I always love "non-cycles" like this. It can be neat to think about how another color would do its version of an effect, but it can also be more interesting to let effects stand in isolation rather than having to exist as part of a set

Yup, also leaves room to revisit it if an appropriate idea should pop-up

When the color pie is bleeding together more and more in the modern day I think that non-cycles like this really help in reinforcing it

The problem with effects like this is you need some way of marking the opponent that doesnt give it away. Im personally not a fan of mechanics that require outside materials to use

Agreed. Like wheel of misfortune had potential. But I don't wanna pull out a piece of paper for everyone and stop the game.

Well I think it could be possible to do a cycle of these, since Green, Black, Blue do have their own interesting effects. They seem to be a type of protective reactionary effects. Green could give permanents you control hexproof until end of turn from chosen player, black one could make the chosen player sacrifice their highest power creature, and blue one could be a free counter non creature spell that targets something you control or a type of instant speed clone effect of a creature of the chosen player attacking you. It is just figuring a fun effect that works and isn't oppressive while keeping the types of effects that punish the player going after you.

Oh I thought that the problem would be "It was you the entire time but I actually chose it just now" kind of problem. And I don't see why Blue wouldn't just be "Counter/copy chosen player spell" As if there weren't creatures that already do that. Black could be "Revive chosen player creature that died this turn" idk what for green

The way that most playgroups I used these cards in would do it is that, when you played the card, you would write the choice down on a sticky note or something and fold it up, and then open up the note to reveal it to the table if/when you wanted to trigger the effect.

@@pokinfunatcartman it's definitely a very sensible way to go about it but I can't help thinking it is also quite troublesome. This "secret pick with delayed ability" sounds great for arena but it feels like a design that should be used with great moderation in paper magic.

Some ideas! Green - Fog effect, or hexproof from chosen player(, or even indestructible?) (Heroic intervention) Blue - Counter target spell Black - Reanimate from target players graveyard, or destroy target creature or PW of chosen player

A green one couldve been printed in the group hug bloomburrow deck where if the chosen oppent hasnt attacked you this turn cycle you reveal they player you chose, then that player searches for a basic land and puts it onto the battlefield tapped.

The idea is cool, but 'secretly choosing' in the middle of a paper game is incredibly awkward to do. Those cards get avoided mostly just for that.

We are always with our phones in our hands, just wrtite it down on the notes, it takes 2 seconds. Hell you could write it down before your turn if you know your choice.

Green could be a counters trick, i.e. reveal the player you chose, if a creature you control is blocking a creature that player controls, put 2 +1/+1 counters on it

when you guys make cards, especially for Modern Horizons, do you design cards to existing decks, just design cards in a vacuum, or a mix of both?
@sablesalt

I can think of a green one that could work fine, a two costed 1/1 that lets you give +2/+2 ward 2 and trample until end of turn to target creature controlled by or attacking the named player or being targeted or blocked by a card that player controls. I think the design is very interesting as it's based on judges familiar but replacing proactive interaction with greens more resilience based interaction. While it's playing into table politics being able to either help the named player or harm them as a way to encourage players to work with each other. Being able to use greens "anti interaction" interaction tools to reach out to help/hinder other players outside of the colors typical self preserving is a small but good color pie break for letting it interact while not being directly involved but still doing it's unique style of interaction. I'm not a green player (unless playing specifically golgari strategies that don't feel remotely green anyways) but play every other color and specifically dislike green because it's lack of much interaction aside being able to consider player removal as an option much earlier.
