Vehicle Inspectorate (UK) - MOT Matters - No Smoking (1998)
Exhaust emissions harm the environment and are poisonous to health. Testing them in the MOT test is an importants step in protecting these. Vehicles that meet the requirements will cause less harm. To achieve this, it is important that tests are carried out correctly. To ensure correct and fair results, the appropriate standards and procedures must be applied to each vehicle type.

- Emissions test procedures
- Testing of Petrol engined vehicles
- Testing of Diesel engined vehicles
- Identification of vehicle category
- Correct test methods for different categories of vehicle
- use of equipment.

My wonderful old MOT Technician used to say that he would warm up my 57 series 1 diesel whilst performing the physical inspection on the ramps and if he was still alive at the end of the process and could see to drive it off the ramps then it had passed the emissions element of the test! Old age sadly took him this year and not any industry related illness as far as I can establish. Bless your heart Brian!

It was Volvo that made the leap forward in emissions. Volvo was the first to use the lambda sensor.

I remember mr evans from Garrets green VI phoning the office and saying he’d got an elderly gentleman with his escort mk3 we had failed on the workshop filling smoke ( cvh valve seals) and could we show a little more discretion and empathy to older vehicles as the smoke “ wasn’t that bad ) ....

I suppose that you could say that but the electronic controlled pump units are more able to defeat the worst excesses than the governors in old mechanical pumps! Still scares me to watch though. Just ask VW!!!😉

Maybe the old MG had been taken off the road already. Anyway few of the petrol cars featured faired very well: A464 BHL Tax due: 01 November 2003 (19 years, good effort from the Range Rover) VAR 730J Tax due: 01 October 1984 (ie. well before the programme was made) J69 VEW Tax due: 01 February 2002 L539 FON Tax due: 19 April 2004 N104 DKW Tax due: 28 February 2006: The MK5 Escort managed to last 9 years, OK for a car that was already a hideous heap when it was new.

Thats a mk6 escort - much more refined, especially with the zetec engine... N was 1995, so if it lasted until 2006 then its 11 years..

Escort was registered in March 96, so let's say it lasted almost 10 years. Yes, it was the MK6 then, maybe a little less hideous than the MK5, but they were always fairly unloved cars. Can't be many left, wouldn't make much of a future classic.

yeh 10.... Not that long really!! I like my escorts, the base models like this one are still £400-600 cars but the GHIA, GTI and RS models are creeping up slowly. Problem is, they have all been welded to death by now.

Emissions tests killed many an older car alas. The doing away with 4-star leaded petrol didn't help, though my Wolseley 1300 liked 4 - star once the cylinder head had been modified. At the same time I had a Jack Knight five - speed gearbox fitted, and the engine was rebored to 1340cc. Still miss that characterful and reliable old tub now.

In Illinois it's plug into the computer if no check engine light on you pass emissions test the check engine light is on you failed emissions

7:10 That means a bentley or rolls-royce never needed a cat fitting but they did anyway. So if you have a cat turbo r of that period remove it to get better performance and visit the pumps less!
