Live recording of Song inspired by this Sanskrit passage from the Upanishads
Featuring the wonderful Jay Vadukul on Tabla
महोपनिषद् mahopaniṣad 6.71- 76
अयं बन्ह्दुरयं नेति गणना लघुचेतसम्
उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्
ayaṃ banhdurayaṃ neti gaṇanā laghucetasam
udāracaritānāṃ tu vasudhaiva kuṭumbakam
Only small-minded people discriminate saying “one is a relative, one is a stranger.”
For those who live magnanimously, the entire world constitutes family.
एषा ब्राह्मी स्थितिः स्वच्चा निष्कामा विगतामया
आदाय विहरन्नेवं संकटेषु न मुह्यति
eṣā brāmī sthitiḥ svaccā niṣkāmā vigatāmayā
ādāya viharannevaṃ saṃkaṭeṣu na muhyati
This is the status of Brahman, absolutely pure, beyond all cravings and sufferings.
Equipped thus, roaming the earth, one is not vanquished by crises.
वैराग्यात्पूर्णतामेति मनो नशवशानुगम्
आशया रक्ततामेति शरदीव सरो मलम्
vairāgyātpūrṇatāmeti mano naśavaśānugam
āśayā raktatāmeti śaradīva saro malam
Through detachment, one achieves perfection along the path of negation (of the object). Then the mind, emptied of all cravings is as a pure, clear lake in autumn.
Composed by Gaiea with Tabla by Jay Vadukul
Produced by AJA Studios

Hello Ms Gabriella Burnell. I am a big fan of your work. I just wanted to add that the literal meaning of this phrase 'Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam' is rightly used here in your rendition. But it is this same philosophy using which secularists and ultra-liberals keep pushing their multicultural agenda under the pretext of 'Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam' & masses keep buying the feel-good meaning without actually knowing the background & context in which it was originally used. Contrary to popular myths, this phrase is neither in Vedas nor in the Upanishads or for that matter in Mahabharata or the Puranas. This phrase originally comes from 'Hitopadesha', which is a loop of tales/fables connected to one another. The original shloka is as follows: अयं निज: परो वेति गणना लघुचेतसाम् । उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् ॥ English Transliteration: ayaM nijaH paroveti gaNanA laghu-chetasAM udAra charitAnAM tu vasudhaiva kuTumbhakaM Literal meaning: “This is my own and that a stranger” - is the calculation of the narrow-minded For the magnanimous-hearts however, the entire earth is but a family. In Hitopadesha, a crow (named 'Subhuddhi' meaning good-spirited) warns his friend deer (named Chitranga) to be wary of the over friendly Jackal (named Kshudrabuddhi). The deer didn't pay attention to crow's warning and ends up falling in jackal's deadly trap. However, at last he gets rescued by a crow and a rat (named Mooshika). Far from coming as an ideal or a recommendation, the shloka there was made to come from a shrewd subversionist, the lesson being that one has to exercise discretion from unwittingly trusting such brotherhood-preachers, and that the price for befriending and sheltering the wrong kind under the influence of such unconditional brotherhood, is nothing less than self-destruction.

wow! But from my understanding most Indians still haven't learned anything from their past mistakes. Most Indians aren't educated about great kings of India who actually defeated mughals. Instead, the invaders like mughals who raped, looted, murdered, destroyed thousands of temples are glorified in Indian textbooks. Someone like Gandhi who destorted "Ahimsa" into being cowardly gets all the credit for India's independence. Even Lord Krishna in the Bhagavadgita never said to tolerate injustice. He said to rise, fight, protect your Dharma. We have to thank Swami Vevekandha, who ignited the dying spark of India's greatness in people & introduced Dharma to the west.. because before that, people had come to terms with accepting slavery to the invaders. I really hope people of India take pride in their heritage and not tolerate pseudosecular media like ndtv bash Hindus and degrade the Dharma. I noticed in India.. being "secular" means bash the majority (Hindus). By the way, I'm not an Indian but I am someone who feels a close connection with India and it's glorious past. I am a follower of Sanathana Dharma and proud!

@@irongirlrocks2618 Exactly. There is this quote: Ahimsa parmo Dharmah Dharmo Himsa Thativ Cha Which means the non violence is the greatest Dharma but fighting for Dharma or violence in the name of Dharma is even greater Dharma. This is what Lord Krishna preached to Arjuna on the battlefield. Mahatma Gandhi secularized the meaning of Ahimsa without knowing the context behind it. And I agree with your point that our textbooks have failed us in teaching about the empires and emperors who stood against the Abrahamic invasions like Lachit Borphukan, Kapilendradeva Routray, Krishna Deva Raya etc.
