"You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye." -Our Beloved Lord, Jesus Christ (Matthew 7:5) We absolutely should purge the evil among us, starting with ourselves. We should always invite others to repent and follow Jesus Christ, but we should not resort to violence. God bless you and keep you always, brother (or sister). I hope the rest of your evening is beautiful

The Law was given to the Israelites, but that was the Old Covenant, the Law of Moses no longer applies to us, and no human but Jesus ever followed it correctly. Paul seemed to state that very clearly. Not to mention certain commands, like that one, were to teach the Hebrews a certain thing (i.e. God's holiness), at a certain time. Mercy comes through Jesus, and it should come through us as well. He did not condemn us to the darkness, nor did he accept and abandon us to it, but died and rose so that we could come out of it. We will never be able to be so merciful as He, but we are called to try, and violence and hatred against fellow sinners, those who do not know the Lord, is the exact opposite of that.

We must avoid violence if possible yes, but if we are aggressed upon we must fight back and finish the fight. Also Christ Himself flipped tables and beat the money-changers for simply profaning the House of God. Lets not pretend we cannot have righteous anger if God is profaned too much.

You are in fact theologically allowed and even required to flip tables and whip your enemies when the Lord's kingdom is profaned so severely. "Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you."

Absolutely correct. It’s concerning how easily people are willing to act violently-even in cases where it may be justified. The fact of the matter is that the media and stories we consume shape our thinking and only through a careful and philosophically rigorous lens can we overcome these subconsciously ingrained ideas.

It's not really stories that cause that reaction. In fact that's the natural, untaught reaction. The Christian response goes against that visceral reaction which makes it difficult to maintain. That's not to say accept evil, but deal with it Biblically (the whole Bible, not just cherry picked verses).
@alexander3034
@alexander3034 Жыл бұрын
The Old Testament is filled with stories of “decent guys being pushed a bit too far and mowing the bad guys down.” As you said, all of human history is this reaction. It would be unnatural for us not to respond to evil in this way. Why are we not able to be the tool God used to purge evil?

