This particular Study says Whole Food Plant Based diet is best against all-cause mortality. Its basically a caution against processed food. It also has a chart showing non-processed meat being a little bit worse than Ultra-processed plant-based. And non-processed plant based being the best (Fig 2 of the study) But why doesn't Mike talk about that? maybe you should ask yourself.

@@terryjackson9395 Because the study doesn't include people who are meat based, only omnivores. Not _exactly._ I feel like your comparison is half-true though still makes a good point. It’s different since fake meat (meat analogues) have legitimate nutritional value in the sense they are not close to being empty calories like Doritos and Oreos. Which one part of the reason Ultra processed junk foods have even worse impact on the body than other ultraprocessed foods. However, it’s true they are similar the those junk foods in the sense they are not a whole food _(ex: like steak, fresh fish, lentils, beans)_ nor a minimally processed food _(ex: low fat yogurt, rolled oats, canned veg, canned/pouched fish, bean patty made of pressed beans/veg, tempeh, sauerkraut)_ - which experts agree are health-promoting. They don’t even qualify as a regular “processed food” _(okay if not a staple of your diet)_ they fall into the UPF/ultraprocessed food category - which is “ true half” part of the comparison to Doritos. Which makes them more similar to either UPFs with nutritional value _(ex: lunch meat, sausages, most frozen dinners whether vegetarian/vegan or containing meat/animal sourced foods)_ and/or some fast food entrees _(ex: from McD, BK, Popeyes)_ rather than junk food snack that’s equally as processed but has no notable nutritional value. I don’t eat fast food ever but I will occasionally eat meat analogues especially if I get invited to a BBQ. They can satisfy a rare craving but it’s strange that’s it’s not obvious that they’re meant to be eaten in moderation _(ie; buying a package from the store every couple/few months ideally; there’s not many foods in isolation that can negatively impact a somewhat fit/healthy person if they’re only eating 5-to-26 portions a year)_ If you wouldn’t eat a whopper every week you shouldn’t eat the impossible whopper every week either. This food is supposed to be usually avoided because it’s a treat/indulgence

How do you avoid starchy carbs on a wholefood vegan diet without being severly protein deficient? All of the natural plant foods that are considered high in protein have relatively more starch than protein in them by at least 3 to 1, not to mention that protein is poorer quality and less bioavailable than that from animal sources. Without consuming some sort of highly processed protein isolate it is impossible to get sufficient protein and not consume massive amounts of carbs on a vegan diet.

Literally this study shows whole food plant based diet has lowest mortality. Don't spin it otherwise... Study says Whole Food Plant Based diet is best, and there's harm in all ultra-processed food diets vs whole food plant based.. Quote: "Plant-sourced non-UPF may be associated with a lower risk of CVD. These results support the notion to improve CVD health outcomes with a shift towards plant-sourced food choices that consider the degree of food processing. Our findings also demonstrated that the relationship between the dietary contribution of non-red meat (all foods, except red meat) and CVD risk depended on whether it underwent ultra-processing or not." Researchers found that for every 10% increase in plant-based foods, the risk of death from heart disease fell by 20%. Yet, when the increase in plant-based foods came from UPFs, it was linked to a 12%rise in heart disease-related deaths. Lead study author Fernanda Rauber explained that the composition and processing methods of UPFs can lead to higher blood pressure and cholesterol. (yes cholesterol)

It's the most duh study ever but bad faith actors like this are totally misrepresenting the data and banking on the general public not having scientific literacy to actually go read the study and find out how bad these youtubers and the media are.

This is called confirmation bias. If you read the study, 0.2% of foods were vegan fake meats. Vegan UPF is potato chips, donuts, peanut M&Ms, pastries, soft drinks, booze (!), sugar frosted flakes, margarine, pre-sliced bread and similar junk. Real, unprocessed meat did about as poorly as vegan UPF (think donuts and M&Ms and such garbage) and *all* the error bars overlapped so there's no statistical resolving power there anyone.

Its like cattle on "AMP" Adaptive Multi-Paddock grazing can not only increase diversity in pasture plants, wildlife habitat, and cooling because of increased ground cover, it also increases water infiltration into the soil and ground water percolation into aquifers and lateral movement of water in the soil into streams (protecting topsoil and filtering water through soil), but the cattle are walking pro-biotic factories that mulch grasses and forbs in 12-24hrs and feed soil life and create new topsoil while producing high quality protein that is rich in Omega 3s (more than in wild caught salmon) and other phytonutrients (unlike feedlot cattle). Plus its a common practice in Regenerative Agriculture to follow cattle with sheep, and birds and even pigs where the exact same acreage can produce meat, milk, eggs, leather, wool, bacon, and even honey and wildlife..... Understanding Ag has the scientific studies.

