Episode 06 and we are joined by expert dynamicist Mike Law to talk about Ride & Vertical Dynamics.
The responses of the sprung and unsprung masses of a racecar to accelerative inputs from the driver and the track surface are super important parameters to control in the development of performance and so this is a particularly interesting element to understand.
Here, we discuss the influence of ride performance on dynamics, why it is important, and the approach to development used in modern motorsport. We also finish off with a short community Q&A session.
Enjoy!

Mike has a book published called "Ace Thinking" which takes the skills and experience he's gained developing race cars to create a framework for approaching tasks, engineering and otherwise.
Many of the approaches to problems you hear in these episodes are communicated in the book, which you can find on Amazon at: www.amazon.co.....
All proceeds from the book go towards the Small Piece Trust.
This episode is also available on Spotify and Apple under the title "Wavey Dynamics Insights"

Love these podcasts , they give good insights into vehicle dynamics and the physical significance of parameters. Having some visuals would help understand concepts better or faster.

Thanks Hammad! Your feedback is appreciated. To help us understand better, can you let me know where you would have found illustrations useful here?

Any recommendations for a MBD engineer to better visualise vehicle behaviour ?

Make models! In CAD, paper, from wood or anything. Being able to see with your eyes always helps.

is there any relation between ride frequency and amount of available wheel travel in jounce before the bump stop ? Suppose i select the spring rates to achieve 1.65 hz so how do I select the wheel travel required to achieve 1.65 hz?

Well, generally a higher frequency will produce a smaller amplitude and you may find yourself limited in wheel travel due to the thickness of the wire needed to produce a high ride frequency spring coil, but there's no mathematical relationship between the two. You could specify a 1.65Hz heave frequency with the same wheel travel as a system with 2Hz in heave
