I changed from Garmin to Wahoo Bolt, and I'm glad I did. Very happy, specially with the zoom in and out feature that shows and hides fields on the ride (extremely useful!!!!!) and led indication lights for turning. Bolt has a more modern approach, using your cell to make fast settings. Navigation page looks nicer on Garmin (color), but they both do the job. In real life Garmin Battery will last less than Bolt, about 2 hours less. Garmin is OK, but Bolt is great!

Garmin has been at this long enough to make a more solid and user friendly product that functions as designed. I bough an 810 some yrs ago that I still own. Its given me plenty of issues with connectivity with the ant devices, crashes, and other random things. I dont see myself buying another Garmin, even though I think it looks better and has good features.

After using the Garmin 820 for 2,5 years now, I must say that the biggest let down is the battery life. The 15 hours mentioned in the video was never an option. 15 hours is an absolute joke. And now after 2,5 years it more like 3,5 hours max, if you don’t use navigation. Touchscreen doesn’t work properly when it rains. It takes a long time for the garmin to calculate a route, which isn’t mentioned in this “review “. Honoustly, I would not recommend anyone to buy the 820 or 830.

I'm almost sold on the bolt. Simple, buttons (sweat/ rain proof), phone set up. I'm mostly not concerned about navigation. I'm a bit of a geek though. Considering a Garmin for the greater qty of metrics. Like hrv & muscle oxygen integration. Anyone have experience with these types off features care to comment? Is this something Wahoo could add in the future via firmware updates? Does the bolt display l/r power?

I love the Bolt. Using only a cadence sensor I did a 2 hour ride, which took 16% of the battery (down to 84%) the other day. I didn't recharge it then did a 3 hour and 3 minute ride with only the cadence sensor, and it is down to 57%. However, this Wahoo was sitting in the box for a bit, and the battery has only been charged fully one time. So, I think it will be lasting longer once it has been recharged and discharged a few times. At the current rate, it should be giving me about 12 hours of recording, and I expect even more. But the key point for me is that it keeps up to 2000 hours of ride data, not the 400 or 800 hours that Garmin does. I didn't want a touchscreen because I know they are finicky in the rain, and the buttons on the Wahoo are bulletproof.

The bolt is incredible. I read so many reviews and watched loads of videos to help make my mind up before buying one and for me it’s the best bike GPS I’ve had. I wouldn’t buy a garmin again after having one of these. I think the fact that team sky use them and so many riders are converting to wahoo... it shows they are a real rival for Garmin.

If you check out my Wahoo Bolt Navigation video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m7OEiJaQp9muhIk.html it shows you turn alerts whilst on the data page (2m 24s). Im not sure if you can get it to automatically switch to the map page but the alert whilst on the data page does include countdown, direction, road name and led turn indicator.

Bang for buck - probably the Garmin Edge 820 at the moment as its massively discounted following the launch of the new 830. The 830 has a bigger, better, more responsive screen and some cool features but the 820 has been as low as £140 (currently £157 in Cycle Republic minus another 10% if you are a british cycling member) - IMO its a steam at that price

My Garmin Edge sometimes hangs up saving a ride. It stays hung up until the battery runs completely down. Sometimes it saves the ride and sometimes I lose the ride. I vote for the Wahoo sight unseen.

There really isn't much to choose between them. Personally i'd go with the 820 as i prefer a touch-screen - the 520 plus does not have this and is operated by buttons alone (however this may be a +ve to some).

The Garmin is an absolute pain to use when on the road, the touch screen is not that responsive and is frustrating to use! It also takes a while to load routes and is not that intuitive to use. I have Di2 on two bikes, the Garmin will only detect one, my Wahoo Elemnt detects both! The wahoo also has a zoom feature so you can home in on data and excellent battery life. It also works with Vector power meters but the power metrics are limited compared to the Garmin in terms of offset, power phase and smoothness. I have just returned my Garmin 820 as it did not meet my expectations and is not as good as my Elemnt!