Did any of you actually read the study? Plant-based meats are essentially not part of the study (0.2% of total). It is comparing things like donuts and sliced bread (vegan UPF) to things like brown rice and cabbage (vegan non-UPF) to things like steak (non-vegan non-UPF) to things like salami and canned spray cheese (non-vegan UPF). What it finds is that non-vegan UPF is as bad as vegan UPF and the error bars all overlap so the significance is extremely low.

What's not surprising is that they lied about what the study actually said. The study says nothing about vegan fake meats (0.2% of total foods), the bulk part of the vegan UPF category was chips, cookies, margarine, candy, breakfast cereals, soft drinks, pre-sliced bread, pretzels, "industrial pizza" etc. What it also says is that non-vegan UPF (steak, eggs etc) did as poorly as vegan UPF. But all the error bars overlap anyway so it doesn't even tell you that. They made up a lie and ran with it, now you took up the lie and kept spreading it.

I struggle with this. When my kids were still children, my husband and I grew most of our own vegetables and many fruits as well as chickens and we fished from the bayou in the front yard. After they finished school and I finished my doctorate, I began extremely involved jobs that made it impossible to cook daily, and I moved from my little camp/shack in the Deep South to a house in a major city so I had no room to grow trees and garden. I wanted to make better “convenience” choices and I hoped these meat substitutes would make that possible. Alas, it’s just junk food in a fancy wrapper. I’m still not making good choices. I’ve gained weight. I travel a lot for work and I’m eating at airports and doordashing to motels in the Midwest. I gotta get it together but I wish I wasn’t gullible enough to believe that there was an easy solution coming out of capitalism to save me.

Re chocolate, I would expect that it's the inclusion of sugar (though there are many chocolate varieties with little, even no, sugar). Referring to chocolate as 'processed' would pertain to the fact that cocoa butter needs to heated to a little above 40 degrees Celsius to completely melt all the crystallized fatty acids naturally present in the raw cocoa butter, then allowed to cool to around 27 degrees to enable the formation of the 'crisp' crystal structure that gives chocolate its 'snap', agitated to break down other any other crystal types, and then allowed to cool very slowly (hence over some time) to ensure the optimal snap. The Wikipedia page gives a good explanation of how chocolate is made. Of course there are some that have, for example, other plant-sourced oils added (typically other saturated ones) in order to reduce the proportion of [more expensive] cocoa butter, or, say, added candy pieces. But much proper chocolate comprises just cocoa butter, cocoa solids (what we know of as cocoa nibs or powder), an amount of sugar (dependent on the variety), plus a small amount of lecithin to help make the melted chocolate 'flow' more easily into the shaping molds. In fact the amount of added lecithin is necessarily low, as more than just a very small percent - possibly even as little as just one half a percent - would start to have the opposite effect on the chocolate's fluidity. Let's remember that organic pasture-raised eggs also contain lecithin (albeit an animal form), but we do not get overly concerned about the effect that *this* might have on our microbiome or other organs and functions.

I had to give up dairy due to eczema but there's no way I'd become a vegetarian or vegan for the following reasons: 1) Cows/pigs/chickens produce manure that fertilise the crops so less chemical fertiliser is used. 2) No cows/pigs/chickens means no manure, except human manure, for the crops so more chemical fertiliser. There's not enough room for enough compost to replace the manure and compost heaps need to be carefully managed as they can put off enough heat to catch fire. 3) No farm animals means no rare breeds would be preserved so mass extinction of many types of animals. In short: meat eaters are keeping vegans alive.

Occasionally, I have plant-based meals, especially if I’ve gone way over my fat allowance for a couple of days in a row. However, there are real, minimally processed protein options that can provide a tasty and nutritious meal. My preferences include tofu, tempeh and black soybeans which I use to make a meatless chili or bbq baked beans. I am not a vegetarian but have no problem eating whole natural foods on occasion on my higher carb days. But ultra processed, NO! Re: steps. I’m not sure that actual steps via walking is the only way to get “steps”. I have an Oura ring that that records step equivalent movements. When I am gardening, I am very active though walking may be minimal. An example of one day last week, my Fitbit showed 5,308 steps but my Oura “steps” were 12,078. I’d been digging, shoveling soil, and setting up a new raised garden. I think my body moved and got more exercise than the Fitbit steps showed. If you use some sort of step counter, that may be only part of the equation. Other movement should count too.
