As a kid, I preferred the Vehicle Voltron over the Lion Voltron; but watched both. I managed to buy the Vehicle Voltron set when I was a kid; but sadly lost them over time (heck I bought it in '84 or '85) Don't be disappointed; the Vehicle Voltron was more mature and better written! And Optimus Prime played Captain Hawkins!

Interesting info: Vehicle Voltron (aka Dairugger 15) was an entirely different series when it was first aired in Japan. It was originally not a Voltron until it was redesigned to be merged with the first Voltron series (Lion) and aired as a sequel in USA.

Yes there are three. The first and most popular is the lion Voltron known as Golion. The second is the vehicle Voltron Dairugger XV. The third and least popular (the show lasted a year in select countries) is Albegas.

Good show. I like both shows but was more partial to Vehicle Voltron because of the large fleet battles and the head on the Vehicle Voltron because it looked like a Japanese warrior helmet. A cousin of mine got the Vehicle Voltron one xmas in a Japanese box. He took one look at it and really didn't like. It was quite a flimsy toy compared to Lion Voltron. Bet it could still fetch some money in good condition but then as a kid it was all about having fun.

Seeing vehicle voltron form makes the "form... " phrases so much clearer. (I'm used to lion voltron)

I feel the same way. Lion Voltron rocks, but Vehicle Voltron is still cool. In fact, they both have a special place in my heart.

The episode where they team up was called Fleet of Doom and its actually an animated movie (not just another 22-minute deal). It was designed to fill the gap between Lion and Vehicle and can still be found on DVD.

They did release toys (I had one as a kid). According to the official site, they scrapped plans to release "Gladiator Voltron" due to the poor reception of Vehicle Voltron and just continued to run with the Lions.

That alone is proof that Lion Voltron is the Original Voltron. Which makes him number one!

I like the Vehicle Voltron better., more impressive and faster assembly than the Lion Voltron plus I love the way it formed the blazing sword by merging the two rotoblades together forming as if it were a lightsaber. Unfortunately World Events really screwed up with the cuts and changes to the original Dairugger XV and made this vehicle series hard to follow. As a result Lion Voltron was by far the better series and most remembered.

The first Voltron i saw was this one. I saw the lion one afterwards but you guys know more so i guess this one came latter. But i have seen both of them and to be honest the other voltron looks better but the storyline and episodes of this voltron series were better. If i can recall, the bad guys weren't just plane evil beings. They had a planet, where they lived and the people from the top brass were basically evil. They also had some officers in their ranks which were simpathetic to humans.

So do I! Personally I could never decide which one I liked better. So I like them both. But as you and I both know, most American fans are strictly Lion Voltron fans. But just for the record, I think they're both awesome.

*this brought a tear to my eyes* I forgot that this where I got all of my 'internal sound effects' from as a child. And cartern316, they CAN form Voltron without all of the vehicles - it's been done on the show already. The weapons array of this Voltron vs. the Lions is more powerful.....

@raveakidd - I enjoyed watching both Voltrons, but to me, Vehicle Voltron was a hard charging battle mech. This brute has a cooler blazing sword, spinning lazer blades that fly like boomerangs and slice through objects like miniature swords, solar combat spears, solar whip.......even with 5 minutes of energy this brute is one serious combat machine! Lion Voltron is more fantasy oriented, while the Vehicle series dealt more with politics, governments and military campaigns. More realistic.

Both the lion and vehicle Voltrons are equally cool evil doesn't stand a chance against either one of them.

Actually Lion Voltron/Beast King Go-Lion first aired on March 4, 1981 while Vehicle Voltron/Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV first aired on March 3, 1982. I remember when it aired here in Michigan; the story went that Lion Voltron came first and Vehicle Voltron was the next generation with the previous series' kids.

I had the vehicle Voltron when I was little and it was one of the most awesome toys I have ever seen.

This Voltron had better fight scenes against the Robeasts than the Lion group.

As a child I was kinda disapointed that they got me vehicle Voltron instead of the Lions Voltron. I was a kid. I didn't even know they had a vehicle voltron cartoon. Seeing it now I still think it's better than alot of kid cartoons today. But anyways..

It was commissioned by the guys who made Voltron out of GoLion and Dairugger. They paid Toei to make a crossover movie of the Voltron series, so it was made in Japan, but for US audiences, and it has nothing to do with either Dairugger or GoLion.