I believe there can be a time when God allows for righteous people to stand up for the Cause of Jesus Christ. I do agree we should do this as peacefully and as law abiding as possible, but even God had the Children of Israel defend themselves. " To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; ... . - Ecclesiastes 3: 1-3. Also: " Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle. For it was of the Lord to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the Lord commanded Moses." - Joshua 11: 18-20 In the Book of Mormon, the Nephites fight against Ex-Nephites (those who rebelled against the Church and their Judicial form of Government - similar to America's system of Government). In The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, in the book of Alma, these verses show the two opposing sides. One for control, and the other for the Cause of Christ: "Now in this case the Lamanites did fight exceedingly; yea, never had the Lamanites been known to fight with such exceedingly great strength and courage, no, not even from the beginning. And they were inspired by the Zoramites and the Amalekites, who were their chief captains and leaders, and by Zerahemnah, who was their chief captain, or their chief leader and commander; yea, they did fight like dragons, and many of the Nephites were slain by their hands, yea, for they did smite in two many of their head-plates, and they did pierce many of their breastplates, and they did smite off many of their arms; and thus the Lamanites did smite in their fierce anger. Nevertheless, the Nephites were inspired by a better cause, for they were not fighting for monarchy nor power but they were fighting for their homes and their liberties, their wives and their children, and their all, yea, for their rites of worship and their church. And they were doing that which they felt was the duty which they owed to their God; for the Lord had said unto them, and also unto their fathers, that: Inasmuch as ye are not guilty of the first offense, neither the second, ye shall not suffer yourselves to be slain by the hands of your enemies. And again, the Lord has said that: Ye shall defend your families even unto bloodshed. Therefore for this cause were the Nephites contending with the Lamanites, to defend themselves, and their families, and their lands, their country, and their rights, and their religion." Alma 43:43-47. Also in this chapter in the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ: " And now it came to pass that when Moroni, who was the chief commander of the armies of the Nephites, had heard of these dissensions, he was angry with Amalickiah. And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it- In memory of our GOD*, our Religion, and Freedom, and our Peace, our Wives, and our Children- and he fastened it upon the end of a pole. And he fastened on his head-plate, and his breastplate, and his shields, and girded on his armor about his loins; and he took the pole, which had on the end thereof his rent coat, (and he called it the Title of Liberty) and he bowed himself to the earth, and he prayed mightily unto his God for the blessings of Liberty to rest upon his brethren, so long as there should a band of Christians remain to possess the land- For thus were all the True Believers of Christ, who belonged to the Church of God, called by those who did not belong to the church. And those who did belong to the church were faithful; yea, all those who were True Believers in Christ took upon them, gladly, the name of Christ, or Christians as they were called, because of their Belief in Christ who should come. And therefore, at this time, Moroni prayed that the cause of the Christians, and the Freedom of the Land might be favored. And it came to pass that when he had poured out his soul to God, he named all the land which was south of the land Desolation, yea, and in fine, all the land, both on the north and on the south- A Chosen Land, and the Land of Liberty. And he said: Surely God shall not suffer that we, who are despised because we take upon us the name of Christ, shall be trodden down and destroyed, until we bring it upon us by our own transgressions. And when Moroni had said these words, he went forth among the people, waving the rent part of his garment in the air, that all might see the writing which he had written upon the rent part, and crying with a loud voice, saying: Behold, whosoever will maintain this Title upon the Land, let them come forth in the strength of the Lord, and enter into a Covenant that they will maintain their Rights, and their Religion, that the Lord GOD may bless them. " - Alma 46: 11-20 * [Capitalized for Emphasis.] "Now it came to pass that while Amalickiah had thus been obtaining power by fraud and deceit, Moroni, on the other hand, had been preparing the minds of the people to be faithful unto the Lord their God. Yea, he had been strengthening the armies of the Nephites, and erecting small forts, or places of resort; throwing up banks of earth round about to enclose his armies, and also building walls of stone to encircle them about, round about their cities and the borders of their lands; yea, all round about the land. And in their weakest fortifications he did place the greater number of men; and thus he did fortify and strengthen the land which was possessed by the Nephites. And thus he was preparing to support their Liberty, their Lands, their Wives, and their Children, and their Peace, and that they might Live unto the Lord their GOD***, and that they might maintain that which was called by their enemies the Cause of Christians. And Moroni was a strong and a mighty man; he was a man of a perfect understanding; yea, a man that did Not delight in bloodshed; a man whose soul did Joy in the Liberty and the Freedom of his Country, and his brethren from bondage and slavery; Yea, a man whose heart did swell with Thanksgiving to his GOD, for the many Privileges and Blessings which he bestowed upon his people; a man who did labor exceedingly for the welfare and safety of his people. Yea, and he was a man who was firm in the Faith of Christ, and he had sworn with an Oath to Defend his people, his Rights, and his Country, and his Religion, even to the loss of his blood. Now the Nephites were taught to defend themselves against their enemies, even to the shedding of blood If it were Necessary; yea, and they were also taught Never to give an offense, yea, and never to raise the sword Except it were against an enemy, Except it were to Preserve their Lives. And this was their faith, that by so doing God would prosper them in the land, or in other words, if they were faithful in keeping the commandments of God that he would prosper them in the land; yea, warn them to flee, or to prepare for war, according to their danger; And also, that God would make it Known unto them Whither they should go to Defend themselves against their enemies, and by so doing, the LORD would deliver them; and this was the Faith of Moroni, and his heart did glory in it; not in the shedding of blood But in Doing Good, in Preserving his people, yea, in Keeping the Commandments of GOD, yea, and Resisting Iniquity. ... ... Now behold, Helaman and his brethren were No Less Serviceable unto the people than was Moroni; for they did Preach the Word of GOD, and they did Baptize unto Repentance All men whosoever would hearken unto their words. And thus they went forth, and the people did Humble themselves because of their words, insomuch that they were Highly Favored of the LORD, and thus they were Free from wars and contentions among themselves, yea, even for the space of four years. But, as I have said, in the latter end of the nineteenth year, yea, Notwithstanding their Peace amongst themselves, they were Compelled Reluctantly to contend with their brethren, the Lamanites. Yea, and in fine, their wars never did cease for the space of many years with the Lamanites, Notwithstanding their Much Reluctance. Now, they were Sorry to take up arms against the Lamanites, because they did Not delight in the shedding of blood; yea, and this was not all-they were Sorry to be the means of sending so many of their brethren out of this world into an eternal world, Unprepared to meet their God. Nevertheless, they could Not Suffer to lay down their lives, that their wives and their children should be Massacred by the Barbarous Cruelty of Those Who were Once their Brethren, yea, and had dissented from their church, and had left them and had gone to destroy them by joining the Lamanites. Yea, they could Not bear that their brethren should rejoice over the blood of the Nephites, So long as there were Any who should Keep the Commandments of GOD, for the Promise of the Lord was, If they should Keep His Commandments they should Prosper in the Land. " - Alma 48:7-16 & 18-25. *** [Capitalized for Emphasis.]

There is undeniably a tonal difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament, in essence God the Father striking a different tone than God the Son. Most of the quotes you selected are really just describing events and that certain people within would pray to God or believe he approves of their vengeance, when Christ specifically never encourages this.

It's better to let the Lord judge, what if you judge or damage an innocent or just person, our judgement as people will be flawed or even biased, so it's better to let the Lord decide ... because we can not let fanatism becomes violence ... there's always a way to solve porblems without resorting to violence ... how do you know who is good or innocent and who is wicked? by appearances? by what you see and perceive externally or by fair judgement? We cannot let fanatism become violence or justified way to solve something ... shouldn't nor musn't at least ...
