Back on the 14th night of October of 2004, around 11 pm, the case of Veerappan - India’s most notorious bandit, poacher and smuggler - was put to bed. The Special Task Force (STF) of the Tamil Nadu Police that night had gunned down Veerappan, ending his reign of terror and making ‘Operation Cocoon’ a success. The dreaded criminal’s saga continues to retain its grip on public imagination.
Forest brigand Veerappan ruled dense jungles of South Indian states - Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka - for more than three decades. He murdered over 180 people, including informers, police and forest officials, and kidnapped prominent political leaders for ransom. He was also responsible for slaughtering hundreds of elephants for ivory and smuggling sandalwood worth around Rs 140 crores.
Tamil Nadu and Karnataka formed a joint Special Task Force in 1992 to apprehend Veerappan. However, continued to escape being caught by authorities for a decade and a half before the final gunfight in October 2004.
Spearheaded by IPS K Vijay Kumar, the Tamil Nadu STF had been tracking Veerappan for several months. The STF came to know that the brigand needed to go to a hospital for eye surgery. Following this, a plan to lure him out of forest area was readied.
for an ambulance under the pretext of taking Veerappan to a hospital in Dharmapuri for medical attention. Feeling no suspicion, Veerappan, along with a few of his aides, boarded the ambulance. While they were being rushed out of their hideout, the STF asked them to surrender near Papparapatti village via loudspeakers fitted to their jeeps. Veerappan and his men, however, chose to open fire. Subsequently, the STF surrounded the ambulance and the criminals were gunned down. The operation was officially named ‘Operation Cocoon-
