Replaced STI short shifter with BIlletworkz short shifter kit. Wow what a difference, quality and driving experience is next level over the plastic feeling STI and OEM Subaru factory shifters in the VB WRX. Shift throw is so short, notchy and precise and makes the WRX feel like a sports car.

Just watching you shift I couldn’t believe how short the shifts are. I have the Perrin shift plate and I thought that was short enough. Sheeesh. Thank you for this, great vids as always.

Heck yea! The whole billetworkz kit is awesome, I installed this not too long ago on mine and loving it! I know you haven't gotten to the plate/bushing video yet, but the bushing was surprisingly hard for me to get out and in, then that top bolt for the shifter plate cover had me inventing new cuss words. I thought installing the short shifter would be the hard part but wasn't too bad with all the resources on installs, plus some good notes. The whole kit together makes it a top notch mod, the shifter stop by far was my favorite by eliminating the slop from 1st and 2nd. I did get picky with slop and adjusted both stops meticulously to get the max notch-y-ness, made it a bit difficult to get into reverse but I like where I have it for every other gear. Also, because I am an idiot just posting this here for anyone who gets new knob stuck on adapter... Please just tighten the adapter and nut together tight before putting knob on, adjust and RETIGHTEN as needed before re-putting knob on. It will save you a headache. Heard people were able to get adapter unstuck with pliers or tightening down on shifter, neither of these worked for me... but blue loctite between adapter and shifter and waiting a day got it unstuck for me.

👍Thanks for your insight with your experience installing the entire shifter set up. I am not looking forward to punching out the pin the in the shifter plate off the transmission. That looks like its going to be somewhat difficult and again challenging getting the pin back in with the new plate. Glad your enjoying the WRX content, more videos on the way. 3/16" punch and easy taps to get it out (both inner/outer roll pin), wasn't too bad. Also as others have said get the roll pin started in new plate before going under. The difficult part is doing a bunch of small taps and rotating plate back/forth slightly to get the pin to go in. Definitely use a bigger punch so it doesn't go passed flush. You are right with that part being challenging, but you are a handy guy and got this!

#family it’s nice seeing you actually build the car. I have a daughter as well she’s only 5 so the help is limited but she loves when the turbo kicks in lol. I was thinking of getting the sti shifter but now I’d rather just get short shifter. Thanks for content can’t wait to see the break install.

Thats awesome to hear that your daughter also loves when boost kicks in. My little Julia is 7 and love the turbo kick as well. She still remembers driving in my 450 whp R32 GTR and remembers how hard that car pulls before I lost the front turbo. More to come on the STI brakes soon. I've got the Billetworkz plate, bushing, and shit stop all in and it feels great. Had some issues with a bolt or two while trying to get the short shifter in on my 23 shifter housing, so haven't gotten that on yet, but can't wait! Glad you're enjoying it.

Great video! Did you end up installing the plate? I have the same kit and am moving from the Sti one. Not sure if I want the extra reduction of the plate with the short shift lever. Any thoughts?

I couldn’t get the two bolts out for the housing holding the shifter in. Would just spin. Tried welding a nut to it. Spun off wtf I guess I have to buy another shifter assembly and try and see if that one breaks loose..

Another Bangger Thank u for this one, Was actually looking to see what where the differences with the STI STS and the Billetwork one mine likes to sound clunky the shifter bushing helped a little bit but still so looking at the Biletworks Short Shifter to replace my STI STS. Would definitely love your input on how do u like it better than the STI and if the shift is a lot nicer feeling compared to the STI.

The stock shifter compared to the STI shifter, would be like going from black and white TV to color TV. The STI shifter compared to the BIlletworkz, would be like going from a color tube TV to a 4k HD OLED TV. Its a night and day difference. The STI shifter is easier to drive and put between gears, but feels sloppy. The Billetworks makes you work a little harder for the shifts, but is so much more rewarding to drive. It feels awesome, that's all I can say. Good question and thanks for watching.👍

I would not think so. I don't see how it would effect anything personally. You can always check with your dealership.

