Damn right we have had them for years in the UK and half the time they dont pick up motorcycles, meaning have had to illegally go through lights as cannot turn around or change lanes on some roads after waiting for 20 minutes at these bloody things.

Seeing Mother Mehdi may have just saved 2020. SOLID VIDEO, I had no idea about those being inductive loops. My entire life I assumed they were pressure based, and even stood in the middle of the road with a couple friends one time trying to set one off. Traffic didn't take too kindly to that one.

@ElectroBOOM , I was building one of these detectors for my thesis. Basically hooked up Colpitts oscillator output with street loop as inductance, feed it to microcontroller counter input through some conditioning, and efectively measuring frequency deviation instead of amplitude. It typically runs at about 80kHz (+/- 50kHz) and it shifts frequency about 2kHz when car passes. But it's sometimes done also trough amplitude.

Reminds me of a fair their organized in my city, where they blocked off an entire street for the fair with a food truck. They placed the food truck across all the lanes and their sensors on one side of a major intersection. Fun times seeing an entire intersection grind to a halt as the system seemed convinced there was a continuous flow of traffic coming from all lanes out of one direction.

This video helped me finally find a good use for those 40v lithium power tool batteries I have kicking around. Four of them should make an acceptable power source for a portable oscilloscope, or any device that rectifies 120v AC. No more inverter noise, and just about as much trouble to lug around. I've been sitting on them for years and it never crossed my mind. Thanks for the inspiration.

Nice. Back when I was in school, the electrician who taught year 1 installed/maintained these, traffic lights, and streetlamps for the city for 20 years before he went to teaching full time. Very smart man, born in Jamaica. He has a great sense of humor. Also, that man could troubleshoot _any_ circuit you threw at him.

It doesn't always make people hear things or get multiple personality hallucinations. Most of them I've encountered are manipulative sociopaths or nonsensical motor-mouths. They weren't committed, though, just roaming. Malignant narcissists likely make their condition worse, as well as neurotoxicity from chemicals and oscillating electric and magnetic fields. They get along well with religious types, so its likely a hard-wired figment of social co-evolution. It can be fixed, but they have to be receptive, and it will take a lot of effort and time with them.

Fun fact. Some car manufacturers install RFID tags on to the underside of the vehicle body for tracking and sequence control in the factory. They are a challenge to read against the metal of the vehicle body, let alone from ground level so nothing to worry about assuming they have not been removed/fallen off already. Number plate recognition is more practical for 'tracking' although fooled easily with false plates.

I actually have an old 10 tube scope, or valve scope if you prefer. It is really nice and has + or - trigger, trigger magnitude input (as it is part of a massive equipment rack), sync to 50 Hz, sync to mains freqency, and sync to internal signal which can be slided or delayed. And all this is analogue stuff controlled by electron tubes. Anyway, what I found when out in the field working on some old radios, the noise from an inverter can be somewhat cancelled if I hammered a meter long metal pole into the ground, and connect the body of the scope to it, which is the ground of the line in ground as well in this old boxyness of magnificance. That might help I thought. (PS one of my tubes is glowing blue, so It must have taken some air at some point, probably when this thing burnt in a housefire from which I bought it.. And still works fine)

tip for the battery powered scope: you could use the space between the powwer supply and the motherboard to make a 220v / 110v battery pack using litium ion 9v batteries. than this batteries ould be pluged directlly into the DC line, without havind to be pass into the AC-DC transformer. for a final touch you could use a soldiering machine to make two holes: one for the USB recharging port and another for a swith, that would switch the power input from the batteries or from the AC city power
