If your VCR is not rewinding your old VHS tapes, don't trash it. It might be an easy fix. See how I fixed my VCR, which now rewinds perfectly.

There are a couple of things worth pointing out here 1. If your VCR will play and fast-cue forwards and backwards, but simply won't rewind or fast forward, then a worn/stretched belt IS very likely the cause. This is because in play and cue, the tape is being pulled through by a pinch roller that literally pinches the tape against the motor shaft - the role of the belt is simply to turn the take up spool, which is relatively easy to do because the "heavy lifting" is being done by the pinch roller. However, in rewind or fast forward, its the belt that has all the work to do, and this leads me to the next point... 2. A badly worn belt is also a common cause of tapes being eaten. This happens when there isn't even enough tension to turn the take up spool, but the pinch roller is still feeding tape at about 1 inch per second (depending on format), and it ends up having nowhere to go, so you quickly end up with the proverbial rats nest inside the VCR.

I have a Sony vcr and it plays normally and it is doing fast foward and backward normally too but when it comes to slow foward or backward (still on stop mode) it turn off ...i mean, when its close to begin or end of the tape its turning off... how could i repair? Can you help me?

This is what I'm dealing with right now... a JVC HR-S5911U that plays fine, scans forward and backwards fine, but as soon as you fast forward or reverse... it starts slow, but as soon as the tape speeds up, it grinds, then the machine turns off. Unfortunately the belts aren't as easily accessible on this unit, or I'd try myself. Luckily my city still has a repair guy that deals with vcrs. He's already worked on my HR-S7800U last year, at a pretty decent price as well.

In my case, it was not a worn belt, but weak motor. Happened on 2 identical emerson EWV404 VCRs. Belt was not loose as the belt would stop the motor when the driven pulley stopped turning. The VCRs would play and fast-cue either direction but not rewind or fast forward. My solution was to turn the VCR upside down, play, fast-cue forward, stop, fast forward - until it eventually fast forwarded, then it would thereafter auto rewind. Then rightside up, I would fast forward, fail/power back on for eject, reinsert, play, fast-cue forward, stop, fast forward, let auto rewind - until the "play, fast-cue forward" wasn't needed for fast forward to work. Massaging the motor in this way will likely be an ongoing treatment and not a permanent fix. Would never have gotten there without @Dirt Road 90's Kids video, thanks go out to the OP.

one thing i saw with the tape is that its unevenly wrapped on the spool which can cause problems like this. if you look the tape has lots of ridges that arent supposed to be there. one thing you can do fix it is to fast forward all the way, rewind all way, and fast forward all the way again and it should wrap evenly. also you can shrink stretched belts by boiling them in water for a few min (google how long to be sure, dont take my word for it) and if you're going to service it while its plugged in, dont do it on carpet]. static can fry the boards

I'm not sure I fully understand your comment. Won't the tape always be uneven on the spools based on where it is in the video? As mentioned in the video, I could not FF or rewind the tape because of the belt issue. Good tip about the belts. I know that will last for a while, but eventually the rubber is too far gone. I agree that I don't always follow the best practices when dealing with electronics, but have been opening and tinkering since I was a kid and never had any issues, so I'm a little lax on that, I suppose. It probably helps that I've always lived in a fairly humid environment and there's not a lot of static issues here. Thanks for the comments!

Mine would do the slow rewind but not the fast stop+rewind I opened it up put the tape in and then it did stop+rewind 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hi my VCR it does not seem to FF properly, it takes ages to FF a 4 hour tape, and it's slow. What could be the problem. In stop FF it is slow, could the belt or something else be at fault.

The belt would still be my primary suspect. Although it could be other components, the belt is the most likely. As the belt ages and becomes less pliable and hardens, it's most likely that the belt is slipping when the motor is rotating faster. Opening it up and observing it during the FF event should confirm that.

Center pully if its has rubber ring came gear mode switch alinglmemt doesn't release pully break.

Deterioration of 10-20% occurs over a period of 10 to 25 years in normal conditions. It's worse if you have them stored in non climate controlled environments.

@@DirtRoad90sKids i have a few from the late 80's. They were in the closet until about 2007 when them and the other vhs tapes and dvd's were all thrown in a sealed storage bin and thrown in the attic when we moved to the new house. So they have been in an attic for 15 yrs in Florida heat ... I just pulled one of them out and played them and they still look good.
