Hi Chris, I respect your opinion. There is some truth in what you say. The part you are missing is, many of my students attend and graduate music college on music scholarship. My son graduates on scholarship from Cal Art’s with his Master in Jazz in May 2023. Knowing what you know now, wouldn’t you have preferred entering college already knowing most Beats & styles on the charts, have Solid sight reading skills and soloing skills? Being original IS very important, but being well prepared early never hurts & can greatly help get a good offer from a college. I look forward to hearing you play soon. 🙏🏽🥁

@@AlVelasquezDrums I was speaking more in terms of the fact that the colleges don't do anything to help you as you exit schooling. Career development mainly. If you're not a music ed major they don't do really anything as far as getting work or job placement. Just don't think the colleges care about actually helping you get work, because they don't care. I did percussion and drum set playing mostly. As a drummer, college wasn't necessary, at least for me. You can study with teachers outside of school and not waste your money on colleges. Just my opinion from my own experience. I don't disagree with what you're saying though.

@@Chris_Stanley007 , thank you Chris. I appreciate your point of view. For clarity, I took the path you suggested of studying privately instead of college . I always dreamt of playing in college but I couldn’t afford it (even in the 80’s) so I studied with those same instructors privately. College music is unlike a trade school. They are not necessarily connected with job opportunities but good colleges help connect future players together in exceptional playing situations . The cost of college is a genuine topic for another time. I have sent many students to study at Jr Colleges in order to continue advancing while saving significant money. (That’s what I had to do. My replacement on a PBS tour was my student. He too attended only Jr College) The lessons I share, as well as the Content on Drum Channel are designed to help prepare young drummers at a significantly reduced price I teach at Westlake Drum Center.