If you look close… 12:58 the holes that the cables go into in the STI housing is different. One hole for the cable is slightly higher. Not sure what difference that makes tho.

Maybe if I got to drive a car with this shifter set up on I might want to swap but as it is now the STI shifter my '22 came with + a shift stop and it's fine for me. I have a brass shifter bushing but have not installed it yet. What I really want to do is put in the Group N transmission mount someday soon.

So the WRX base model I'm planning to get in a few days already has the STI Short Throw Shifter option added. I assume that is the same one you installed yourself before this Billetworkz one, right?

Yes most definitely the same STI shift I 1st installed will be the one in your car. Congrats on buying a new VB, I hope you have as much fun as I have with mine.

My 23 with sti shifter has 1500 miles on it and little by little it’s getting noticeably notchier if that’s a word. I think it might need grease because we’ve had a lot of rain over the last 5 days and it’s getting worse. Not a lot but it’s the first time I had a little bit of a problem putting it in first gear. It’s going into Subaru in about an hour. I paid enough for the warranty. I’m used to mustangs because I have a couple which shift really good and I know it will never be like that since it’s cable operated but something is definitely going on.

That sounds like a weird issue. I wonder if its something to do with the shifter plate or bushing. The stick shifter is pretty much sealed up from the bottom. The undercover only has a small slit for it to breath and I cant imagine much water getting up in there. You can always try adding more white lithium grease. Hope you get it figured out.

@@JDMRightHandDrive I brought it into Subaru and they said there was nothing wrong with it. I’m sort of annoyed because I bought the 120k mile warranty for $4200 so I didn’t have to climb under the car. I’d rather use whatever time and energy I have working on my mustangs that don’t have a warranty. I ordered the billetworkz complete shifter kit. So I’m going to use the stock shifter that’s in a box that came in the trunk and build that one and just pull the sti shifter in and out in warranty situations. It seems like the dealer just didn’t want to do anything for whatever reason. There blaming my infotainment connectivity on my iPhone 15 pro max. The other day I had 2 lights come on the dash. One the car on a hill and the other looked like a car with squiggly lines behind it looks like it’s doing a burnout. I’m really hoping it’s not an oil pressure issue I’ve been reading about.

you mentioned the armrest not being long enough. Have you tried the extended option from subaru or aftermarket?

I have not tried the oem armrest extension. I am interested in one, but those darn things are expensive. Maybe later once I finish my car build I can finish off the little interior details.

@JDMRightHandDrive not wrong I'm about the purchase a new wrx and felt the 500+ aud is a considerable cost but I do alot of country driving to that arm rest is important. Thanks again for the videos between the sti and the billet one. Certainly a lacking product from the sti to the aftermarket options to truly reduce and firm up the throw feel.

I have the sti short shifter, with cobb weighted knob, shift plate and shifter bushing. The throws are so short takes some getting use it.

I have the same set up, came with the sti short throw so I just put a Cobb knob and their stage 1 shift kit in. My buddy with a stock shifter is jealous af but doesn’t want to do the labor.

@Mike-xs9gr it wasn't hard to install, hardest part was that forsaken roll pin lol. Also did the pitch stop mount up top before doing the rest at bottom.

Where does the heavy piece go and the bronze bushing?

Those connecting directly to the transmission and shifter linkage. Reduces the shifter throw more and the solid bushing stiffens up the shifter feel.

I decided to to install it since it was made out of plastic. My friend who had a VB WRX bought it from me. Waiting for a better wing option in the future. Just have not decided what I want to get yet. The car is still kind of new, I want to upgrade the body aesthetics last after more brand release products.

Its not very difficult in my opinion. Its just a little time consuming removing the shifter lever from the housing and reinstalling the Billetworkz. Definitely worth all the work to install because the shifting experience is so much more rewarding. Thanks for watching Chris and leaving a comment.
