Casino boss Brian Stanton rates seven casino-heist scenes in movies and television for realism.
He discusses the accuracy of various casino scams and gambling thieves depicted in "Casino" (1995), starring Robert De Niro; "Ocean's Eleven" (2001), with Brad Pitt and George Clooney; and "Ocean's Thirteen" (2007). He also comments on blackjack, poker, and card counting scenes in "The Hangover" (2009), starring Zach Galifianakis and Bradley Cooper, as well as "The Cooler" (2003). Stanton analyzes how casino security deals with cheaters in "3000 Miles to Graceland" (2001) and "Croupier" (1998).
Stanton is a casino boss and director of table games for Station Casinos in Las Vegas. He has over 20 years in the gaming industry and game security.

Because you’ve been conditioned by society to view casinos as “the bad guy” even though that isn’t true. Media and society like to portray them as an evil money grubbing entity, simply because people lose money there. That just doesn’t fly. A casino is a place for entertainment. You go there to have fun, and gamble if you want to. No one who has ever lost money in a casino has lost it due to outside forces. People choose to gamble, people choose to use their money there. It’s not the casino, it’s the player. People don’t know when to quit, or just not gamble in the first place. But whenever anyone loses money for any reason they have to blame someone/something else, never themselves.

It's impossible simply because in order for them to 'walk out' with 160 million dollars, each one of Ocean's crew would have to carry over 300 pounds (136 kg) of cash. I was the 21 dealer in "the Hangover", and I worked in a casino (Venetian) at the time. I was in the business for almost 25 years. I have to say that our scene was more realistic than you give it credit. The movie is a farce, so of course some of it isn't real, like all the attention on the table. But the dealer calling out "splitting fives" is exactly what we do when something strange happens. The scene is so realistic, that you had to point out the pit boss & floorman wouldn't hide their mouths, which is true. But nitpicking. I'd like to be the expert on these casino things.

The one thing in heist movies that absolutely cracks me up every time is that the robbers will walk in in a stolen uniform, or dressed like Elvis etc, with their face fully in view, then walk right up to a surveillance camera, then the viewer sees the robber character on the camera screen looking DIRECTLY into the camera and THEN the camera gets spray painted. The robber has walked past who knows how many cameras already, and then looks into a camera from two feet away and then spray paints one? Come on. 🤨🙄

I don’t think the reason for the spray paint after having already been observed on camera is necessarily to hide identity. But since it is Hollywood we’re talking about here, the camera gets painted just as the observer is looking away for them to then look back, notice there’s no “feed”, they do the whole ‘tap the screen’ cliché, then do the, “eh whatever”, right before kicking their feet up on the desk & burying themselves back into the magazine or newspaper.

Card counting is statistic, so when ignorant people catch on that you win more than you lose, they can just bet the way you bet, and also win more than they lose. The casino doesn't really care that one person is winning money, because that happens all the time. The casino does care when everyone starts winning, and the blackjack table turns into a losing operation.

The count room skim scheme in "Casino" was based on a real thing, but there's a lot about how that worked which was condensed and dramatized for the film. The real skim was crazy-elaborate--involved false walls that they'd use to hide the skim money, and then someone not related with the count room at all would find another way to get inside the wall and harvest the skim. It definitely did not entail a "fat f--k walking out with a suitcase". Also the skim mostly involved coins rather than paper money, because the coins were generally sorted and then weighed on balances, and by slipping in fake weights it was quite easy to cook the books. But that would've been too difficult even for Scorcese to adapt, so the process was simplified for the film. The book the film was based on tells the true story of the skim--it's a very short read and I highly recommend it.

Casinos are there to make money, and they will get rid of a customer that is costing them too much. Similar to any other business that realizes the customer is costing them more money than they take in. Now if your card counting encourages other people to come in and lose money while you barely win, you would be more likely to slide under the radar. But if you make it obvious then the casino crew will act appropriately.

In college I was on a card counting team. The "we're sorry you're too good for us" speech is very real. The reality is not very glamorous: card counting sticks out like a sore thumb and nearly every dealer and pit boss could tell we were counting (some would even chat with us when we were). None of them cared unless a computer system somewhere said we won too much money and needed to be cut off.

My friend was at a casino where he was cashed out at blackjack around $8000 and but didn’t know the exact amount. The cashier gave him his money and he went to his room. He got a knock on the door really early, around 7-8am. It was security saying they gave him the wrong amount and need $2500 back. They threatened to arrest him. He was going here quite often. It was astonishing. What if he spent it? He had no reason to believe he couldn’t.

That is hilariously impossible. I had the option to take a check or get paid in cash and I chose the cash for the insta/snap/facebook selfie shot holding out two fans of Benjamin Franklins.

This person's story sounds silly but to assert that someone couldn't overpay just because security is standing there and nthe lady that paid you was focused and didn't make a mistake is nonsense. I once withdrew 2000 bucks from a bank and ask for 400 in 20's. The lady counted out 16 hundred dollar bills then did something else on and answered a co-worker's question. Then counted out 20 hundred dollar bills instead of 20 20's. I thought I just wasn't going to get any twenties and she asked me if I needed it in an envelope. I said yes. I watched her put the money in and then finished up my portion of signing. When I went to pull the money out a few hours later there was $3,600. Every time that Casino clip comes up I have the same question, and in this one they actually mention the dealer peeking at their hole card: when is that necessary? My blackjack knowledge is limited, but in the options I know the value of the hole card doesn't need to be known until the point it would be public. EDIT: found the answer, guess Google decided to be friendly this time. In the US if the dealer shows an Ace or 10-value card they have to check if they have a natural Blackjack, in which case the hand is immediately over before any more player actions. I learned the game on a computer program that did Insurance instead for those situations.

3:19 The equations flash by pretty quickly. Most of them look like physics equations. The 12(t) = A cos(omega(t-t0)) is a wave of some kind. The (A+eta)^2+kappa^2 looks like transmission and reflection corfficients in a wave (it is hard to tell). At around 3:21, the 1/2pi integral of e^...d theta is some kind of integral (probably ofver a circular region in the complex plane). I think I saw a couple of binomial ceofficients and summations (which would appear in these card math), but they were not the equations that were in the front. One of the summations was definitely Fourier series though, which is used for waves rather than card math. All this to say, I think they took a random electromagnetism textbook or Partial Differential equations textbook and copied a few equations from it. They should have used a combinatorics, probability, or statistics book instead, if they wanted to be more accurate
