You can do this in Ableton. I was doing it today! Just make Repitch your default Warp mode. Easy

Yeah similar it’s just formant as a warped edit if the target pitch isn’t to far off otherwise you will get artifacts the ProTools varispeed does sound more authentic but I still prefer melodyne

But ableton SUCKS haha. It's more a trend for shitty midi trap producers than a serious daw.

Varispeed has been used since the 70s by bands like The Sweet in their vocal harmonies when they needed to hit super high notes..pretty cool sound

Can you automate the varispeed effect to make the track slow down at the end. Basically what mike dean does to those travis scott outros on a song like The Prayer from Days Before Rodeo. Is that what they are doing?

i might be a year late, but yeah if you automate your bpm to slow down, any tracks set up this way will audibly slow down

I notice you don't wear headphones while recording. Do you pick up the instrumental in your vocal tracks?

I was wondering the same. My best guess is that he’s not listening at a high volume in the room and the SM7B is just very directional and good at rear rejection.

tried this in Studio One, but the vocals become really warbled and this weird vibrato thing that made them unusable. :(

If you haven't figured it out yet...Select an audio event and in the info line under “musical mode” change it to “musical.” there should also be a tab named “Algorithm” next to musical mode. Change that to anything with “tape” in the title. Tape formant is my go to for sound design

It's a cool recording technique, but how do you handle live performance? I want music that people can reproduce on stage.
@intheblink
@intheblink 3 жыл бұрын
I’d guess you could sample and play anything too crazy like the high ad-lib he does and then just learn the other parts at speed and have them handled by a backup singer? Transpose any notes that ended up being too high or too low?
@alexbreyer6921
@alexbreyer6921 3 жыл бұрын
@@intheblink reasonable suggestions. It certainly sounds cool, but I might stick to creating things from the onset with personnel to pull things off. Background recordings never feel good to me on stage. I know these days that might have me be in a minority.

Its like camera tech. People use a function because it is available and sounds interesting--not because the subject matter or the words or tune call for it. The idea should come before the way to achieve effect is imagined for best results. That isnt what the case is mostly, which is why it doesnt fit. Just because you can do it doesnt mean you should. (It sounds cool so lets use it, doesnt work well.)

If you wanna sound like a James Blake ripoff this guy here is your man. Seriously: Interesting technique, but heard way too often in the last years. Think we can stop now with this crying-voice-singing.
