are rarely delayed. However all bets are off in North India during winter (fog) and festivals. Also, Love your vlogs. I'm a Vol from UTHSC Memphis. Now back in India. You guys make me feel guilty as sometimes I feel that you love and tolerate India better than I do. 🙃

At least they have them. In the USA they try to get rid of the few long distance trains we have just about every year! The ones that sell out and you have to have reservations on because they are so popular. Powerful oil, air, bus and highway people hate them and try every year to get their funding cut and shut them down! So the government will continue to spend unlimited money on air and roads!

Varanasi to Agra via Lucknow! That was one screwed up train route. The straightest route between these two stations is the Kolkata-Delhi mainline, via Allahabad, Kanpur and Etawah. This is the route which almost every local travels on, because trains in this route are mostly on time, give or take an hour. But the rail station on this line in Varanasi is on the other side of Ganga river, and is called Mughal Sarai. You guys could have saved so much trouble if you asked around which train station to search for while booking tickets! Tips for anyone travelling to Varanasi: Always use Mughal Sarai Junction as your railhead! Edit: also trains running on mainline have pantry service where you'd have all those people selling refreshments etc.

Delay is common with Indian Railways. You can order food by app (not sure if it was available for your train). and that dust storm is common in summer season in India and will frequently come in April and May. Stay healthy and take precautions while going out as temperature will now rise very fast.

My husband and I took a sleeper train to Agra. Loved it, we got upgraded to 2nd class AC on one train and shared a double carridge with an Indian family who were lovely. One other train we took we had window beds , which are narrower. A tiny man used to go up and down the train at breakfast and dinner selling tea from a pot bigger than himself. The tea was only 10p (UK) a cup.Also food sellers got on selling breakfast chilli omlettes and curry and rice at dinner. Very good prices. We ate anything local, no illness at all.Really loved the whole experince in India. Happy travels X

Also before your next train journey, print the timetable...that will tell you how long the train will stop at each station...it can be as much as 30 mins in big stations. You can safely get down and get stuff to eat. One of the joys of Indian train travel is eating all through the journey and having tens of cups of Chai (or coffee !!).

The issue is in India train routes are very congested with no real upgrades to the network since 1990s and on top of that freight has grown exponential putting even more stress on the network. But things will be on time in future thanks to a separate freight corridor which will decouple it from passenger rail network meaning trains can arrive and leave on time. Its not a lack of carrying to be on time just that it is not technically possible to put more trains on those tracks without safety issues

I have had no less than 40 overnight train trips in India. In my experience, a 2 hour delay is not unusual, a 10 hour delay is very unusual. However, I have found flight delays more prevalent. If there is fog/smog in Delhi, not unusual, it seems to really mess up the entire system. Highly unusual that there were no chai or food wallahs around. Curious why you didn't ask around or go to the main engine/ticket office. Just ask for chai or coffee and someone, even a passenger, should have an explanation.

This was one of my favorite experiences when I went to India. Some advice for others. Always take snacks! Don't accept food or drink from people on the train. Take a chain (I used a choker chain for a dog) and a padlock so you can put your bags under the bunk and lock them to the underside of the bunk. And don't ever expect the train to reach it's destination on time ♡

Really sound advice! We do the same here. Accepting food and drinks from people in the trains could turn out to be really dangerous. Many criminals operate by poisoning people or giving sedatives in food and then stealing belongings. Better to carry one's own stuff or buy things

Kara, do you have access to caffeine pills, i.e. brands like Vivarin, Stay Awake, etc.? I know it's not the same as sipping on hot coffee flavored with your cream and/or sweetness preferences, but they make the difference between total deprivation and getting the needed kick in the butt for energy/alertness. I never learned to like coffee nor tea. I discovered caffeine pills when I had to work 2 jobs to make ends meet. I've been keeping some on hand since 1993 (yes, I'm that old.}

