Various news reports about the Tim Burton-directed "Batman" movie, from Feb. 1989 (when the trailer was released) to June 1989 (when the actual movie opened). Included is a news report (in progress) from Movietime (the predecessor to "E"), interviewing people who saw the trailer to the film, a few months before the movie came out. There is also a report showing the premiere of the film in Los Angeles, including a brief clip of Batman co-creator Bob Kane. Finally, there is a report on Batman which includes brief comments by former Batman writers Steve Englehart and Mike Friedrich.

“Horribly underwriten”? “Unbalanced”? This is a criticism i’ve never understood about the movie. This movie is just as much a batman movie as it is a joker movie. Batman’s character arc and story is shadowy and mysterious because that’s the point, it’s subtle. Batman is shadowy and mysterious and The Joker is wild and crazy. The juxtaposition adds to the characterization. One of the biggest reasons i feel this movie holds up

It's just weird that up until that time Adam West was the latest image people had of Batman in live action. I was really young at the time but I could still tell there was something not right about all that without fully knowing what satire was. All the Keaton stuff was a blur being so young but I distincly remember people not being happy about it. More depressing is rembering how long it took to get a Spider-Man movie made, there was actually a teaser trailer shown around that time before there was even a script. At various times between 1985 and 2000 you would hear rumors that they were about to start production with any number of actors/directors attached. Even when they were actually on set with Raimi and Maguire I thought it was bullshit yet again. It's crazy looking back and now realizing there have been five Spider-Man movies and have caster their third iteration. I'm not sure why I went on that Spider-Man rant out of nowhere. I think I'm just trying to say we're all awfully spoiled these days with comic movies compared to the 1980s when there were basically 2

After BvS, Ben Affleck as director seriously needs to think about noir style (if not gothic) when he decides to make his Batman movies. Batman originally was a pulp hero and Burton is a genius.

daustin8888 hmm...exactly. What I loved about Arkham Asylum was that it was very realistic (something that fans today want in all comic book superhero movies since Nolan's TDK trilogy), yet faithful to the comics and has the gothic noir style that fits Batman. The early Detective Comics days of Batman had both pulp fiction and gothic literature themes.

Many seriously underestimated the appeal and uniqueness of Michael Keaton. A stroke of casting genius by Burton that wouldn't be matched until Nolan cast Heath as Joker. Both casting choices were initially met with backlash and skepticism. Now we can't imagine it any other way. Can't wait to see Mike play Bats again in the upcoming Flash movie. But sad that we'll never get to see Heath play Joker again...

When you think about it, Tim Burton's 1989 Batman really set the new standard for how the modern Batman would/should/is going to be. This really opened the door for the DARK knight in film media. Every Batman-related film and television show has been based on how high Burton set the bar. My opinion, of course.

I was 9 when this happened and it was an amazing era. I loved all the merchandize and fanfare that took place. The Batman TV series was put back on tv and I loved it (despite what the boys at 6:00 says I loved both.) At my school we collected the TOPPS brand trading cards. As an adult I got the whole set off of Ebay for $30, fulfilling my desire as a boy to have the set. I had the t-shirt the boy at 6:00 has as well. As for the movie? Well I had really gotten into the TV series by then (light hearted) and therefore it seemed very dark for me. I wasn't used to see such grown-up movies probably. But I still loved it. I much preferred the Batman in the movie than the TV series when it came time for role playing.

Why do many people keeping saying that? Sure, the 80s were a nice time, but don't forget the amount of serial killers, homophobia, racism (obviously), etc. There was never a "times were simpler". Each generation is different and some of those people can't seem to understand that. Because they only reflect on the good things from each past generation, and then saying all the negative things about this generation. Some of those people are ungrateful. how incredible the story is, in 89 people did not believe that Keaton could be Batman, because of his participation in comic movies, 2022 and people do not believe that Robert Pattison can be a good Batman, because of his participation in the twilight movies and look, the two kept their mouths shut in bulk

This movie was so awesome! I went to see it a few times! The lines where as long as going around the blocks! I remember trying to collect and get my hands on every memorabilia and collectible’s from the movie! And I still have many collections from the movie today! Priceless to me! By the way! “Boy was Mr. Bob Kane got it right about Michael Keaton!”👍

Just to point out that Jack Nicholson's star power wouldn't be enough to save the film. The movie would have to be really good. Luckily it was.

It wasn't just one event. It's happened a few times. But I understand what you're saying. You can't live you're life in fear. But I'll be honest with you,I am kinda cautious about seeing "Batman v Superman" on opening night, because of what happened with "The Dark Knight Rises".

Even to this very day, Tim Burton's Batman still holds up. To me, it's still blows Nolan's Dark Knight out of the water by a milestone. Michael Keaton was and always will be Batman, and Jack Nicholson is The Joker, the only true live action Joker.

I think of the writing for Batman 89 was a little bit more 'tighter' in the 2nd half, it would have really blown the Nolan Batman out of the water. 89 Batman had a real charm and mystery that's lacking in Nolan's. And Pfeiffer's Catwoman was just perfection.

What is with the preteen girls with the "hipster " hats and black shirts at 3:47 and another one at 5:06 ? I was 6 years old in 1989 and have very vague, fuzzy memories of that kinda being a trend with older kids but what was it called and what was it supposed to represent? lol. My older brothers remember it too but don't know either. This is such an awesome time capsule! The fashion, the hype around Batman 89..it was HUGE! One of my early memories was that summer. You could not escape the Batman merchandise, it was everywhere. Saw it several times in theaters with my brothers and dad then got the VHS tape. Great times, miss the 80s