The parts above the torso is still believable that it could move... but I've been wondering how the lower portion could move since it looks like it's been put together like building blocks

Man we used to call this Voltron "Car Voltron" back in the day. We thought this shit was wack. It was way too much shit going on in this version for our young asses to keep up with. This shit was like Robotech, with like 20 different muthafuckin' characters every goddamn episode. At least, that's how I remembered it.

well,if you look at the unused gestalt from transformers, (the design that never being made into toys) there's an autobot gestalt using 15 robot like vehicle voltron. And there three teams in it, racing, rescue and construction.

my friend had the die cast metal toys. that joint was hard to put together and tall as hell.

The lion Voltron toy had lots of nice lead in its paint. Vehicle Voltron was healthier. ;)

I have a rare version of the lions the vehicle one i remember viewing on TV alot. wish i could have afforded one when i was young but back then when i saw the toys it was like close to 40 bucks i think . in the early eighties and rather high quality product too.

those car feet must be incredibly tough considering what they hold, not too mention the glass in the windows and windsheild

Damn... I just got this one out of my old mixed up box of toys!... Got the Lion Voltron, near complete with all little human figures... and this Vehicle Voltron, but I'm missing 5-6 pieces... :( These old toys go as far as 100$ on eBay.. but for that, you would have to had a lousy childhood were your father would've kept your toys in the box for "collecting purposes"... lol

I remember a Robot Chicken sketch where they kept screwing up the transformation sequence on this one that all the officers were dead when they went to go save them.

I had this toy. My parents got me THE WRONG VOLTRON when I was a kid. Then I got the real voltron.

I saw Vehicle Voltron first as well and have always preferred that one. Strange for some reason because it looks like the Lion Voltron was actually the first season and Vehicle was teh second.

if i am not mistaken, there are two groups of voltrons. thye lions and the vehicles. the vehicles have many members to their robot while the lions have only 5.

Japan sure loves their robots that combine to form bigger robots.

The lions were the best and could have torn the other voltrons to shreads with their teeth. Most people only remember the lions cause they were the coolest. The most popular is always the most remembered.

if you go back to the original source you will find that the vehicle voltron is the original version, and the lion version is the third incarnation of voltron.

the oringinal 5 piolits of the 5 lions come from the 15 cars i remember an old episode when they asked about them in conversation they dont make cartoons like this anymore dayuum

There needs to be a certain amount of believability in a Sci Fi movie to pull viewers in. Just like in The Empire Strikes Back. Of course it was a fantasy, but it wasn't stupid. I would want a Lion Voltron, but I would hope it would have that same realism that pulls viewers in that ESB had. I think that would be easier to pull off with a Vehicle Voltron, instead of a Lion Voltron which could turn into a Japanese Power Rangers movie like Megazord or something.

Especially considering dainty A- and B- pillars are a mark of Japanese cars :)

Lion Force Voltron got his power from 5 elements. But Vehicle Force Voltron only had 5 minutes of nuclear power. I'd take Lion Force.

Why negative comments about Vehicle Voltron? That's so childish. Do the research: Many adults over 30 prefer Vehicle Voltron series due to the more realistic, serious story plot lines (military strategies, political struggles, espionage, technology problems), while majority of young people like the fantasy type plots comic relief - (Nanny & the mice), teen qualities of the 5 pilots and the animal-like qualities of the robot Lion. Neither version sucks. Both have their pros and con features.

And don't forget there was time when Future Robo Daltanias was slated to be "Voltron of the middle universe". I thought it would have been especially appropriate because Daltanias had a face like the other Voltron's and was made from a Gladiator, LION AND VEHICLE!!!!! Search youTube for Daltanias. You'll see what I mean.

I think it was just a 1 time week long movie for the Vehicle Voltron. I don't think there was a series as long running as the Lion Voltron. Ahhh when Cartoons were treated more seriously unlike the Pokemon kiddie crap they insult kids with today.

i call the series with lions the "Barbie" Voltron...and this series the "Hot Wheels" Voltron...Mattel would have cleaned up on the merchandising

Vehicle Voltron is more believable than a bunch of metal lion robots flying in space. We have a real space shuttle. We don't have a real space lion. Vehicle Voltron has more credit for believability.