raw Lemon You can't do much if travellers chose to visit slums instead of exploring the better parts of India. There is no country in the world that doesn't have slums around the "well doing" cities of the country. These guys visited Delhi Successfully ignoring all that India has to offer. Only showed slums. Akshardham temple, India gate, you know there are many things to do in Delhi. They preferred to play Holi in unfamiliar and unsafe neighborhoods. Staying away from the "better" places. As in Holi parties at huge grounds in cities. The thing is the foreigner reading this comment would probably be surprised to discover that (New)Delhi has one of the most dense metro system in the whole world. I know it sitting here in Surat, 1000s kms away from Delhi. Did they even used it once? I mean what Traveller in the world wants to visit slums? I'm Indian myself and I feel disgusted looking at all things they cover. Just being honest here, they only showed the worse sides of India. These foreigners are just being super humble in comment section. They didn't say anything bad. Kudos to these guys. I guess it comes from the unsaid rule of KZfaq "Show people what they want to see in order to earn more subs and money". And as you already might be knowing disgust sells. Watch the video once again. You will encounter lots of statements where they actually are selling disgust with a smiling face. For instance listen to what she says as she enters the train coach.

Prasann Why should anyone feel unsafe anywhere in our country?? The tourists should be made aware of certain no-go zones that exist in every country. Other than that they should be able to enjoy safely everywhere.

Prasann Kshatriya - I totally agreed. I really don't understand why they are only focusing on slum part of India... As a middle class Indian even I don't visit or stay at such hotels.

Really like your attitude, guys. Even us Indians, who are so used to such long delays, get frustrated while travelling on a train which has been delayed so much. But you guys kept your calm and were super cool about it. Pantry cars are available in most long distance trains. They offer meals and snacks at a pre-defined price (so there is no scope of cheating). It seems your train, unfortunately, did not have the pantry car. I saw your next video where you travelled 1st AC in Duronto. I am glad you did redeem train travel in India. :)

Surprised that you guys are super cool to absorb all eventualities you face. The crowd, the dust, the heat, the sickness. Now the delays that upsets your planning (which are the realities of this part of the world which might be strange to you). May be you were prepared for all these. Anyhow, get well soon to really enjoy your journey. Hope you go towards the south part of this country.

Armand Haraidun yes u can buy at any mobile store but they require proof like Indian driving license or adhaar or passport for foreigners I guess. But I am just telling in case if Kara and Nate don't have any Indian sim yet. Ola/Uber can only be booked after verification of Indian sim on mobile.

@bailey Samuelson railways announce some special trains for passengers during high demand..these spl trains are poor in facilities and notorious for being late..pls avoid special trains like these while travelling in india.
@notthesamagain
@notthesamagain 5 жыл бұрын
Except for @bailey Samuelson all the others seems totally alienated believing you ALWAYS have 1st class either option or the money to spend on it just cause you are a tourist. Also the main difference between tourists and Travellers are : the first basic wanna go to see the "Disney" version places , the second want to experience the place as local at least from time to time. Face it ..THIS is closer to more Indian reality than porsh "tour groups". 1.6 billion people .. nearly 26% of illiteracy and almost 270 million living under poverty line means 1st class isn't a reality and spending tons of money "just because it's cheap" it's almost offensive. Been there the same time as them and did quite the same except I did it solo and I'm a woman.

@@notthesamagain bruh ! You guys always forget one thing that India has both of it's sides . If they are here for culture they gonna spend easy money . I mean 1$=65₹ ( aprx. ) . If they are here for local experience, well they already know too much about it back home from news stations or channels . Secondly, even the educated class of India doesn't travel in these trains ( I am not a butthurt but it's a general thing that every Indian knows that these local trains are meant to be late to lobby for express trains or tier 1 trains ) . Thirdly, I know that we have aprx. 270M extremely poor people but we also have a well and good middle or rich class that amounts to ~600M . I mean when we say India's 40-60% that's the kind of no. you gonna get .

Guys please see the positivity in their sprit. They might not have best local know-how but they are taking every shock and surprise so positively. This country is huge with so much of variety and they are having an experience which they might not get in the future as India is rapidly urbanising. We all should them a safe and enjoyable travel. (I though wish they had a community where they could interact with locals to plan better in advance on critical things like health, stay , travel etc )
