VR is essential for helicopter sim. Which is why I can't recommend Varjo.

I just bought a Pimax Crystal and while the headset seems to work fine and I can see a pin sharp cockpit in DCS, the software is laughably bad. First is the way the Pimax Play software likes to lock up my PC requiring a hard reboot at times. The software uses bizarre approximations of English. Now, Steam VR is no longer working with my headset, so I can't play IL-2 Flying Circus. It works like a charm with MSFS 2020 as long as you don't turn on DFR. With DFR on you get weird bright anomalies in the clouds that are really distracting on night flights. Otherwise, the Crystal plays well with MSFS and DCS. It seems like DCS is where the Crystal really shines though. No more squinting at fuzzy dials in the cockpit and DFR improves framerates so you can add more eye-candy. We'll just have to wait and see if and when the hardware fails.

I just got one as well and not only is the software not very inspiring but the instructions were essentially non-existent. However I find it MUCH more comfortable than the Varjo and the field of view is obviously much better while keeping visual quality equivalent.

I also own a Varjo Aero. One thing that I didn't like was that the garantee time is 1 year, but in europe the mininum time is 2 years, and I live in Europe. I suppose you live in USA, but maybe you can investigate about this.

You can buy comfort kit for Aero, which adds a counterweight. But we should not have to buy such addons from 3rd party. For the price of 1200€, headset should at least be comfortable to wear.

Agreed. I just picked up a Pimax Crystal and it's comfortable out of the box. You can get a counterweight for it too but you don't have to despite being a bit heavier than the Aero. It's already pretty well balanced with the battery pack sitting on the back.

I wanted to get a pimax crystal but when I got the headset itself not only was the headset broken (graphical artifacting in both screens), the handsets were broken (wouldn't charge correctly, one took 6 hours the other didn't fully charge after 24, it's supposed to take 2, and the right handset wouldn't track properly), but the worst part is that when the pimax software asked me to let it update it set off a bunch of windows defender malware alerts. So I got rid of it. At this point the only option is an aero, which lasts about a year from what I have seen and is missing a bunch of features and has a laughably small field of view or a quest 3 which is by and large pretty good but doesn't quite have the best image quality and is missing eye tracking which is the most important part of a modern headset. There's also the option of waiting to see if the scamnium VR-1 actually ends up being a scam but that's a long wait for a train that isn't likely to come. Its a shame HP dropped out of VR, they had the best headset. Probably going to end up getting a quest 3. It's dirt cheap and 90% close to perfect.

I just got a Pimax Crystal to replace the Varjo. I'm sorry yours came with such problems -- mine is working well though it took many hours to finally get it configured and working. I'm kind of surprised about that -- the instructions were almost non-existent, and it's not simply a "plug and play" item. BUT, I can say it's more comfortable than the Varjo ever was, the field of view is more natural, and the visual quality is as good. I don't know about long term reliability or customer service from Pimax at this point, but sadly I'm all too familiar with Varjo and there's no way I would sign up for that again. I agree with you about HP, backing from a proper old school company would be nice in this market. It feels to me like there isn't currently a good VR solution that checks all the boxes.

@@CaptainHelisim Glad it is working for you. Regarding customer service the common thing i have seen is that unless you are a big influencer theyre useless. I have limited experience but they were pretty bad in my case. I am curious about the malware alerts though, i havent seen any other reports of that, but due to the timing the pimax was the only potential culprit. If it had worked it would have been a perfect headset. Assuming they actually do release a wireless module (they have promised this since the 4k days) itll have everything you could want in a headset through the addons.

@@jimmydesouza4375 I have misgivings about wireless. My intuition tells me wireless hi res headgear is going to incur an unacceptable lag which probably accounts for the vaporware. It's just too much data to toss across the air without some kind of compromise that will be a tradeoff between quality and lag.

@@CaptainHelisim If you're on a VR headset you are already trading quality out. A VR headset has a 32 bit signal and due to the resolutions and framerates they all exceed what even displayport is capable of, so you're always experiencing some form of compression. 6e wireless and the gen 2 snapdragon allows you to get around 1Gb/s and I have seen people say that there's no noticable quality loss there (only experienced 250Mb/s myself which wasn't too bad, I actually couldn't notice any artefacting but I never played any pixel hunting type games). If they use WiGig like the vive pro wireless kit did that can push bandwidths greater than 5Gb/s and so require almost no compression. There's always a latency added in due to the compression and decompression, but it's only around 10ms so nothing horrible. Personally though not having to bother with the wire is a game changer so I'd be willing to put up with a lot for that alone.

You are a poor pilot, learn with monitor first then try vr after montor, you would be surprised, vr is a richman toy that is not needed, i can do just as good as vr. He gives just another person opinion.

I don't worry about the comments just remember the source, and no I am retired and cannot afford Vr equipment, I can guarantee I can handle aircraft real nice probably better than you, I started before Vr and will leave the same way. Have a great day.

You should watch videos before being condescending. The guy describes that what you suggest is exactly what he did lmao. Also if you retired and can't afford to buy something that is ultimately as small an expense as a VR headset then you're kind of saying you failed at life, so you really have no grounds to be condescending.
