Very nice! I like it. yeah thats a big aluminum ring, its rotating slowly, it will easily dissipate any heat build up, IF there is any.

Good stuff. I think you don't need the chain because if it breaks is safe. It will not wipe like in steel cable

just to control the rope or shackle flying back at you in case it breaks most people use mats / bags etc etc, which does not really work ... we use chain because you need weight and a material that does not break ....to control the momentum ..

Is this a better alternative to a snatching block, or just a different idea?

New to recovery. What is the purpose of the chain? If the chain is used on the synthetic winch line, would it be used if the line was metal cable?
@bionic1517
@bionic1517 Жыл бұрын
It make is safer so the metal cable don't wipe and kill someone, but the advantage of synthetic line is that it wont wipe so maybe he just switch to a synthetic line and still take the same precaution.

Look up how a pully works - it actually takes 1/2 the effort for the winch to pull the car, same thing as 2 x power i guess!

The keywords you are looking for are “mechanical advantage”.
@Unknown_Random_Guy
@Unknown_Random_Guy Ай бұрын
No, using a single point pulley does not create a 2x mechanical advantage! That is a fallacy. It just redirects the rope angle. In order to get a 2x mechanical advantage, 2 pulleys must be used where one pulley is static and one pulley is moving. This type of system is called a "Block and tackle". The amount of force required is cut by half but the length of rope required to pull is doubled. The pull of the block and tackle results in the same amount of force applied when the force is measured over the longer timeframe.

Why using this instead of snatch blocks though? I would expect more loss to friction than with an actual pulley?
@4xxplore542
@4xxplore542 10 ай бұрын
true but very small friction loss, handle easier and lighter, just overall better.....

@@4xxplore542 yeah I read on them for the last hour. Pretty interesting. They seem pretty darn light, I guess it's also safer cause your rope is literally inside the soft shackle... vs having a DRing and a snatch block that can potentially fail. I guess that also makes it for a more compact setup since the pulley is farther back (again, all the way inside the soft shackle). Its pretty cool, I might get a pair of those, I'm trying to upgrade my rescue kit. Nothing crazy, I live in the city... but I did pull out several people out of the snow... with a few fails under my belt. Having a setup that gives me mechanical advantage, and sometimes literally just to redirect force would help a lot! I'm trying to put a basic kit together... so far I'm thinking a 2-3 of these, a tree saver, 4-5 soft shackles, a long rope and maybe another, medium rope, in case I want to setup a Spanish Burton... and maybe a hand winch, which would help especially if I get stuck myself.

I would still use a bow shackle and steel snatch block, make the winch line your weakest point.
@MattCantSpeakIt
@MattCantSpeakIt 7 ай бұрын
@@lewy1 you seem to be into heavy recovery stuff from your profile picture. I just like helping people out of the snow around my area. I have decided to go for the rings after I saw how much ligther, cheaper, and less rattlely in your trunk. For super heavy jobs, maybe... But for light work, i'll save the weight and the cumbersome nature of the blocks.
@lewy1
@lewy1 7 ай бұрын
@@MattCantSpeakIt definitely lighter and less rattling, not that much cheaper though

@naamangeist7843

For safety. They're used as a damper, to limit how far the winch line will fly if it breaks. I've seen better damping solutions than a steel chain though.

Has anyone else noticed that there’s no universal name for this ring this gentleman has called it a snatch ring I have also seen it been advertised as a recovery ring or a winch ring there’s no one name for this thing at all
@OscarHernandez-vy7nm
@OscarHernandez-vy7nm 2 жыл бұрын
Snatch ring is the most appropriate it is sold with different names because of the person that's selling it and why the y sell them, if they sell it to you as a part of a recovery kit then they will most likely call it a recovery ring, if they are giving it to you for a winch then they'll call it a winch ring, but since it's a more simple form of a snatch block then I believe the actual name is a snach ring