Thanks for taking the time to feedback your experience Lee. I agree that the touch screen is not as sensitive as a modern mobile but its not something i've found frustrating - for anyone who has used an Edge 800/810 or Touring its a big improvement. The Edge 1030's screen sensitivity is a step up again and is more like a phones. The screen swipe to change pages is a feature I really like on the 820 and to be honest once i've started a ride thats all i use to scroll between pre-set data, navigation and elevation pages.

Touchscreen on Garmin 820 is totally frustrating and though I put it very sensitive, it isn't responsive adequately. Moreover, navigation is very unreliable on 820 !! I wonder if wahoo requires riding with smartphone ? I will get rid of my Garmin but the replacement needs to be better for navigation. I don't use powermeter.

@@yvesn58 For the bolt to nav. it needs to have a pre built route from the phone. The garmins can work out new routes without a phone. And also do this while out of mobile data range - all without the phone. And it will re-route if go off course - something the Bolt will never do even if have a phone. The latest Garmins have much better touch screens (work when wet etc) and faster processors - inc. the Edge Explore (which I chose over the Bolt).

I can't speak for the Wahoo but I can speak for the 820 and what I will say about it is that I will never buy another Garmin head unit again. I have had edge 500's in the past and they eventually, through miss-functioning, forced me to upgrade to the 820. Well, the 820 has no battery life (4 hours if your lucky, NOT 15 HOURS), the touch screen is horrible and the processing power is so bad that it's functionality is painfully slow, especially during navigation. The software driving the unit is well known as full of bugs (most of which have been addressed through a major software upgrade, but not all). Not sure what my next unit will be but it won't be a garmin.

The 1030 and 830 touch screens are a massive improvement. Funnily enough though the 820 is still probably my most used cycle GPS even with all the options I have. If I was buying atm id be looking at a 530 or 830 as the sweet spot price wise. I still have a trusty 500 !!
@vincentbayliss151
@vincentbayliss151 4 жыл бұрын
@@VELOGPSTHEINNERTUBE Good to know. I still question the processing power/speed though. When navigating with the 820 in a city environment (which I have done quite a bit of), it was way to slow in updating and guiding. I found that I was constantly having to stop and turn back as the unit would not prompt me to turn till after I had passed that point. I would often find myself pulling out my phone and figuring out where I need to go using Google maps instead. I would assume that processing power has improved with every new model and that it would be a better experience on the 830 or even the 1030. The problem here in Australia is that it would cost me around $850 (for the 1030) to find out. That's a bit of an expensive gamble considering the track record I have had with garmin units. For example, my old 500 takes literally 25 to get sattelite connection. That's why I went to the 820. The 820 would flip out during a ride and flicker between Go and Pause many times per second before it simply stopped recording the ride. I still have problems with it and it won't shut down when I try to power it off. It just reboots and the battery starts draining. I could go on all day about the issues but the point is that I have spent allot of money over 3 seperate garmin head units and 2 of those 3 were very problematic. 1 out of 3 is not good at all and the garmin brand does not sit well in my head any more. Cheers and thanks for the response. I'll do my homework and figure out what will do the job for me. That could still be garmin but probably not. Cheers, Vincent...

In practice there is no worse feature for a bike computer than a touch screen. Absolutely horrible.
@quimicos_comunistas
@quimicos_comunistas 5 жыл бұрын
You need a Touchscreen for navigation, or it is difficult to zoom and to move the map. Also it is not possible to navigate to an adress you search on the device, so I think a Touchscreen is really important for navigation, maybe more for mountainbikers like me. If you just want to follow a route, you don't need this feature, so you can take a 520 plus or elemnt bolt.

do people really need led lights for turning....garmin just gives you an arrow....obviously people cant follow an arrow...so im guessing thats just a fad, maybe people like flashing lights, but an arrow seems to do the job.....why the hell would anyone want to keep using their mobile to change setting ffs....really....another fad, everything has to have an app or be on your mobile.....people dont seem to be able to cope without that for some reason.....as for zooming in and out on elevation....does it matter that much, is that what really sells people on it....tbh ive turned off all that elevation stuff on my garmin, i dont want to see how steep the hill is, how much more to go....each to their own but it seems another piece of information that really isnt that nevessary......yeah, both do the job, but from my perspective the garmin does it better and with less hassle.....
